Notes: The pair correlation function C(r,t) for random sequential adsorption of particles with nearest-neighbor exclusion on a one-dimensional lattice evolves in time as C(r,t) = −1/2e−2(1−e−t)∑∞n=0{ [−2(1−e−t)]2n+r+1/(2n+r+1)!}. The distribution of the number of adsorbed particles on a lattice with N sites is shown to have a variance N(1 − e−t)e−4(1−e−t) for large N.

Notes: Supersaturated solutions of substitutional, electrically active Sb in 〈100〉 silicon single crystals have been obtained by ion implantation, followed by short-duration incoherent-light annealing. Substitutional and nonsubstitutional fractions have been studied as functions of implanted dose and anneal temperature by Rutherford backscattering and channeling techniques, transmission-electron microscopy, Hall-effect and resistivity measurements (combined with layer removal), and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The maximum electrically active concentration, which can be incorporated on undisturbed substitutional sites, is found to be 4.5×1020 Sb/cm3 for 700 °C annealing. Upon further annealing, the supersaturated solution is reduced and approaches the Trumbore solubility value at temperatures of about 1100 °C. The Sb going out of solution is shown for the first time to be created in two different surroundings: Sb is predominantly found in Sb-vacancy complexes for low doses and low annealing temperatures and in Sb precipitates for high doses and/or high annealing temperatures. Complete agreement is found between substitutional fractions derived from Mössbauer spectroscopy and electrically active fractions from Hall-effect measurements, whereas the substitutional fractions from channeling measurements are significantly higher. The experiments are not conclusive as to whether this difference is due to the fraction of Sb in Sb-vacancy complexes or in coherent Sb precipitates.

Notes: The restriction enzymes MspI and Bg/II identify two different two-allele restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) in the human IL-6 genes of healthy Danes. Co-dominant segregation was demonstrated for both marker-systems and the test for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium showed no significant deviation from expectations. There is a strong correlation between the two marker systems. The two IL-6 RFLP's were studied in Danish patients with rheumatoid arthritis, pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. The frequencies of the MspI and Bg/II marker phenotypes did not differ between healthy controls and the three disease groups. No extra or missing DNA fragments were observed in the disease groups when compared with controls.

Notes: Summary Serum levels of T4, T3 rT3 and resin T3 uptake were followed for 5 days in 40 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) allocated to early treatment either with alprenolol or placebo. There was a significant fall in T3 (P〈0.05) and an increase in rT3 (P〈0.05) without any significant difference between the alprenolol — (n=19) and placebo — (n=21) treated groups. The risk of missing a further 20% change in se-T3 and se-rT3 after alprenolol compared to placebo treatment (β) was 〈0.10 and 〈0.50, respectively. In patients with a severe clinical course, the fall in T3 and increase in rT3 was significantly greater than in patients without complications. No change in T4 was observed either with respect to the clinical course nor following alprenolol. The data suggest that alprenolol can be given in the acute phase of myocardial infarction without causing any additional disturbance in the serum levels of T3 and T4.

Notes: Summary The effect of long-term treatment with alprenolol on left ventricular function was investigated in a controlled double-blind study of 15 patients with ischaemic heart disease (alprenolol 6, placebo 9), by measurement of systolic time intervals (STI). Significant prolongation of QS2I was observed in patients treated with alprenolol (p〈0.05), while changes in PEPI, LVETI and PEP/LVET were all insignificant. The heart rate x systolic blood pressure product (RPP) was significantly reduced in the alprenolol group (p〈0.05). The data suggest that long-term treatment with alprenolol did not impair left ventricular function as evaluated by STI, and that myocardial oxygen demand, assessed by RPP, was reduced during the treatment.

Notes: Summary In 40 patients with ischaemic heart disease the serum levels of magnesium, parathyroid hormone (PTH), phosphate, calcium, and ionized calcium remained unchanged and within normal limits following treatment for 12 months with alprenolol (n=20) or placebo (n=20). No changes occurred during a 2 week withdrawal period. The clinical implication is that the non-cardioselective betablocker alprenolol can be given to patients with ischaemic heart disease without the risk of inducing potentially cardiotoxic disturbances in serum magnesium and serum calcium levels. Whether this applies to cardioselective beta-blockers remains to be established.

Notes: Abstract The massive Fe-Zn-Pb sulphide sheets constituting the Angel Zone ore body of the Black Angel Mine, show evidence of three phases of deformation at greenschist facies metamorphic grade. During an early phase an originally layered sulphide ore type was isoclinally folded. Subsequent thrusting parallel to the ore body transformed the layered ore into massive and porphyroclastic ore tectonites. Late, open folds refolded the earlier structures and caused localized differential mobilization of the sulphides. The microstructures of the layered ore tectonite indicate a period with static grain growth, interpreted as the result of prograde metamorphism, followed by a dynamic recrystallization under low stress and at low strain rates, which is correlated with the early isoclinal folding. The microstructures of the massive and the porphyroclastic ore tectonites indicate syntectonic recrystallization under high stress and at high strain rates, corresponding to the thrusting of the ore bodies. The microstructures of the mobilized sulphides show evidence of repeated plastic/cataclastic deformation and recrystallization, corresponding to highly variable strain and strain rate conditions during the mobilization. Post-deformational annealing took place at elevated temperature and was largely controlled by inhibition-dependent grain growth and to a minor extent by orientation-dependent grain growth.

Notes: Abstract DP gene typing using in vitro DNA amplification combined with sequence-specific oligonucleotide probes (SSOP) has recently been reported. The amplification step may be specific for theHLA-DPB locus, or it may be specific for one or a group ofHLA-DPB alleles, thus increasing the discriminatory power of the system. We report the combined use of group-specific DNA in vitro amplification followed by SSOP in typing forDPB1*02 andDPB1*04 variants. The method was used to type for these variants in 96 randomly selected, healthy Danes, in 37 patients with pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (PJRA); and in 38 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Increased frequencies of the cellularly defined HLA-DPw2 in PJRA and of HLA-DPw4 in MS have previously been reported. In the patient groups, the frequencies of theDPB1*02 andDPB1*04 variants did not differ significantly from those expected based on the cellularly defined HLA-DP types of the patients and the frequencies of theDPB1*02 andDPB1*04 variants among healthy Danes.
