Notizen: [Auszug] Myocardial infarction leads to loss of tissue and impairment of cardiac performance. The remaining myocytes are unable to reconstitute the necrotic tissue, and the post-infarcted heart deteriorates with time. Injury to a target organ is sensed by distant stem cells, which migrate to the site of ...

Notizen: [Auszug] Recent numerical-modelling and seismological results have raised new questions about the dynamics, and magnetism, of the Earth's core. Knowledge of the elasticity and texture of iron, at core pressures is crucial for understanding the seismological observations, such as the low attenuation of ...

Notizen: Abstract In the 1960s, E. Schreiber and his colleagues pioneered the use of hot-pressed polycrystalline aggregates for studies of the pressure and temperature dependence of the elastic wave velocities in minerals. We have extended this work to the high-pressure polymorphs of mantle minerals by developing techniques to fabricate large polycrystalline specimens in a 2000-ton uniaxial split-sphere apparatus. A new cell assembly has been developed to extend this capability to pressures of 20 GPa and temperatures of 1700°C. Key elements in the new experimental design include: a telescopic LaCrO3 forT〉1200°C; Toshiba Tungaloy grade F tungsten carbide anvils; and the use of homogeneous glasses or seeded powder mixtures as starting material to enhance reactivity and maximize densities. Cell temperatures are linearly related to electrical power to 1700°C and uniform throughout the 3 mm specimens. Pressure calibrations at 25°C and 1700°C are identical to 15 GPa. Cylindrical specimens of the beta and spinel phases of Mg2SiO4, stishovite (SiO2-rutile), and majorite-pyrope garnets have been synthesized within their stability fields in runs of 1–4 hr duration and recovered at ambient conditions by simultaneously decompressing and cooling along a computer-controlledP-T path designed to preserve the high-pressure phase and to relax intergranualar stress in the polycrystalline aggregate. These specimens are single-phased, fine-grained (〈5 micron), free of microcracks and preferred orientation, and have bulk densities greater than 99% of X-ray density. The successful fabrication of these high-quality polycrystalline specimens has made possible experiments to determine the pressure dependence of acoustic velocities in the ultrasonics laboratory of S. M. Rigden and I. Jackson at the Australian National University.

Notizen: Abstract Using a DIA-type, cubic-anvil, high-pressure apparatus (SAM-85) in conjunction with in situ X-ray diffraction, we have investigated phase relations between coesite and stishovite up to 12 GPa and 1530 °C using synthetic powders of the two phases as the starting materials. The phase transition between coesite and stishovite was identified by observing the first appearance of a phase that did not already exist or by a change in the relative intensity of the two patterns. In most experiments, the diffraction patterns on samples were collected within 10 minutes after reaching a pressure and temperature condition. On this time scale, two phase boundaries associated with the coesite-stishovite transition have been determined: (1) for the stishovite-to-coesite transition, observations were made in the temperature range of 950–1530 °C, and (2) for the coesite-to-stishovite transition from 500 to 1300 °C. These observations reveal that there exists a critical temperature of about 1000 °C to constrain the coesite-stishovite equilibrium phase boundary. Above this temperature, both boundaries are linear, have positive dP/dT slopes, and lie within a pressure interval of 0.4 GPa. Below this temperature, the dP/dT slope for the stishovite-to-coesite phase boundary becomes significantly larger and that for the coesite-tostishovite phase boundary changes from positive to negative. As a result, an equilibrium phase boundary can only be determined from the results above 1000 °C and is described by a linear equation P (GPa)=6.1 (4)+ 0.0026 (2) T (°C). This dP/dT slope is in good agreement with that of Zhang et al. (1993) but more than twice that of Yagi and Akimoto (1976). For the kinetics of the phase transition, preliminary rate data were obtained for the stishovite-to-coesite transition at 1160 and 1430 °C and are in agreement with the simple geometric transformation model of Avrami and Cahn.

Beschreibung: Reconstruction of the generation, development, and evolution of modern storms through paleotempestology is used to understand the regularity of storm activity and the relationship between storm activity and global climate change. Existing paleotempestology research in China is concentrated mainly on the low latitude sediments deposited since the Holocene (about 7000 a). In this study, we examine the storm deposits in the eolian sediments of the Bohai Sea coastal zone at middle latitudes, choosing the Miaodao stratigraphic section (MDS) as the target area. This area is located in the Bohai Sea strait and shows evidence of storms since the last interglacial period using an analysis of the grain size parameter, element ratios, and marine micropaleontology foraminifera fossils in the sediment during the last 130 ka that can be used in our paleotempestology research. The results include three main findings: (1) the marine micropaleontology foraminifer fossils appear in the eolian sediment of the MDS and, in combination with grain size parameter and element ratios of the sediments, serve as evidence of the paleotempestology record on the Bohai Sea coastal zone; (2) planktonic foraminifera fossils appear in the MDS, indicating that the Yellow Sea warm current affected the Bohai Sea during the last interglacial period; and (3) storm activity in the marine isotope stage (MIS) 5a has been recorded in the MDS 15 times. The findings of this study expand the paleotempestology record from 7000 a to 90 ka and serve as a reference for research for middle latitude storm activity.

Beschreibung: Underwater acoustic (UWA) channels are wideband in nature due to the small ratio of the carrier frequency to the signal bandwidth, which introduces frequency-dependent Doppler shifts. In this paper, we treat the channel as having a common Doppler scaling factor on all propagation paths, and propose a two-step approach to mitigating the Doppler effect: 1) nonuniform Doppler compensation via resampling that converts a "wideband" problem into a "narrowband" problem and 2) high-resolution uniform compensation of the residual Doppler. We focus on zero-padded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to minimize the transmission power. Null subcarriers are used to facilitate Doppler compensation, and pilot subcarriers are used for channel estimation. The receiver is based on block-by-block processing, and does not rely on channel dependence across OFDM blocks; thus, it is suitable for fast-varying UWA channels. The data from two shallow-water experiments near Woods Hole, MA, are used to demonstrate the receiver performance. Excellent performance results are obtained even when the transmitter and the receiver are moving at a relative speed of up to 10 kn, at which the Doppler shifts are greater than the OFDM subcarrier spacing. These results suggest that OFDM is a viable option for high-rate communications over wideband UWA channels with nonuniform Doppler shifts.
