Notes: An evolution equation of microcracks for brittle cracked materials subjected to an applied dynamic tensile pressure is presented. The influence of inertial effects (or kinetics) on the dynamic growth of microcracks, which is a major characteristic of intense dynamic loading, is taken into account. Numerical analysis of the evolution equation clearly indicates that microcrack growth at high strain rate (ε(overdot)≥103 s−1) is unstable. The critical condition for microcrack dynamic growth is obtained. It is predicted that the threshold stress for dynamic growth of microcracks is dependent on the average strain rate at super-high strain rate (ε(overdot)≥106 s−1); however, numerical result is also shown that when the average strain rate ≤105 s−1, the threshold stress can be, approximately, taken to be a constant. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Boron was implanted into the p-type Hg0.7Cd0.3Te epitaxial crystals. The implantation was carried out using a fluence of 1.45×1015 cm−2 and an energy of 100 keV. The implanted specimens, as well as unimplanted ones, were annealed without encapsulation by one-zone annealing in an atmosphere of mercury vapor supplied from liquid mercury at temperatures from 250–500 °C. From the annealing of unimplanted specimens, a p-n transition at 350 °C is observed. On the other hand, from the annealing of implanted specimens, it is found that the n-type conductivity induced by implantation damage is gradually reduced with the increase of annealing temperature until a minimum appears around 350 °C, and then increases again. An enhancement of n-type conductivity can be further observed from annealing under a reduced pressure of mercury. A similar result is also obtained from the annealing of implanted specimens using a HgTe compound as the mercury reservoir instead of liquid mercury. The results suggest that the implanted borons become activated dopants after annealing at high temperature. A mechanism on the activation of boron in HgCdTe is thus proposed, and the experimental results can be satisfactorily explained by the mechanism.

Notes: Abstract A stochastic finite element method (SFEM) is developed for accurate structural reliability analysis. Using the second-order three-moment reliability analytical model, this method takes into account such random factors as load, material parameters and especially geometry randomness. The calculation of the bending fatigue strength reliability of a cantilever beam is carried out as a numerical example to verify the present method. Monte-Carlo FEM and SFEM based on the first-order second-moment model are used in the example to compare with the proposed method. By incorporating the fatigue theory of gears, the present method is then used to analyze the bending fatigue strength reliability of a spur gear. The effects of random variables' coefficient of variation and skewness and the gear's correction factor (not random variable) on the gear's reliability are also investigated.

Notes: Abstract  This paper presents a three-dimensional elasticity solution to the free vibration problem of thick cylindrical shell panels of rectangular planform. The natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes were obtained for thick cylindrical shell panels and detailed parametric investigations were carried out. Comparisons were also made with corresponding finite element simulation results. To validate the accuracy of the results as well as the stability of the present methodology, comprehensive convergence studies were also carried out. Further comparisons of present results were made with existing experimental and numerical results (classical, first-order and higher-order shell theories) available in open literature and the validity and range of applicability of the various shell theories examined.

Notes: Abstract A new integral equation method for the analysis of the interactions between cracks and elastic inclusions embedded in a two-dimensional, linearly elastic, isotropic infinite medium subjected to in-plane force is presented. By distributing dislocations along the crack lines and forces along the matrix-inclusion interfaces, a set of coupled integral equations is obtained. The discretization procedure of the integrals involved is discussed and the relations between the stress intensity factors and the values of the dislocation functions at the respective crack tips are derived. Several sample problems are presented in order to determine the versatility and the accuracy of this approach.

Notes: Abstract An accurate and computationally efficient numerical method is proposed for vibration analysis of thin elliptical plates lying on a circular or an elliptical ring support. A set of orthogonal two-dimensional plate functions generated through the Gram-Schmidt recurrence formula is used as the admissible functions in the Rayleigh-Ritz approach. Natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained by minimizing the functional with respect to the unknown coefficients. Several numerical examples are solved and the obtained results are carefully examined by convergence tests and compared with available results in the literature. Close agreement is achieved in all cases.

Notes: Abstract The crack band and the fictitious crack line models of the fracture process zone in cementitious materials are discussed. The two methods are quite similar. However, the fictitious crack model is shown to lend itself to a simple K-superposition method which makes use of known analytical expressions. This method is shown to give very similar results to a finite-element analysis of the fictitious crack model and has the advantage that it can be programmed for a personal computer. The predictive capability of the fictitious crack model is demonstrated by comparison of the experimental load-deflection curve for a small notch bend mortar specimen with a theoretical curve calculated from data obtained from larger beams. It is suggested that the RILEM test method for the determination of the fracture energy should be used also to establish a bilinear stress-displacement relationship for the strain-softening of the fracture process zone.
