    Notes: A reaction path for the Li4+H2 interaction has been determined allowing for the relaxation and the reconstruction of the system. For various steps along the reaction path characterized by the given values of one or two geometrical parameters the full geometry optimization of the remaining variables has been carried out in the framework of the Hartree–Fock (HF) procedure. The configuration interaction (CI) energies for the optimal HF geometries in each step have been calculated using multireference diexcited (MRD-CI) procedure. The calculated dissociation energy for the molecular hydrogen is reduced from 103.6 to 19.6 kcal/mol in the presence of Li tetrameter. During the first stage of the reaction path referred as "dissociative chemisorption'' the geometry of the Li tetrameter does not change substantially. After dissociation of H2 the full reconstruction of the tetrameter takes place leading to a local minimum which is separated from the lowest minimum by a moderate barrier along the chosen reaction path. The stable compound has the form of deformed rhombus with two hydrogen atoms bridging two neighboring rhombus sides. The preliminary calculations using complete active space self-consistent field procedure followed by direct CI carried out for the Li6+H2 interaction in the C2v symmetry yield fairly stable three dimensional LI6H2 compound, which can be formed after passing an energy barrier of comparable size at the present level of calculation as that found for the Li4+H2 reaction.

    Notes: The objective of this work was to determine viability and ATP content of conidia of Aspergillus parasiticus NRRL 2999 following exposure to sorbic acid solutions. The minimum inhibitory concentration of sorbic acid to A. parasiticus conidia was found to be between 0.05 and 0.10% (w/v). The viability of conidia remained constant during the first 12 hr of exposure to 0.25% sorbic acid. From 12–20 hr of exposure, a slow decline in viability became evident with a rapid decline occurring after 20 hr of exposure. When the concentration of sorbic acid was increased from 0.25 to OS%, viability of the conidia was greatly reduced and the time required for viability to decrease dropped from 20 hr to 4 hr. When ATP levels of conidia were studied, there was a rapid decline in ATP during the fist 24 hr of exposure to 0.22% (0.02M) sorbic acid, followed by a more gradual decline from 24–36 hr. At a sorbic acid concentration of 0.34% (O.O3M), the same pattern of decreasing ATP was seen, but the decline was much more rapid and the ATP concentration reached a much lower level. The data showed that the decrease in ATP level of the conidia could be related to decreased viability of the conidia after exposure to sorbic acid. This suggests that one possible mechanism of action of sorbic acid in fungal inhibition may involve depletion of ATP levels of conidia.

    Notes: Abstract The high-temperature oxidation behavior of a ferritic alloy (SUS 430) in a SOFC environment, corresponding to the anode (H2/H2O gas mixture) and cathode (air) operating conditions, was determined with regard to application of the alloy as a metallic separator material in SOFC. The oxidation kinetics of Fe-16Cr alloy (SUS 430), was studied by thermogravimetry in H2/H2O gas mixtures with pH/pHO=94/6 and 97/3 and in air, in the temperature range 1023-1223 K, for 3.6 up to 1080 ks. It was found that the protective oxide scale, composed mainly of Cr2O3 with uniform thickness and excellent adhesion to the metal substrate, grows in accordance with the parabolic rate law. The dependence of the parabolic rate constant, kp, of the scale on temperature obeys the Arrhenius equation: kp=6.8×10-4 exp (-202.3 kJ mol-1R-1T-1) for H2/H2O gas mixtures with pH/pHO=94/6. The determined kp was independent of the oxygen partial pressure in the range from 5.2×10-22 to 0.21 atm at 1073 K, which means that the rates of growth of the scale on Fe-16Cr alloy in the above-mentioned atmospheres are comparable. The oxidation test results on Fe-16Cr alloy in H2/H2O gas mixtures and air demonstrate the applicability of SUS 430 alloys as a separator for SOFC.

    Notes: Abstract Precise values of parabolic rate constants of cobalt oxidation have been determined over a wide range of temperature (950–1300°C) and oxygen pressure (6.58× 10−4−0.658 atm). The dependence of the calculated values of parabolic rate constants k″p on oxygen pressure and temperature can be described by the following empirical equation: $$k''_p = const. \cdot {\text{p}}_{O_2 }^{{\text{1/n}}} \cdot exp ( - {\text{E}}_{\text{k}} /RT)$$ The exponent 1/n decreases with an increase in temperature from 1/3.40 at 950°C to 1/3.96 at 1300°C, whereas the activation energy Ek decreases with an increase in the oxygen pressure from 41.7 to 38.1 kcal/mole.

    Notes: Abstract A new fast method is proposed for the determination of parabolic rate constants of metal oxidation as a function of pressure and temperature. The method consists of determining rate constants by oxidation of a single metal sample in a continuous manner, periodically changing the oxidant pressure or temperature. This method eliminates a number of errors inherent in the classical method which involves the use of a new metal specimen in each experiment and it further shortens the time of evaluating the functions k p '' = f (p, T). The method is particularly suitable for the determination of rate constants of slow processes. To verify the proposed method measurements of the kinetics of oxidation of cobalt and nickel at different oxygen pressures over the temperature range 1000–1300° C were carried out.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation is reported on the sulfidation properties of an Fe-23.4Cr-18.6Al(at.%) alloy at 1073 and 1173 K in H2S-H2 atmospheres, 104 〉 PS 2 ≥ 105Pa. The sulfidation kinetics exhibited an early transient period before onset of parabolic kinetics. Values of the parabolic sulfidation rate constants increased by as much as 105 from their smallest values at low sulfur pressures, PS 2 ≦ 10−4 Pa, to maximum values at sulfur pressures PS 2 ∼ 102 Pa. Multilayered scales were formed, the number and types of layers dependent on sulfur pressure. A fully developed scale at sulfur pressures PS 2 〉 10−3 Pa.
