    Notes: Abstract: Many organizations today have an interest in communications networks, either as users of public networks or as operators of their own private networks. Thus, the management of communications networks has become an important issue in the communications industry. The network design task is fundamental to the whole notion of network management; however, with the rapid rate of change in network technology and the emergence of highly sophisticated network users, network design has become an increasingly complex problem.The purpose of this paper is to describe a development effort which incorporates expert systems techniques to treat one aspect of the network design problem—the initial planning and design of a network prior to implementation. The research effort was concerned with developing an expert system for Amdahl Communications Products which could be used by sales engineers in designing wide area networks to meet specified customer requirements. The system treats both the topological design problem and the component configuration problem.

    Notes: The purpose of this paper is to describe the process of productivity management and potential expert systems applications at each stage of productivity analysis. Based on literature reviews it discusses the strengths and limitations of these technologies. Describes several tasks in the measurement, interpretation and evaluation phases and examines the appropriateness of an expert systems application. Finds that expert systems applications could be useful in interpretation and evaluation. Focuses on productivity analysis at the organizational-level only. Opines that business managers with limited or no knowledge of productivity models may want to have expert systems applications developed to diagnose problems and take corrective actions in a timely manner. The paper could be useful to business practitioners as well as researchers. Contributions include a detailed description of productivity analysis and how and where expert systems applications could make a difference. Productivity management is critical for long-term business survival.

    Notes: In the light of growing global competition, organizations around the world today are constantly under pressure to produce high-quality products at an economical price. The integration of design and manufacturing activities into one common engineering effort has been recognized as a key strategy for survival and growth. Design for manufacturability (DFM) is an approach to design that fosters the simultaneous involvement of product design and process design. The implementation of the DFM approach requires the collaboration of both the design and manufacturing functions within an organization. Many reasons can be cited for the inability to implement the DFM approach effectively, including: lack of interdisciplinary expertise of designers; inflexibility in organizational structure, which hinders interaction between design and manufacturing functions; lack of manufacturing cost information at the design phase; and absence of integrated engineering effort intended to maximize functional and manufacturability objectives. The purpose of this research is to show how expert systems methodology could be used to provide manufacturability expertise during the design phase of a product. An object- and rule-based expert system has been developed that has the capability: (1) to make process selection decisions based on a set of design and production parameters to achieve cost-effective manufacture; and (2) to estimate manufacturing cost based on the identified processes. The expertise for primary process selection is developed for casting and forging processes. The specialized processes considered are die casting, investment casting, sand casting, precision forging, open die forging and conventional die forging. The processes considered for secondary process selection are end milling and drilling. The cost estimation expertise is developed for the die casting process, the milling and drilling operations, and the manual assembly operations. The results obtained from the application of the expert system suggest that the use of expert systems methodology is a feasible method for implementing the DFM approach.

    Notes: Abstract A hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) is proposed for the single machine, single stage, scheduling problem in a sequence dependent setup time environment within a fixed planning horizon (SSSDP). It incorporates the elitist ranking method, genetic operators, and a hill-climbing technique in each searching area. To improve the performance and efficiency, hill climbing is performed by uniting the Wagner-Whitin Algorithm with the problem-specific knowledge. The objective of the HGA is to minimize the sum of setup cost, inventory cost, and backlog cost. The HGA is able to obtain a superior solution, if it is not optimal, in a reasonable time. The computational results of this algorithm on real life SSSDP problems are promising. In our test cases, the HGA performed up to 50% better than the Just-In-Time heuristics and 30% better than the complete batching heuristics.
