Notes: Abstract The ratio between the uptake of85Sr and47Ca was measured in the tibiae and femora of rats 24 h after injection of the tracers. There was a significant difference between shafts and ends but not between the different bones; in healed tibial fractures, 7 weeks old, the ratio was identical to that of normal tibial shafts. The findings were interpreted to be related to qualitative rather than quantitative differences in mineralization between cortical and trabecular bone.

Notes: Abstract Actinomycin-D, when given to rats, decreased the plasma calcium level, increased the retention of85Sr in the whole body and plasma but not in bone. The findings suggest that Actinomycin-D interferes with bone resorption but not with the mineralization process.

Notes: Summary This is a follow-up of a previous study on the predictive power of bone mineral measurements; two more observation years have been added. A group of women (n=1076) had their forearm bone mineral content (BMC) measured from 1970–1976. All fractures that occurred in 1975–1987 (13 years) were recorded. Four hundred sixty-nine fragility fractures occurred during the collection period. Again, it was found that BMC at the distal end of the forearm is a good predictor of future fracture before the age of 70. The measurement at the proximal site (forearm shafts), however, in contrast to our previous study, has a capacity of predicting fracture also in the age group 70–80. BMC measurements were good predictors of vertebral crush fractures and trochanteric hip fracture but lesser predictors of fractures of the distal end of the forearm. In age groups 40–70, BMC was a stronger predictor of fracture than age, and the risk associated with a 1 SD decrease of BMC 6 was 3.2 for a hip fracture as compared with those without any fragility fracture, even when adjusted for age. In addition to BMC, low body weight was a fracture predictor. Body weight 5 kg below age-adjusted mean increased the risk of a trochanteric hip fracture by 30%. The data are used in hypothetical calculations of the effects of screening.

Notes: Abstract The bone mineral mass in the distal end of the femur was evaluated in 121 men, half of which were alcoholics. It was demonstrated that in alcoholics the bone mass was significantly decreased but only in combination with previous gastrectomy.

Notes: Abstract The bone mineral content was measured by gamma absorptiometry in patients who had sustained fractures of the upper limb. Measurements were taken on the shafts of the forearm and in the trabecular bone immediately proximal to the wrist. Fractures of the surgical neck of the humerus and fractures of the shaft of the humerus did not significantly influence the bone mineral content of the ipsilateral forearm. Fracture of the radius and the ulna, however, caused a 15% loss of the bone mineral content in the trabecular bone proximal to the wrist, whereas the mineral content on the shafts of the fractured forearms increased or decreased depending on the fracture site. The findings suggest that measurements of bone mineral content of the forearm are not necessarily invalidated if there has been a fracture of the same limb. Only if the forearm itself is fractured should measurements on this site be avoided.

Notes: Summary In 31 epileptics, most of whom had been on anticonvulsive drugs for decades, the amount of osteoid—active and inactive—and the osteoclast activity were measured in iliac crest biopsies and compared with the same variables from a control group. Although falling within normal limits, the amount of osteoid, in particular the inactive osteoid, was significantly increased in the epileptics. The osteoclast activity was also significantly increased in the epileptics.

Notes: Summary The bone mineral content in the forearms was measured in 71 epileptics, admitted to an institution for epileptics. The mineral content was decreased in epileptics as compared with agematched normal controls. The decrease was in the order of 10–15% except in the distal end of the forearm in women. Also, the strength of the hand and forearm was decreased by 1/3 and since there is a known relationship between strength and bone mineral content, the loss of bone mineral may be secondary to the loss of strength. Therefore, inactivity could be an important contributory factor to the bone mineral loss in these epileptics.

Notes: Summary The bone mineral content of the forearms was measured in 395 women, aged 49, and correlated with menarche, menopause, parity, lactation, contraceptives, diet, smoking, and physical activity. Late menarche and early menopause were associated with a lower than average bone mineral content whereas the life-style parameters were not.

Notes: Abstract In 37 women suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, the bone mass was evaluated by measurements of cortical thickness in the hand, forearm and femur, densitometry of the distal femur, and ranking of the degree of osteoporosis in the spine. There was evidence that rheumatoid arthritis produces general osteoporosis, particularly in conjunction with cortico-steroid therapy.
