Notizen: A novel and unique principle for generating spatial solitons is presented, which is based on a balance between the diffusion of carriers and their nonlinear velocity-field characteristic in a compound semiconductor such as GaAs. In striking contrast to conventional solitons for electromagnetic radiation, the present soliton is supported solely by the longitudinal electric field. The soliton parameters such as the peak amplitude and the beam width can be controlled with varying the concentration of ionized donors. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A novel principle of waveguides for microwave transmission is proposed, which is based on drift and diffusion of carriers (electrons) in a semiconductor slab bounded by isotype homojunctions. In striking contrast to usual waveguides for electromagnetic radiation, the present waveguides support only the longitudinal electric field. The effective dielectric constant is proportional to the concentration of ionized donors. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A theoretical formulation of electron pulse propagation in quantum wire structures with mesoscopic scale cross sections is presented, assuming quantum ballistic transport of electron wave packets over a certain characteristic length. As typical mesoscopic structures for realizing coherent electron transmission, two traveling-wave configurations are considered: straight quantum wire waveguides and quantum wire bend structures (quantum whispering galleries). To estimate temporal features of the pulse during propagation, the walk off, the dispersion, and the pulse coherence lengths are defined as useful characteristic lengths. Numerical results are shown for ultrashort pulse propagation through rectangular wire waveguides. Effects due to an external electric field are discussed as well.

Notizen: A novel physical concept termed "spatiotemporal mode'' is presented for ultrashort optical pulse-beam propagation in a saturable Kerr-law nonlinear medium. The mathematical structure of the mode with spherical symmetry is described analytically. Dispersion characteristics are calculated and compared with those of the conventional spatial modes in planar and cylindrical dielectric waveguides. Nonvanishing cutoff frequency is obtained even for the fundamental mode.

Notizen: A useful wave-optics solution is derived for the Cerenkov mode calculation of optical third-harmonic signals that are generated in a multilayer planar optical waveguide. With this modal solution, the ultimate performance of the planar-configuration frequency tripler, being phase matched in the form of coherent Cerenkov radiation, is predictable. Numerical results are shown for the third-harmonic ultraviolet light generation in a planar glass waveguide loaded by a polydiacetylene Langmuir–Blodgett deposited thin film. Furthermore, the possibility of pronounced activation of the third-harmonic radiation from a glass waveguide pumped by an intense laser beam is suggested through field calculations based on a laser-induced damage model. In addition, loss analysis that includes both one- and two-photon absorptions is made by means of a phenomenological propagation model using coupled rate equations.

Notizen: An efficient computational approach based on the path integral concept is described to solve nonlinear pulse propagation dynamics in realistic optical fibers. As model equations which can predict the propagation, we consider the perturbed (scalar) and the coupled (vectorial) nonlinear Schrödinger equations for monomode and birefringent fibers, respectively. With the equivalence between path integration and Fresnel transform, an efficient algorithm can be employed which has been developed for use in the field of wave signal processing of holographic data. After ensuring the validity of the method through the application to canonical soliton problems, results are shown for nonlinear pulse propagation under realistic conditions.

Notizen: A three-dimensional calculation of Cherenkov-type frequency doubling in an optical channel waveguide is implemented by slicing the lateral profile of the interacting fields into a number of small segments. In each segment, lateral field variations of the harmonic signal are neglected. This method is more simple and requires less computational effort in comparison with a direct three-dimensional beam simulation. With the unidirectional-radiation model one can predict an optimum configuration and the conversion efficiency of miniaturized frequency doublers that utilize guided–to–radiation-mode interactions in nonlinear channel waveguides. Typical results are shown for blue-light generation through frequency doubling in a proton-exchanged MgO-doped lithium niobate channel waveguide. Analyses of green-light generation in organic channel waveguides are reported as well.

Notizen: We present a mode field analysis of the second-harmonic electromagnetic wave that radiates from a nonlinear core bounded by a dielectric cladding. With this analysis the ultimate performance of the organic crystal-cored single-mode optical fiber waveguide as a guided-wave frequency doubler is evaluated through the solution of nonlinear parametric equations derived from Maxwell's equations under some assumptions. As a phase-matching scheme we consider a Cerenkov approach because of advantages in actual device applications, in which the phase matching is achievable between the fundamental guided LP01 mode and the second-harmonic radiation (leaky) mode. Calculated results for organic cores made of benzil, 4-(N, N-dimethyl-amino)-3-acetamidonitrobenzen, 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline, and 4'-nitrobenzilidene-3-acetoamino-4-metxianiline provide useful data for designing an efficient fiber-optic wavelength converter utilizing nonlinear parametric processes. A detailed comparison is made between results for infinite and finite cladding thicknesses.

Notizen: Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) that propagate along a bent dielectric waveguide with two-dimensional field confinement are analyzed with a self consistent field approximation (weighted index theory). WGMs are quasi-modes (leaky modes) with their field shape distorted toward the outermost boundary of a bend. Numerical results are shown for the modes in an optical embedded channel waveguide whose center of curvature is on an arbitrary location. Calculation of the leakage loss is included as well.
