Beschreibung:
Morphology and dynamics were studied for two low intensity monochromatic mid latitude auroral arcs of 6300A (OI) from Whiteface Mt. (latitude: 44°23′N.; longitude 73°51′W.), New York on the nights of October 12/13, 1968 and February 10/11, 1969, when there was geomagnetic and visible auroral activity. The observed arcs differ in many respects from the arcs observed during the IGY. However, the geographical position and speed of the arcs are generally consistent with those of the IGY. The average half-intensity width was approximately 150 km. The variation of the peak intensity appeared to follow the variation of the horizontal component of the geomagnetic field as in the case of the visible aurora. © 1970, Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences.
