Notizen: We have studied the switching behavior of single-domain cobalt nanostructures using a combination of magnetometry and magnetic force microscopy. The elongated nanostructures are 80×140 nm wide, and range in thickness from 14 to 30 nm. Structures thinner than 20 nm form a single-domain binary system featuring two preferred orientations of the magnetization. An additional double-domain configuration becomes increasingly favorable as the thickness approaches 30 nm. The onset of this double-domain state agrees with previously reported numerical calculations. We also present a quantitative study of interparticle coupling in tightly packed arrays. The local dipolar field increases the squareness of the hysteresis loop as the interparticle separation decreases below 400 nm. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report the fabrication and characterization of paddle oscillators featuring nanometer-scale supporting rods. The devices show two resonances in the 1–10 MHz range, which we attribute to the translational and torsional modes of motion. While the frequency response of the translational motion shows evidence of nonlinear behavior, the torsional response remains symmetric throughout the range of excitation. We present a model for the electrostatic excitation of the two modes. Torsional motion is induced via asymmetries of the system, and amplified by a modulation of the effective torsional constant. The model of the translational motion predicts a nonlinear behavior for displacements as small as 15 nm. Analysis of both modes of motion consistently suggests structures softer than expected from bulk silicon. Quality factors approaching 103 are measured. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have examined the vibrational noise originating from 1.3 K pumped helium chambers (1 K pots) that are continuously filled from the 4.2 K bath through an impedance. The noise can be largely eliminated by either heating the pot or by heating the impedance directly. Noise in 1 K pots has detrimental consequences for the operation of audio frequency torsional oscillators and for high precision thermometry. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Magnetotransport measurements have been performed in thin cobalt disilicide films epitaxially grown on Si(111) wafers. Films of thickness between 4.0 and 20.0 nm were studied in order to ascertain the important electron scattering rates. A temperature independent contribution to the phase breaking scattering rate was determined and attributed to spin–spin scattering of the conduction electrons which increases as the film thickness is decreased. The origin of this scattering and its importance to the low-temperature electron transport are discussed.

Notizen: The construction and performance of a single stage nuclear demagnetization apparatus utilizing 0.267 mole of praseodymium nickel material is described. An optimization procedure to minimize entropy production during the demagnetization of the hyperfine enhanced material has been developed which enabled the cryostat to cool a liquid-3He sample to a temperature of 350 μK. The effects of measured heat leaks and inferred eddy-current heating are accounted for satisfactorily in a model of this procedure.

Notizen: We describe a torque magnetometer for use at low temperatures based on a high-Q silicon torsional oscillator. The oscillator is fabricated using standard lithographic techniques from a single-crystal silicon wafer. The sample stage of the oscillator has an area of 0.57 cm2 and is suitable for deposition of thin magnetic film samples. Oscillator motion is detected through a capacitance measurement. The small torsion constant of the oscillator combined with a Q value 〉106 allow detection of magnetic moments as small as 10−13 A m2. Magnetometer sensitivity is measured using small superconducting open cylinders machined from aluminum. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Micromechanical oscillators in the rf range were fabricated in the form of silicon discs supported by a SiO2 pillar at the disk center. A low-power laser beam, (Plaser∼100 μW), focused at the periphery of the disk, causes a significant change of the effective spring constant producing a frequency shift, Δf(Δf/f∼10−4). The high quality factor, Q, of the disk oscillator (Q∼104) allows us to realize parametric amplification of the disk's vibrations through a double frequency modulation of the laser power. An amplitude gain of up to 30 was demonstrated, with further increase limited by nonlinear behavior and self-generation. Phase dependence, inherent in degenerate parametric amplification, was also observed. Using this technique, the sensitivity of detection of a small force is greatly enhanced. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Self-generated vibration of a disk-shaped, single-crystal silicon micromechanical oscillator was observed when the power of a continuous wave laser, focused on the periphery of the disk exceeded a threshold of a few hundred μW. With the laser power set to just below the self-generation threshold, the quality factor for driven oscillations increases by an order of magnitude from Q=10 000 to Qenh=110 000. Laser heating-induced thermal stress modulates the effective spring constant via the motion of the disk within the interference pattern of incident and reflected laser beams and provides a mechanism for parametric amplification and self-excitation. Light sources of different wavelengths facilitate both amplification and damping. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: An experimental method, employing a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) as an actuator and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) as a motion detector, was developed to study microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and has been applied to study microfabricated cantilever beams. Vibrations actuated by an ac voltage applied to the piezodrive are transferred to the sample by the STM tip, which also provides a constraint at the drive location, altering the fundamental mode of the oscillation. A continuous change in the resonant frequency of the cantilever is achieved by varying the position of the STM tip. In contrast to the few percent tunability previously demonstrated for MEMS oscillators, we have varied the cantilever frequency over a 300% range. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We present data on nanofabricated suspended silicon wires driven at resonance. The wires are electrostatically driven and detected optically. We have observed wires with widths as small as 45 nm and resonant frequencies as high as 380 MHz. We see a strong dependence of the resonant quality factor on the surface to volume ratio. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
