    Notes: Abstract The concentration of fluoride in the body parts of a range of Antarctic crustaceans from a variety of habits was examined with the aim of determining whether fluoride concentration is related to lifestyle or phylogenetic grouping. Euphausiids had the highest overall fluoride concentrations of a range of Antarctic marine crustaceans examined; levels of up to 5477 μg g−1 were found in the exoskeleton of Euphausia crystallorophias. Copepods had the lowest fluoride levels (0.87 μg g−1 whole-body); some amphipods and mysids also exhibited relatively high fluoride levels. There was no apparent relationship between the lifestyle of the crustaceans and their fluoride level; benthic and pelagic species exhibited both high and low fluoride levels. Fluoride was concentrated in the exoskeleton, but not evenly distributed through it; the exoskeleton of the head, carapace and abdomen contained the highest concentrations of fluoride, followed by the feeding basket and pleopods, and the eyes. The mouthparts of E.␣superba contained almost 13 000 μg F g−1 dry wt. Antarctic krill tail muscle had low levels of fluoride. After long-term (1 to 5 yr) storage in formalin, fluoride was almost completely lost from whole euphausiids.

    Notes: Abstract Growth rate, survival, and stimulation of the production of UV-B (280 to 320 nm) absorbing compounds were investigated in cultures of five commonly occurring Antarctic marine diatoms exposed to a range of UV-B irradiances. Experimental UV-B exposures ranged from 20 to 650% of the measured peak surface irradiance at an Antarctic coastal site (0.533 J m-2 s-1). The five diatom species (Nitzschia lecointei, Proboscia alata, P. inermis, Thalassiosira tumida and Stellarima microtrias) appear capable of surviving two to four times this irradiance. In contrast to Phaeocystis cf. pouchetii, another major component of the Antarctic phytoplankton, the concentrations of pigments with discrete UV absorption peaks in diatoms were low and did not change significantly under increasing UV-B irradiance. Absorbance of UV-B by cells from which pigments had been extracted commonly greatly exceeded that of the pigments themselves. Most of this absorbance was due to oxidisable cell contents, with the frustule providing the remainder. Survival of diatoms did not correlate with absorption by either pigments, frustules or oxidisable cell contents, indicating that their survival under elevated UV-B irradiances results from processes other than screening mechanisms.

    Notes: Fractographic analyses have been used to explain the cyclic crack growth behaviour of A533-B, Ducol W30, a C-Mn steel and type 304 stainless steel in simulated light water reactor environments at ambient temperature. Fractographic observations have offered an explanation for anomalous crack growth behaviour and have also indicated where micro structural or environmental variables dominate in producing certain fracture modes and crack growth rates. An understanding of the operative corrosion fatigue mechanisms has been formulated through these fractographic analyses. Environmental crack growth in the ferritic steels has been described by a model involving both anodic dissolution and hydrogen embrittlement. Conditions where only one of these mechanisms would dominate have been identified and limits to their effect postulated. A crystallographic mode of failure observed in the austenitic type 304 stainless steel has also been explained by a selective dissolution process.

    Notes: Abstract One-centimeter-scale vertical sampling of fast ice from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica reveals evidence of progressive nutrient limitation with distance above the ice/water interface. Over the bottom 6 cm photosynthetically active radiation increases by between 1.8 and 3 times, C:N increases from 6.8 to 19.8 and δ13C increases from −18 to −12. Fatty acid composition also changes with a consistent decline in polyunsaturated fatty acids and a rise in saturated fatty acids. These factors all suggest severe and progressive nutrient limitation with distance from the ice/water interface.

    Notes: Abstract  Algae released from fast-ice in Ellis Fjord, eastern Antarctica, made little contribution to subsequent phytoplankton growth. Dominant taxa in the interior ice community included Nitzschia cylindrus (Grun) Hasle, Navicula glaciei V.H. and a dinoflagellate cyst. Diatom mortality within the ice was high. The algal contribution to the phytoplankton from the fast ice was estimated by calculating the difference between algal biomass in ice cores taken on 14 November with those taken on 18 December 1992. The biomass of sedimenting phytoplankton was estimated using sediment traps; weekly cell counts of water were used to monitor net phytoplankton growth. The low contribution from the fast-ice of Ellis Fjord to the phytoplankton is similar to results from other Antarctic fast-ice communities but is not necessarily reflective of processes occurring within either Antarctic or Arctic pack ice communities. An algal mat growing on the base of the fast-ice had a carbon standing crop of between 0.231 gC m-2 and 0.022 gC m-2. Much of this was delivered to the water column as the ice melted while the remainder was exported.

    Notes: Abstract The relationship between surface sediment diatom assemblages and measured limnological variables in thirty-three coastal Antarctic lakes from the Vestfold Hills was examined by constructing a diatom-water chemistry dataset. Previous analysis of this dataset by canonical correspondence analysis revealed that salinity accounted for a significant amount of the variation in the distribution of the diatom assemblages. Weighted-averaging regression and calibration of this diatom-salinity relationship was used to establish a transfer function for the reconstruction of past lakewater salinity from fossil diatom assemblages. Weighted-averaging regression and calibration with classical deshrinking provided the best model for salinity reconstructions and this was applied to the fossil diatom assemblages from one of the saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills in order to assess its potential for palaeosalinity and palaeoclimate reconstruction.
