Notes: The Swakane Gneiss and the overlying Napeequa Complex in the North Cascade range, Washington, were metamorphosed and deformed during development of a Cretaceous-Paleogene continental arc, and are among the structurally deepest exposed rocks within the Cordilleran arcs of North America. Peak metamorphic conditions in both the Swakane Gneiss and Napeequa Complex were c. 640–750 °C, 9–12 kbar. Clockwise paths and widespread evidence for high-P metamorphism in meta-supracrustal rocks (burial to 〉40 km) document major vertical tectonic motion during arc construction and unroofing. These and other moderately high-pressure rocks in the North Cascades-Coast Mountains experienced a dramatically different tectonometamorphic history than metamorphic rocks within other Cordilleran arcs. The exhumed arc complexes of the Sierra Nevada and Peninsular Ranges are dominated by relatively low-P metamorphic and plutonic rocks (typically 〈6 kbar). There is no evidence that the northern Cordillera was thickened to a greater degree than these other belts, suggesting that the greater magnitude of vertical motion in the Cascades may have been related to exhumation mechanisms: Eocene extension in the northern Cordillera vs. erosional unroofing in the central and southern Cordillera.

Notes: We have investigated the physical mechanisms involved in the explosive electron emission process for dielectric cathode materials such as velvet. We have determined that explosive emission from velvet is initiated by a surface flashover mechanism when the electric field exceeds 16 kV/cm. We have also measured the characteristic polarization time of velvet to be 90 ns. The surface discharge gives rise to a cold, dense plasma/gas column in nearly every fiber tuft on the velvet surface. The corresponding average material erosion rate for most velvets of 3×1015 mole/cm2 limits the velvet lifetime to approximately 105 pulses. We have devised a phenomenological model based on resistive heating of the plasma columns which appears to give a good estimate for the final diode-plasma closure velocity. The theory predicts that the square root of the average electric field in the diode is the most important scaling parameter. We have devised practical guidelines for pulse duration limitations for velvet cathodes arising from gap closure and pulse repetition rate phenomena. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The electron beam in a linear induction accelerator is generally susceptible to growth of the transverse beam breakup instability. In this paper we analyze a new technique for reducing the transverse coupling between the beam and the accelerating cavities, thereby reducing beam breakup growth. The basic idea is that the most worrisome cavity modes can be cutoff by a short section of coaxial transmission line inserted between the cavity structure and the accelerating gap region. We have used the three-dimensional simulation code SOS to analyze this problem. In brief, we find that the technique works, provided that the lowest TE mode cutoff frequency in the coaxial line is greater than the frequency of the most worrisome TM mode of the accelerating cavity.

Notes: In this paper we develop a new approach for controlling the electron trajectories in a relativistic electron beam diode which is based on appropriately contouring an externally generated, axial magnetic field. The technique provides a convenient method of matching a beam produced by a shielded source injector into a uniform solenoidal transport system of a linear induction accelerator. To illustrate the method, we analyze a simple diode geometry and compare the analytical results with trajectory code calculations.

Notes: Summary 1. On the basis of a correlation analysis, a relation has been established between the distillation curve and the viscosity, density, and flash point of TS-1 fuel. 2. It is proposed to eliminate from the routine laboratory analyses the determination of distillation curve, using instead special conversion tables. This provides a considerable saving in laboratory working time (12 man-hours per day) and increases the effectiveness of process control in units for the primary distillation of crude oil.

Notes: Summary A high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure employing ultraviolet detection for the analysis of benzalkonium chloride in 0.5% Tramadol ophthalmic solution is reported. The method requires minimal sample pretreatment and is sensitive, accurate, and reproducible. The peak area versus BAK concentration is linear over the range of 50–150% of its label claim of 0.05 mg/mL. The mean absolute recovery of BAK using the described method is 100.2±1.2%, (mean ±SD, n=10). A stress study with heat, acid, base and UV radiation indicates that the method is stabilityindicating with no interference from drug or degradation products.

Notes: Summary A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) procedure using ultra-violet (UV) detection for the analysis of 17β-estradiol-3-phosphate in an ophthalmic solution is reported. The method is selective, accurate, and reproducible. The peak area versus 17β-estradiol-3-phosphate concentration is linear over the range of 50–150% of its label claim of 1.0 mg/mL, with a detection limit of 20 ng/mL. The mean absolute recovery of 17β-estradiol-3-phosphate using the described method is 99.8±0.6% (mean ±SD, n=10). A stress study with heat, acid, base and UV radiation indicates that the method is stability-indicating with no interference from excipients or degradation products.

Notes: Summary The development and subsequent validation of an isocratic high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) procedure employing ultraviolet (UV) detection for the determination of degradation products in Dipyridamole Injection is reported. The development of this assay involved the evaluation of several factors including buffer type, ionic strength, pH, organic composition, and column type. The described method is simple, reproducible, accurate, and selective. The precision, relative standard deviation (RSD), amongst five sample preparations for total degradation products was not more than (NMT) 10.2 %, while the individual degradation products were NMT 12.1%. Intermediate precision, as determined from fifteen sample preparations, generated by two Analysts on different HPLC systems over three days, exhibited an RSD for total and individual degradation products of 8.2 % and NMT 27.5 %, respectively. The mean absolute recovery of dipyridamole using the described method is 102.1±1. 9%, (mean±SD, n=12) over the concentration range of 0.03 % to 5.0 % of its label claim of 5 mg mL−1. The limit of detection and limit of quantitation were 0.1 and 0.3 μg mL−1, respectively. The linearity of the peak response was verified with respect to dipyridamole concentration over a range of 0.3 and 50 μg mL−1 (0.03 % to 5.0 % label claim). The Standard and Assay Preparations are stable for up to 48 hours at room temperature. The selectivity was evaluated by subjecting the finished product (Dipyridamole Injection) to thermal, acidic, basic, oxidative and fluorescent radiation stress conditions. No interference in the analysis of degradation products was observed, showing the method is stability-indicating.
