In:  Supplement to: Grinberg, Konstantin V; Kuptsov, Vladimir M; Liskin, V A; Sitnikov, Leonid S (1984): Automation of radiometric measurements in nuclear oceanography. Oceanology, 24(5), 637-641
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: An automated system is described for collecting and processing information from radiometric devices used in determination of isotopic age and sedimentation rate by radiocarbon and lead-210 methods. The system is used in a day-and-night continuous measuring mode, with six radiocarbon liquid counters and two low-background beta-counters. Examples are given of use of the system to determine average sedimentation rates in the Baltic Sea.

In:  Supplement to: Kuptsov, Vladimir M; Palkina, Alla M (1987): Rates of sediment accumulation in deep-water depressions of the Red Sea rift zone. Oceanology, 27(5), 591-597
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Sedimentation rates (SR) for metalliferous and ore sediments containing ore material in 15 depressions of the Red Sea rift zone are discussed. SR for normal sediments was ca. 3.2 cm/ka in the second half of Holocene, 14.3 cm/ka yrs in the first half of Holocene, and 21.3 cm/ka in Late Würmian. Accumulation of metalliferous and ore sediments requires considerable accumulation of hydrothermal matter. Ore sediments have been found primarily in the Atlantis II and Chain Deeps; average sedimentation rate in these depressions is 90.0 cm/ka. In other depressions geothermal activity during considered time intervals was lower, and ore material occurs as admixture or in layers.

In:  Supplement to: Vlasova, Irina E; Kuptsov, Vladimir M (1994): New data on growth rates of Eastern South Pacific ferromanganese nodules. Oceanology, 34(1), 104-111
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Growth rates of nine ferromanganese nodules collected from the Southeast Pacific were estimated using the alpha radiogpaphic technigue. Growth rates range from 1 to 16 mm per million years. In three nodules measurements were made on two opposite sides; two of them showed no growth in one of measured directions during the last 300 ky, whereas in the third nodule growth rates on the opposite sides differ by factor 2. Average sedimentation rate of deposits underlying the nodules estimated by the radiocarbon and excess 230Th methods, were 4 mm/1000 years with rather minor variations. Difference between sedimentation rates and nodule growth rates is caused by activity of benthic fauna, as suggested by inversion of radiocarbon dates with depth.

In:  Supplement to: Kuptsov, Vladimir M; Lisitzin, Alexander P (2003): Holocene sedimentation in the Ob Guba (Bay) and the adjacent shelf zone. Translated from Oceanology, 2003, 43(2), 254-261, Oceanology, 43(2), 240-246
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Complex geological-geochemical studies of water column and bottom sediments were carried out during Cruise 49 of R/V "Dmitry Mendeleev" in the Kara Sea shelf zone along the Obskaya Guba (Ob River estuary) from the Pur River and Taz River mouths to 76°N. Carbon-14 concentrations in organic matter from bottom sediments were determined at 5 stations. Constant initial 14C concentration model was used to determine sedimentation rates that were taken as a basis for calculating ages of sediment cores and their separate parts and for inferring location of a depocenter, i.e. a region of maximal discharge of fine-dispersed fraction of suspended matter of river run-off. Sedimentation rate in the depocenter is 170 cm/ka. Southward moves of the depocenter were recorded for periods of sea-level rises 2 and 5 thousand years ago. Bottom sediments in the depocenter contain 45% of organic matter primary produced in the Obskaya Guba. This organic matter is an energetic basis for bottom fauna life. About 55% of organic matter comes with river run-off.

In:  Supplement to: Grakova, Irina V; Kuptsov, Vladimir M (1978): Radiocarbon dating of ocean sediments aboard ship. Oceanology, 18(5), 618-620
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Procedures for radiocarbon dating of ocean sediments on board the ship using the benzene variant of the method are described. The main features of the benzene synthesis scheme, together with its differences from the method usually used onshore laboratories, are discussed briefly. Parameters of radiometric installation, in which activity of synthesized benzenes is determined are cited. The method was used successfully during Cruise 14 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev (45 datings) and Cruise 24 of R/V Akademik Kurchatov (81 datings).

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Bottom sediment samples were collected in the Central Mediterranean, Southern Adriatic, Tyrrhenian, Algerian-Provencal, and Alboran basins of the Mediterranean Sea. Fifty-six datings were done for 12 sediment cores. The lowest sedimentation rates during Holocene were found on the abyssal plain of the Algerian-Provencal basin (2.4-4.0 cm/ky). In the Southern Adriatic, Tyrrhenian, and Alboran basins sedimentation rates were somewhat higher (6-12 cm/ky). On slopes of the Southern Adriatic and Tyrrhenian basins during Late Würm glaciation rates of "normal" sedimentation were within the range 11.8-26.8 cm/ky.

In:  Supplement to: Kuptsov, Vladimir M; Palkina, Alla M (1986): Radiocarbon dating of bottom sediments of the Red Sea. Oceanology, 26(3), 341-345
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Results of radiocarbon dating of 23 cores (81 determinations) collected in the Red Sea rift zone at 8°N are presented. All of the main tectonic structures were dated: the upper and lower tectonic benches, the salt scarp, and the axial zone. Sediments in the upper tectonic bench exhibit normal sedimentation, while all other structures, which have highly dissected relief, show extensive re-deposition or non-accumulation of sediments. Sedimentation rate in Holocene was from two to three times lower than in Late Würm.
