Abstract We study the effect of structural changes on the strength of two grades of teflon (F4 and F4D) and their susceptibility to swelling under the influence of liquid media. It is shown that nonuniform stress distribution in these materials promotes the onset of selective action of liquid media, whose effect on the physical and mechanical properties of teflon depends on the relative proportions of the crystalline and amorphous phases and on the stress state of the material.
