Description / Table of Contents: Fold-and-thrust belts occur worldwide, have formed in all eras of geological time, and are widely recognized as the most common mode in which the crust accommodates shortening. Much current research on the structure of fold-and-thrust belts is focused on structural studies of regions or individual structures and on the geometry and evolution of these regions employing kinematic, mechanical and experimental modelling. In keeping with the main trends of current research, this title is devoted to the kinematic evolution and structural styles of a number of fold-and-thrust belts formed from Palaeozoic to Recent times. The papers included in this book cover a broad range of different topics, from modelling approaches to predict internal deformation of single structures, 3D reconstructions to decipher the structural evolution of groups of structures, palaeomagnetic studies of portions of fold-and-thrust belts, geometrical and kinematical aspects of Coulomb thrust wedges and structural analyses of fold-and-thrust belts to unravel their sequence of deformations.

Notes: It is demonstrated how a recently devised graphical method for estimating palaeostresses from exposed striated fault planes can be adapted for use with earthquake focal mechanism data. Provided the data set includes one or more earthquakes for which the fault plane can be identified, the principal stress directions can be determined more precisely than by using the alternative Right Dihedra method. Using the new so-called Right Trihedra method stress directions are found which are compatible with recent British earthquakes. The method can also be used, in the case of some focal mechanisms, to resolve the ambiguity regarding which focal plane corresponds to the fault plane.

Notes: Abstract Procedures are outlined for the selection of a least squares best-fit circle to data points defined by rectangular Cartesian coordinates. Equations are derived to allow fitting of circles centered on the x-axis as well as off-axis Mohr circles. These procedures are applicable to the estimation of second-order tensors such as stress and strain by means of Mohr's diagram.

Notes: Abstract An approximating form for coarse water-worn clasts based on the superellipsoid is proposed. The sectional outlines of pebbles from Gower (Wales) beaches approximate superellipses described by this equation in rectangular coordinates $$\frac{{x^p }}{{a^p }} + \frac{{x^p }}{{b^p }} = 1$$ wherea andb are principal semi-axes. For AB planes of the pebbles,p is close to 2, but in AC sections,p averages about 2.6. The measured volumes of pebbles are poor approximations to the previously proposed ellipsoidal model of pebble form. Instead, volumes are shown to accord with a three-dimensional form consisting of a superellipsoid of revolution, i.e., a solid of revolution produced by rotating a superellipse about one of its principal axes.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Twenty-eight quartz c-axis fabrics from individual pebbles from a single outcrop of deformed conglomerate have been measured. These pebbles vary in composition and have undergone different amounts of strain. Contrary to expectations based on published results of computer simulated deformation by intracrystalline slip of pure quartzites, it is observed that fabrics are not stronger in the more highly deformed pebbles. Instead, the fabric strength is related to the quartz content of the pebbles. Pure quartzites show the strongest fabrics. As the percentage of non-quartz minerals increases up to 25% the strength of the fabrics rapidly decreases, though the influence of composition becomes less marked when impurities exceed 25%. These observations can be explained if the deformation of the impure quartzites included a contribution from a non-intracrystalline mechanism such as grain boundary sliding.
