    Description: Increased plant biomass is observed in terrestrial systems due to rising levels of atmospheric CO2, but responses of marine macroalgae to CO2 enrichment are unclear. The 200% increase in CO2 by 2100 is predicted to enhance the productivity of fleshy macroalgae that acquire inorganic carbon solely as CO2 (non‐carbon dioxide‐concentrating mechanism [CCM] species-i.e., species without a carbon dioxide‐concentrating mechanism), whereas those that additionally uptake bicarbonate (CCM species) are predicted to respond neutrally or positively depending on their affinity for bicarbonate. Previous studies, however, show that fleshy macroalgae exhibit a broad variety of responses to CO2 enrichment and the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. This physiological study compared the responses of a CCM species (Lomentaria australis) with a non‐CCM species (Craspedocarpus ramentaceus) to CO2 enrichment with regards to growth, net photosynthesis, and biochemistry. Contrary to expectations, there was no enrichment effect for the non‐CCM species, whereas the CCM species had a twofold greater growth rate, likely driven by a downregulation of the energetically costly CCM(s). This saved energy was invested into new growth rather than storage lipids and fatty acids. In addition, we conducted a comprehensive literature synthesis to examine the extent to which the growth and photosynthetic responses of fleshy macroalgae to elevated CO2 are related to their carbon acquisition strategies. Findings highlight that the responses of macroalgae to CO2 enrichment cannot be inferred solely from their carbon uptake strategy, and targeted physiological experiments on a wider range of species are needed to better predict responses of macroalgae to future oceanic change.

    Notes: Abstract Steroid 21-hydroxylase deficiency is caused by mutations in the CYP21 gene. Approximately 95% of mutant alleles are generated by recombination events between the acitve gene CYP21 and its highly homologous pseudogene, CYP21P. Deletion alleles are generated by unequal crossing over, while point mutations are the result of gene conversion events. Deletions account for 20–25% of the 21-hydroxylase deficiency alleles in most populations studied. We have looked for deletions among 53 unrelated Mexican patients with steroid 21-hydroxylase deficiency and found that deletions represent less than 1% of the disease alleles. These findings suggest that nearly all mutant alleles in our patient population contain point mutations and that the low representation of deletion alleles among clinically diagnosed patients may be due to missing detection of salt wasters, mainly males, who may die during the neonatal period.

    Notes: Abstract Acetobacter diazotrophicus is a diazotrophic bacterium that colonizes sugarcane tissues. Glucose is oxidized to gluconate in the periplasm prior to uptake and metabolism. A membrane-bound glucose dehydrogenase quinoenzyme [which contains pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) as the prosthetic group] is involved in that oxidation. Gluconate is oxidized further via the hexose monophosphate pathway and tricarboxylic acid cycle. A. diazotrophicus PAL3 was grown in a chemostat with atmospheric nitrogen as the sole N source provided that the dissolved oxygen was maintained at 1.0–2.0% air saturation. The biomass yields of A. diazotrophicus growing with glucose or gluconate with fixed N were very low compared with other heterotrophic bacteria. The biomass yields under N-fixing conditions were more than 30% less than with ammonium as the N source using gluconate as the carbon source but, surprisingly, were only about 14% less with glucose. The following scheme for the metabolism of A. diazotrophicus through the different pathways emerged: (1) the respiratory chain of this organism had a different efficiency of ATP production in the respiratory chain (P:O ratio) under different culture conditions; and (2) N fixation was one (but not the sole) condition under which a higher P:O ratio was observed. The other condition appears to be the expression of an active PQQ-linked glucose dehydrogenase.

    Notes: Abstract The quasigeostrophic theory is used to address the role of diabatic forcing in synoptic scale processes over Iberia. A parametrization of diabatic heating is obtained in terms of a thermodynamic variable called the ice-liquid water potential temperature which is conservative under all phase changes of water. A case study objectively selected by means of a rotated principal component analysis over the diabatic field is analyzed to test the proposed parametrization. This study highlights the fact that the magnitudes of diabatic forcing and dynamic forcing are very nearly the same throughout the troposphere. The results also show that the composite diabatic heating is a better representation for both cloudiness and precipitation fields than the dynamic forcing.

    Notes: Abstract The heavy rain event of 30 January to 4 February 1993 in the Segura Basin in SE Iberia is investigated. The study emphasizes the atmospheric processes that led to thunderstorm development. The meteorological scenario has been separated into preconvective and convective periods and into large-scale and subsynoptic settings. The warm, moist air now from the Mediterranean Sea, channelled by a high-over-low blocking pattern with a cold front over southeastern Iberia appears to be the main reason that helped trigger a severe weather occurrence. The study of the mesoscale environment parameters showed an enhanced conditional unstability through a deep troposphere layer with a moderate to strong vertical wind shear that promoted conditions to allow organization of long-lived convective structures.

    Notes: We have studied the intermittent contact mode for small oscillation amplitudes and soft cantilevers with sharp tips. For appropriate working conditions the tip does not touch the mica surface. Instead, a high dissipative tip–sample interaction takes place which reduces the oscillation amplitude of the cantilever. Our experiments show that this dissipative interaction is related to the relative humidity and we believe that it is induced by a nanometer sized liquid neck between tip and sample. A phase contrast image on different surface materials is then due mainly to the wetting properties of the corresponding material rather than to their elastic or viscoelastic properties. The intermittent contact mode described in this work is especially advantageous since the tip is extremely gentle with the surface. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
