Notes: A unified yield criterion is proposed in this paper, which is valid for the metallicsandwich sections with various core strength and geometrical dimensions and can reduce to theclassical yield criteria for solid monolithic section and sandwich section with weak core, respectively. Then, the unified yield criterion is used to derive the analytical solution for the largedeflection of fully clamped metallic sandwich beam subject to a transversely concentrated load, inwhich the interaction of bending and stretching is considered. Comparisons of the present solutionswith experimental results are carried out and good agreements are found. It is seen that the axialstretching induced by large deflection has a significant effect on the deflection of sandwichstructure in the post-yield regime, and the load carrying capacity of metallic foam core sandwichbeam may be underestimated as the core strength is neglected in analysis

Notes: Interference-fit fasteners are used in large numbers throughout aircraft structures.Conventional installation methods are driving fasteners into aperture using pneumatic or hydraulictooling, installation damage always occurs using these methods. This paper introduces a newmethod of driving interference-fit fastener using stress wave, reports on a comparison of drivingquality between stress wave driving and hydraulic force driving. The experiments completed byauthors indicate that stress-wave method can drive the fasteners with larger interference whichconventional installation method can not implement; stress wave driving method provides highinstallation quality and repeatable results compared with the conventional driving method; andstress wave driving method is convenient to be used. The experiments prove that the protuberantmaterial produced by stress wave method is less than that of conventional installation methods, thisis advantaged to improve the fatigue strength of joint

Notes: Homogenization is an important analysis approach of composite materials with structural hierarchy and can give the prediction of macroscopic properties of the composites. There are many homogenization theories and methods. The present paper discusses applications of some homogenization approaches including both direct and mathematical homogenizations for the analysis of anisotropic composites with periodic microstructures. The macroscopic properties of thecomposite are predicted by the direct homogenization and the mathematical homogenisation method. The periodic boundary conditions of a representative volume element are implemented by a transformation method of the degrees of freedom. The numerical results are demonstrated for two model composites. The study shows that these two homogenization methods gave the same resultsfor the macroscopic elastic stiffness of the composites although they are of different mathematical forms and different operation procedures

Notes: Summary For a two-dimensional piezoelectric plate, the thermoelectroelastic Green's functions for bimaterials subjected to a temperature discontinuity are presented by way of Stroh formalism. The study shows that the thermoelectroelastic Green's functions for bimaterials are composed of a particular solution and a corrective solution. All the solutions have their singularities, located at the point applied by the dislocation, as well as some image singularities, located at both the lower and the upper half-plane. Using the proposed thermoelectroelastic Green's functions, the problem of a crack of arbitrary orientation near a bimaterial interface between dissimilar thermopiezoelectric material is analysed, and a system of singular integral equations for the unknown temperature discontinuity, defined on the crack faces, is obtained. The stress and electric displacement (SED) intensity factors and strain energy density factor can be, then, evaluated by a numerical solution at the singular integral equations. As a consequence, the direction of crack growth can be estimated by way of strain energy density theory. Numerical results for the fracture angle are obtained to illustrate the application of the proposed formulation.

Notes: Abstract The problem of crack deflection in bimaterial systems is considered in this paper. The material combinations may be of piezoelectric-piezoelectric, or one is piezoelectric and the other is not. Based on the Stroh formulation for anisotropic material, Green's functions for various bimaterial combinations are presented within the framework of two-dimensional electroelasticity, allowing the crack problem to be expressed in terms of coupled singular integral equations. A crack impinging on an interface joining two dissimilar materials may arrest or may advance be either penetrating the interface or deflecting into the interface. The competition between deflection and penetration is investigated using the maximum energy release rate criterion. Numerical results are presented to study the role of remote electroelastic loads on the path selection of crack extension. Key words:  Crack, piezoelectric material, interface, Green's function, singular integral equation.

Notes: Abstract Dilute, Self-Consistent (SC), Mori-Tanaka (MT) and differential micromechanics methods are developed for microcrack- weakened thermopiezoelectric solids. These methods are capable of determination of effective properties such as the conductivity, electroelastic moduli, thermal expansion and pyroelectric coefficients. The above material constants affected by the microcracks are derived by way of Stroh's formulation and some recently developed explicit solutions of a crack in an infinite piezoelectric solid subjected to remote thermal, electrical and elastic loads. In common with the corresponding uncoupled thermal, electric and elastical behavior, the dilute and Mori-Tanaka techniques give explicit estimates of the effective thermoelectroelastic moduli. The SC and differential schemes, however, give only implicit estimates, with nonlinear algebraic matrix equations, of the effective thermoelectroelastic moduli. Numerical results are given for a particular cracked material to examine the behavior of each of the four micromechanics models.

Notes: The paper presents a hybrid Trefftz (HT) element approach for the numerical solution of transient plate bending problems. In the proposed method, the dynamic plate equation is first discretized with respect to time and then the resulting set of elliptic equations is solved by the corresponding time independent hybrid Trefftz element approach. Two examples are considered to assess the effectiveness of the numerical method.
