    Description: This paper reviews progress on understanding biological carbon sequestration in the ocean with special reference to the microbial formation and transformation of recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (RDOC), the microbial car bon pump (MCP). We propose that RDOC is a concept with a wide continuum of recalcitrance. Most RDOC compounds maintain their levels of recalcitrance only in a specific environmental context (RDOCt). The ocean RDOC pool also contains compounds that may be inaccessible to microbes due to their extremely low concentration (RDOCc). This differentiation allows us to appreciate the linkage between microbial source and RDOC composition on a range of temporal and spatial scales. Analyses of biomarkers and isotopic records show intensive MCP processes in the Proterozoic oceans when the MCP could have played a significant role in regulating climate. Understanding the dynamics of the MCP in conjunction with the better constrained biological pump (BP) over geological timescales could help to predict future climate trends. Integration of the MCP and the BP will require new research approaches and opportunities. Major goals include understanding the interactions between particulate organic carbon (POC) and RDOC that contribute to sequestration efficiency, and the concurrent determination of the chemical composition of organic carbon, microbial community composition and enzymatic activity. Molecular biomarkers and isotopic tracers should be employed to link water column processes to sediment records, as well as to link present-day observations to paleo-evolution. Ecosystem models need to be developed based on empirical relationships derived from bioassay experiments and field investigations in order to predict the dynamics of carbon cycling along the stability continuum of POC and RDOC under potential global change scenarios. We propose that inorganic nutrient input to coastal waters may reduce the capacity for carbon sequestration as RDOC. The nutrient regime enabling maximum carbon storage from combined POC flux and RDOC formation should therefore be sought.

    Notes: The nature of pulsed ruby laser-induced vaporization from the surface of a binary oxide represented by ZnxFe3−xO4 (x∼1) is studied via morphological (scanning electron microscopy), compositional (energy-dispersive analysis of x ray), structural (small-angle x-ray diffraction), and microstructural (conversion electron Mössbauer) examination of the laser-processed surface and correlation of the related surface modification to the properties of thin films deposited therefrom, and subjected to similar examination. Zinc ferrite (ZnxFe3−xO4) films have been deposited on single-crystal Al2O3 substrates and the dependence of the film properties on the oxygen partial pressure and substrate temperature during deposition is studied to explore optimized conditions for deposition of near single-phase stoichiometric films.

    Notes: The influence of the tensile stress on the flux reversal phenomena in as-quenched state of Fe77.5Si7.5B15 is investigated. A large and stable Barkhausen jump is observed at a field H*, called the switching field. The switching field H* passes through a minimum as tensile stress increases and the jump in magnetization M* at H* grows with stress. It is observed that H* of the sample can be modified by flash annealing under stress. The results on magnetic properties like coercive field, squareness ratio, power loss of as-quenched and stress-annealed samples are presented. The stress annealing induces elastic and plastic components in anisotropy.

    Notes: Measurement of the magnetostriction constant of amorphous wire by conventional techniques is very difficult because of its small diameter. However, accurate determination of the magnetostriction constant is important in the study of amorphous wires. Here the saturation magnetostriction constant (λs) for a low-magnetostriction amorphous wire of nominal composition (Fe6.3Co92.7Nb1)77.5Si7.5B15 has been determined by means of the small-angle magnetization-rotation method. λs has been evaluated to be 2.1×10−7 for its as-received state. The dependence of thermal treatment is also reported.

    Notes: Magnetic properties of a hydrogenated amorphous Fe–Si–B fiber have been studied. Hydrogen was charged electrochemically. Saturation magnetization and the switching characteristics of the fiber have been investigated for different charging conditions. Saturation magnetization is found to decrease with the increase of charging time and charging current density. Variation of switching characteristics with the charging conditions is rather complex. Magnetic properties have also been studied during degassing of hydrogen. Hydrogen inside the specimen induces tensile stress due to volume expansion and at the same time modifies Fe–Fe exchange interaction. The magnetic behavior due to hydrogenation and during degassing have been explained by considering the dual role of hydrogen inside the fiber.

    Notes: The interconnection between quantum mechanics and probabilistic classical mechanics for a free relativistic particle is derived in terms of Wigner functions (WF) for both Dirac and Klein-Gordon (K-G) equations. Construction of WF is achieved by first defining a bilocal 4-current and then taking its Fourier transform w.r.t. the relative 4-coordinate. The K-G and Proca cases also lend themselves to a closely parallel treatment provided the Kemmer-Duffin β-matrix formalism is employed for the former. Calculation of WF is carried out in a Lorentz-covariant fashion by standard "trace" techniques. The results are compared with a recent derivation due to Bosanac. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Iron oxide films have been deposited on alumina substrates by pulsed ruby laser evaporation from a bulk α-Fe2O3 pellet. The films have been characterized by using the techniques of conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering, and scanning electron microscopy. It is demonstrated that the stoichiometry of the deposited film can be varied between FeO and Fe3O4 by controlling the oxygen partial pressure during deposition over a range from 5×10−7 to 10−4 Torr. It is further shown that the Fe3O4 film can be converted into γ-Fe2O3 by suitable thermal annealing treatment.
