Notes: Summary In order to study the role of -SH group of wool in graft copolymerization, an attempt has been made to study grafting of acrylic acid (AAc) onto reduced wool in aqueous medium using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as redox initiator. HNO3 was found to catalyze the graft copolymerization. Reduction of wool was effected with thioglycolic acid (TGA) in aqueous medium. Percentage of grafting was determined as a function of concentration of (i) CAN, (ii) vinyl monomer (AAc), (iii) nitric acid, (iv) time and (v) temperature. Under optimum conditions, poly-(acrylic acid) was grafted to the reduced wool to the extent of 9.14%, the unreduced wool under optimum conditions afforded maximum grafting of poly(AAc) to the extent of 12.24%. Reduction of wool does not promote grafting of AAc in the presence of CAN.

Notes: Abstract Paramagnetic resonance in a free radical, Diphenyl-Picryl-Hydrazyl, has been studied and the results are compared with those of other workers. Low temperature work indicated that the transition from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic state should occur at 1° K.

Notes: Abstract Cultures ofAzolla pinnata Lam., grown in various mixtures of soil plus industrial waste from a chlor-alkali factory for 30 to 60 days, resulted in the addition of significant amounts of nitrogen and organic carbon to the growing medium. A considerable decrease in the alkaline pH of the waste/soil was also recorded. On transplantation of rice seedlings into the waste/soil mixtures, after 60 days of Azolla culture it was observed that the rice survived and continued to grow in mixtures containing 30% waste whereas, in control conditions, seedlings failed to survive in above 15% waste/soil combinations.

Notes: Summary In order to ascertain the role of -SH groups in graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers onto Himachali wool fiber, an attempt has been made to graft copolymerize ethylacrylate (EA) onto reduced wool, in the presence of cerie sulfate (CS) as redox initiator in aqueous medium. Reduction of wool was carried out with thioglycolic acid (TGA) in aqueous solution. Percentage of grafting and percent efficiency were determined as functions of (a) Concentration of initiator (CS), (b) Concentration of monomer (EA), (c) Concentration of Sulfuric acid, (d) Time and (e) Temperature. Reduction of wool does not promote grafting of EA. The unreduced wool during ceric ion-initiated grafting of EA was reported earlier from this laboratory to produce more grafting. In ceric ion-initiated grafting of vinyl monomer onto wool, -SH groups do not play significant role. A plausible mechanism of grafting of EA onto reduced wool in the presence of ceric ion initiator has been suggested.

Notes: Radiation-induced graft copolymerization of 4-vinyl pyridine (VP) and a binary mixture of VP and acrylonitrile (AN) onto polyamide-6 (PA6) fiber has been studied. Optimum reaction conditions leading to maximum percentage of grafting have been evaluated. The graft copolymers have been characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and also by studying the dyeing behaviour of the grafted and ungrafted fiber. It has been observed that, although the thermal properties of fibers had changed upon grafting, the dyeing behaviour, with respect to the total dye uptake, did show only little improvement.

Notes: In an attempt to modify water-soluble synthetic polymers, graft Copolymerization of methylmethacrylate (MMA) and ethyl acrylate (EA) onto poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA, has been studied by using gamma irradiation from a Co60 source as initiator. The graft copolymerization was carried out in an aqueous medium by the mutual method in air. The effect of total dose and concentration of vinyl monomers on percentage of grafting has been determined. Water plays a significant role in the enhancement of graft copolymerization and the optimum amount of water to afford maximum grafting has been evaluated. The effect of CH3OH on aqueous grafting of MMA and EA by radiation method has been studied. The graft copolymer has been characterized by IR spectroscopic and thermogravimetric methods.
