Description: We present to the international scientific community three important works by Father Maccioni adapted into English with several parts literally translated. The investigation into the existence of an electromagnetic (EM) seismic precursor was carried on in Italy in the beginning of the twentieth century and exploited the capabilities of a specifically designed coherer. For several reasons, both the work and the author are widely unknown even in Italy. We think this is likely to be the very first historical case of a study of a seismic precursor of the EM type.

Description: We present the results of multidisciplinary investigations of two significant sites, located in the Acque Albule Basin (AAB), 25 km Northeast of Rome (Italy). This basin has been interpreted as a transtensional structure, lying in the western margin of the Apennine range and affecting the Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary and volcanic sequences. During late Pleistocene times, AAB has been filled in with thermogenic travertine of variable thickness. Since historical time, lithoid travertine has been quarried, becoming the main building material during the Roman period (Lapis Tiburtinus). At present, the mining activity still represents the main economic resource of the region together with thermal baths. After the end of the II World War this area has experienced a strong urbanization and marshy lands were transformed into densely populated areas affected by subsidence and sinkhole phenomena. In order to characterize these environmental hazards from the geophysical and geotechnical point of view, we chose two test sites close to relevant anthropic infrastructures. Site A, located at the southern side of the Guidonia military airport and beside an important road; site B, a few kilometers South-East of site A, lies next to the Regina and Colonnelle Lakes and close to the Roma- Pescara railway. The former feature is a large sinkhole depression, hundreds of meters in width, characterized by ongoing subsidence, whereas the latter consists of two sinkholes actually acting as springs. Both sites lie in proximity of inferred faults, which would affect the AAB in the N-S and NE-SW– directions respectively. The aim of this study is to compare the two cases by collecting geological, geomorphological and geophysical parameters and thus testing the variable controlling their formation and development. We also extended the geophysical campaign in the surrounding area using a multidisciplinary approach to image both surface and subsurface features. We carried out stratigraphic and geomorphological survey, 2 and 3D Geoelectrical Tomography (ERT), differential GPS altimetry, gravity, magnetic, seismic, and soil gas measurements. Moreover, two drillings have been bored inside and outside the depression area of the Site A, reaching depths of 60 and 20 meter, respectively. Geotechnical parameters of the recovered stratigraphy were also measured by laboratory tests. In general, the approach we propose could provide key elements to recognize similar situations in sinkhole prone areas. Moreover, comparative analysis together with the monitoring of the A site can represent useful tools to understand the genesis and dynamics of phenomena and hopefully to forecast their evolution, particularly in the parts of the basin where active movements caused fractures and damages to buildings and infrastructures.

Description: We present the results of a combined analysis of remote sensing and geophysical ‐ geotechnical data carried out in the Acque Albule Basin, a sinkhole prone area located close to the city of Roma, where a wide travertine wedge is present. We carried out geophysical measurements and borehole drillings over two test areas to image the subsoil where paroxysmal sur fi cial dynamics occur. One site is marked by subsidence occurring at least since the early 2000s, whereas the other site hosts the “ La Regina ” and “ Colonnelle ” sinkhole lakes, which discharge sulfur ‐ carbonated waters. The stability of these two sites threatens highway, railway, and airport facilities, and this study helps to assess the geological hazard. For example, InSAR and LiDAR data helped de fi ne wide scale subsidence over the last 20 years and previously undetected small ‐ scale morphologies. Geophysical measurements of the latter revealed shallow and deep dissolution affecting the travertine and driving sur fi cial paroxysmal events. Both study sites were found to lie inside a large depression located at the junction between Jurassic carbonate and Plio ‐ Pleistocene units in association with paleo karst morphologies in the travertine deposits and affected by the present ‐ past spillage of sulfurous waters. Given these elements, multidisciplinary geophysical observations are crucial for assessing and mitigating the geological risk and guiding land use planning and management.

Description: Those scientific and industrial equipment that require a very low temperature cooling system to operate often require continuous maintenance and constant control of the cryogenic liquid level. For this reason, some plants are equipped with remote surveillance systems based on “ad hoc” developed technologies for very low temperatures. We present a patented technical solution to be able to use, in cryogenic conditions, a common ultrasound sensor that costs 4 euros. This cap for dewar tanks, due to its particular shape, allows to obtain this result. Consequently, it also offers the possibility of being able to use other lowcost technologies, such as the microcontrollers of the Arduino series. This allows an unlimited range of developments ranging from remote monitoring to the total automation of the ordinary maintenance of the cooling system. With this idea an “active cap” for Dewar was created at very low cost. It monitors the level of liquid nitrogen and provides online measurements updated in real time, the forecast of intervention for topping up and any alarm messages. A simple upgrade can allow automatic refilling of the liquid in the dewar. This solution, for inexpensiveness, can also represent an alternative to closedcircuit cooling and recycling systems.

Description: This is a commented translation of the rare document cited by more than a century of bibliography as "Milne, 1890". The text was studied to verify the veracity of some recent claims that this report (presently difficult to find) had dealt with electromagnetic precursors for the first time. An attempt was made to investigate each episode and character, identifying the cryptic (and sometimes non-existent) bibliographic references, tracing almost all the texts, often expanding and commenting on the relative citations. My opinion is that no one, at the time of Milne, had consciously, but maybe not even accidentally, observed a precursor of electromagnetic origin. The phenomena described are studied from either a purely electrical or magnetic point of view. Electrical signals concern too high voltages and currents. Magnetic phenomena, already at the time, were contested as products of inertial effects, but in any case it is difficult to think that the magnetic field component of an EM signal can permanently deflect the needle of a compass. However this same research has brought to light some other potentially interesting cases that should be investigated further. One of them, could actually be the first documentable case of the observation of an electromagnetic seismic precursor.

ABSTRACT: Following the agreement between INGV and SSI (IPODATA project), seismic equipment was installed in artificial cavities, starting from 2007. Later, in some sites, new geophysical instrumentation was installed in addition, as follows: - in the bunker inside Monte Soratte, near S. Oreste (RM), a monitoring system for very low frequency electromagnetic waves (VLF) has been recently installed together with a radon meter, both for the study of potential seismic precursors; - since 2015, according to a collaboration between INGV, UnivAQ and INFN, in a horizontal borehole drilled (in the ’80s) next to the deep underground laboratories of Gran Sasso (LNGS), pressure and conductivity of groundwater have been recorded by sensors in continuous high sampling (20 sps); during the Amatrice seismic sequence (08/24/2016, Mw=6.0) the pressure data showed clear anomalies about 5 days before the earthquake; - finally, upgrades were carried out in other IPODATA sites (PTRJ, CESX etc.)
