    Abstract: This open access book discusses the impact of human-induced global climate change on the Indian subcontinent and regional monsoon, the adjoining Indian Ocean and the Himalayas. It also examines the regional climate change projections based on the climate models used by the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) and national climate change modeling studies using the IITM Earth System Model (ESM) and CORDEX South Asia datasets. The IPCC assessment reports, published every 6–7 years, provide important reference material for major policy decisions on climate change, adaptation, and mitigation. While the IPCC assessment reports largely provide a global perspective on climate change, they offer limited information on the regional aspects of climate change. Regional climate change effects over the Indian subcontinent, especially relating to the Indian monsoon, are unique to the region, and in particular, the climate in this region is shaped by the Himalayas, Western Ghats, the Tibetan Plateau, the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and Bay of Bengal. Climatic variations in this region are influenced by (a) regional-scale interactions between the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, cryosphere and biosphere on different time scales, (b) remote effects from natural phenomena such as the El Nino / Southern Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, Indian Ocean Dipole, and Madden Julian Oscillation, and (c) human-induced climate change. This book presents policy-relevant information based on robust scientific analysis and assessments of the observed and projected future climate change over the Indian region.

    Description: Concerns about the regional impact of global climate change in a warming scenario have highlighted the gaps in our understanding of the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM, also referred to as the Indian Ocean summer monsoon) and the absence of long term palaeoclimate data from the central Indian core monsoon zone (CMZ). Here we present the first high resolution, well-dated, multiproxy reconstruction of Holocene palaeoclimate from a 10 m long sediment core raised from the Lonar Lake in central India. We show that while the early Holocene onset of intensified monsoon in the CMZ is similar to that reported from other ISM records, the Lonar data shows two prolonged droughts (PD, multidecadal to centennial periods of weaker monsoon) between 4.6–3.9 and 2–0.6 cal ka. A comparison of our record with available data from other ISM influenced sites shows that the impact of these PD was observed in varying degrees throughout the ISM realm and coincides with intervals of higher solar irradiance. We demonstrate that (i) the regional warming in the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) plays an important role in causing ISM PD through changes in meridional overturning circulation and position of the anomalous Walker cell; (ii) the long term influence of conditions like El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the ISM began only ca. 2 cal ka BP and is coincident with the warming of the southern IPWP; (iii) the first settlements in central India coincided with the onset of the first PD and agricultural populations flourished between the two PD, highlighting the significance of natural climate variability and PD as major environmental factors affecting human settlements.

    Notes: Abstract Polar Kerr rotation (PKR) spectra in the range 2.0–5.7 eV at 295 K of lithium ferrite and yttrium iron garnet (YIG) single crystals are reported. The spectra show more details and cover a more extended energy region than those published so far. The interpretation of the spectra is based on the assumptions that 1) PKR is an odd function of the sublattice magnetic moments 2) the origin of PKR in both compounds is of similar nature, the differences due to the different crystal structures (garnet and spinel) being less important. The calculated PKR sublattice components show some similarities in their energy dependences, the magnitude of the tetrahedral sublattice component being higher than that of the octahedral one. The components were used in the calculation of the PKR spectra in diamagnetically substituted yttrium iron garnet (J. Appl. Phys.49, 2212, 1978). The results correctly predict the trends observed experimentally.

    Notes: Abstract Spin waves which are characteristic of periodic structures of thin ferromagnetic Co films alternating with nonmagnetic Nb films have been investigated by means of Brillouin light scattering. The dependence of the magnon frequencies on the magnetic inplane field and on the wave-vector was measured for several samples with different numbers and thicknesses of the layers. The experimental data are in good agreement with a theory of magnetostatic surface spin waves in such media elaborated by Grünberg and Mika. The amplitudes of the transverse magnetization in the different layers of the stack have been calculated. The highest frequency branch resembles the Damon-Eshbach surface magnon. With decreasing frequency the branches acquire volume mode character. In addition, a number of phonon branches has been observed which are interpreted as plate modes of the combined Co-Nb layer on the Si substrate.

    Notes: The Ser195Ala mutant of human α-thrombin was complexed with fibrinopeptide A(7–22) (FPA) in an effort to describe the (P1′–P6′) post-cleavage binding subsites of the fibrinogen-recognition exosite and define more clearly the nature of the Michaelis complex and the scissile peptide bond bound at the catalytic site. The thrombin mutant, however, has residual catalytic activity and proteolysis occurred at the Arg16–Gly17 bond. Thus, the structure of the thrombin complex determined was that of FPA(7–16) bound at the active site, which is very similar to the ternary FPA(7–16)cmk–human thrombin–hirugen complex (r.m.s.d. ∼ 0.4 Å; Stubbs et al., 1992). It is further shown by subsidiary experiments that the cleavage is the result of residual catalytic activity of the altered catalytic machinery.
