    Notes: Abstract Long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) are the major energy substrate for heart and their oxidation is important for achieving maximal cardiac work. However, the mechanism of uptake of LCFA by myocardium has not been clarified. We previously reported that bovine myocardial LCFA transporter has a sequence homology to human CD36. Clinically, total defect of myocardial uptake of radiolabeled long-chain fatty acid analog [123I-BMIPP: Iodine-123 15-(p-iodophenyl)-(R,S)-methylpentadecanoic acid] has been reported in some restricted cases, but the etiology has not been clarified. In the present study, we analyzed CD36 expression and CD36 gene in subjects who showed total lack of myocardial 123I-BMIPP accumulation, and, vice versa, evaluated myocardial 123I-BMIPP uptake in subjects with CD36 deficiency. Four unrelated subjects were evaluated; Two were found to have negative myocardial LCFA accumulation by 123I-BMIPP scintigraphy, after which the expression of CD36 on their platelets and monocytes was analyzed. Remaining two subjects were identified as CD36 deficiency by screening, then 123I-BMIPP scintigraphy was performed. Expression of CD36 on platelets and monocytes was measured by flow cytometric analysis. The molecular defects responsible for CD36 deficiency was detected by allele-specific restriction enzyme analysis. CD36 expression was totally deficient in all 4 subjects on both platelets and monocytes. Two subjects were homozygous for a 478C→T mutation. One was heterozygous for the dinucleotide deletion of exon V and single nucleotide insertion of exon X, and remaining one was considered to be heterozygous for the dinucleotide deletion of exon V and an unknown gene abnormality. All cases demonstrated a completely negative accumulation of myocardial LCFA despite of normal myocardial perfusion, which was evaluated by thallium scintigraphy. In addition, all cases demonstrated apparently normal hepatic LCFA accumulation Thus, these findings suggested that CD36 acts as a major myocardial specific LCFA transporter in humans.

    Notes: Infrared spectra of CO2 sorbed in rubbery and glassy polymers were measured to examine the relationships between the spectroscopic data and physical properties of the polymeric membranes. The “V-shape” tendency in the plot of W1 [i.e., half-width of CO2 peak sorbed in the membranes] vs glass-transition temperature (Tg) is observed, and has exactly the same tendency that is widely known from the plot of log D (diffusion coefficient) vs Tg. It is suggested that the membranes having a wider W1 give a faster diffusion coefficient, since W1 is inversely related to the moment of inertia of CO2 in the membranes. Two distinct peaks of CO2 were not observed in the infrared spectra of CO2 sorbed in the glassy polymers. This suggests that the states of CO2 in the Henry mode and Langmuir mode in the glassy polymers are similar in the spectroscopic measurements. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PMSP) has the potential to be an important membrane gas separation material due to the fact that it has the highest gas permeability of all polymeric membranes. One problem with PMSP is a decrease in the gas permeability with age. In order to understand the aging processes, we studied the change in free volume and the molecular motions of the PMSP and its membranes modified with 1-phenyl-1-propyne (PP) structures; that is, a copolymer and a blend of PMSP and PPP. During aging, the unrelaxed volume of the PMSP membrane was relaxed, and the molecular motion of carbons dropped, suggesting that the decrease in the microvoids caused a tighter chain packing. The copolymer and blend membrane had stable permeability compared to the PMSP. In particular, the addition of a small amount of the PP structure provided excellent stability with high gas permeability. A decrease in the unrelaxed volume of modified membranes was hardly observed with age; however, the molecular motion of some carbons slightly changed. This change did not affect the gas permeability. In this case, a larger unrelaxed volume was probably a dominant factor in the gas permeation of the PMSP rich membranes relative to the molecular motion in the T1 measurement. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Two types of polyimide membranes; one crosslinkable and the other noncrosslinkable using ultraviolet light irradiation (UV irradiation), were prepared and investigated concerning the effect of UV irradiation on their gas permeabilities and selectivities. Permeability and diffusion coefficients for O2, N2, H2, and CO2 were determined using the vacuum pressure and time lag method. Sorption properties for carbon dioxide were carried out to evaluate the changes in the free volume in the membranes due to the irradiation. In both membranes, permeability coefficients for all gases used in this study decreased and permselectivity, particularly for H2 over N2, increased with increasing UV irradiation time without a significant decrease in the flux of H2. The coefficients depended on the membrane thickness, suggesting asymmetrical changes in both membranes due to UV irradiation. It was suggested by an attenuated total reflection (ATR) FTIR method and analysis of the gas sorption properties of the membranes that the physical changes due to UV irradiation at the irradiated side in both membranes significantly affected their gas permeation properties compared with the chemical changes, especially the crosslinking in the crosslinkable type. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Poly(vinyl chloride) was reacted with sodium N-methyl dithiocarbamate to produce a modified PVC containing N-methyl dithiocarbamate of varying degrees of substitution. The resulting adducts were markedly more stable when subjected to γ-radiation than the unmodified PVC. The transport parameters (permeability, solubility, and diffusivity) of fixed gases were determined in modified and unmodified films. Although the radiation stability was dramatically improved by this novel substitution, the barrier properties of the PVC were only slightly changed by the controlled substitution of N-methyl dithiocarbamate.

    Notes: The reaction of poly(vinyl chloride) containing N-methyl-N-carboxymethyl dithiocarbamate (PSDC) with metal ions in a heterogeneous system and the effects of γ-irradiation on the reactivity were studied. Slurried PSDC has an affinity for a number of metal ions in aqueous solutions. On the basis of analyses for nitrogen and sulfur and on infrared spectra, a possible chelating structure for PSDC was deduced. The gaseous products evolved during the gamma radiolysis of PSDC under vacuum were measured. Although the dithiocarbamate group bonded to the main chain gave some protection against the dehydrochlorination of poly(vinyl chloride) component, a small amount of the carboxymethyl group was decomposed. It was found that with γ-irradiation doses up to 30 Mrad, only about 1 mole-% out of 17.6 mole-% of N-methyl-N-carboxymethyl dithiocarbamate in the polymer was decomposed. It was shown that the reactivity of the irradiated PSDC in water toward metal ions was almost the same as that before irradiation.

    Notes: Membranes of synthetic poly(α-amino acids), namely, poly(γ-methyl L-glutamate) (PMLG), poly(γ-benzyl L-glutamate) (PBLG), poly(L-glutamic acid) (PLGA), poly(L-methionine) (PLM), and poly(N∊-carbobenzoxy-L-lysine) (PCLL), were prepared and their permeabilities of oxygen dissolved in water were measured in the 8-50°C temperature range using an oxygen electrode. Permeation curves for the poly(α-amino acid) membranes did not approach steady-state currents because of membrane degradation. To eliminate this, the membranes were laminated between polystyrene membranes; thus, the poly(α-amino acid) membranes came in direct contact with neither cathode surface nor electrolyte solution. No effect of membrane thickness on the permeability was observed. The Arrhenius plots of permeability coefficients for PCLL appear to change slope at about 22°C. This is consistent with the diffusion of oxygen in PCLL through the side-chain regions between helices. Comparisons between the permeability of oxygen dissolved in water and permeability of gaseous oxygen obtained by the high-vacuum method and between the activation energy of permeation of dissolved oxygen and that of gaseous oxygen were made in order to elucidate the effect of water on the oxygen permeation of each polymer. The permeability of the poly(α-amino acid) membranes to dissolved oxygen appears to depend on the properties of the side chains of the polymers.

    Notes: Membranes of copoly(γ-methyl L-glutamate, γ-benzyl L-glutamate) (PMBLG) as well as the related homopolymer membranes were prepared, and permeabilities of oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide were measured in the 0-70°C temperature range. The values of permeability coefficients and solubility coefficients of the copolymers were smaller than those of permeability coefficients and solubility coefficients of the two homopolymers for every gas studied. The diffusion coefficients of the gases showed a minimum at around 25 mole % benzyl glutamate. The temperature at a maximum of tan δ spectra for the membranes showed a maximum at around 25 mole % benzyl glutamate. The Arrhenius plots of diffusion coefficients and solubility coefficients for PMBLG, which contained 50 and 71 mole % benzyl glutamate, showed a break at about 50 and 40°C, respectively. This permeation behavior is explained by assuming a unique interaction between methyl glutamate and benzyl glutamate side chains.

    Notes: Permeability coefficients of dissolved carbon dioxide in poly(dimethyl siloxane), plasmatreated poly(dimethyl siloxane) membranes, and other membranes were measured by applying a carbon dioxide electrode in a liquid to liquid diffusion cell. The apparent permeability coefficients of carbon dioxide polystyrene, low density polyethylene, and nylon membranes in a liquid phase were observed to be higher than those in a gas phase due to a plasticizing effect of water molecules in the membranes. Boundary layer's resistance was estimated for plasma-treated and nontreated poly(dimethyl siloxane) membranes. The plasma treatment (10 W for 1 min in this study) which makes hydrophilic surfaces without change of bulk polymer properties was found to be effective to decrease the boundary layer's thickness and to increase the apparent permeability coefficient in the liquid phase.
