    Description: The genus Protatlanta is thought to be monotypic and is part of the Atlantidae, a family of shelled heteropods. These microscopic planktonic gastropods are poorly known, although research on their ecology is now increasing in response to concerns about the effects of ocean acidification on calcareous plankton. A correctly implemented taxonomy of the Atlantidae is fundamental to this progressing field of research and it requires much attention, particularly using integrated molecular and morphological techniques. Here we use DNA barcoding, shell morphology and biogeography to show that the genus Protatlanta includes at least two valid species in the Atlantic Ocean. Protatlanta souleyeti and Protatlanta sculpta were found to be separate species, with different shell morphology and separated by a K2P genetic distance of 19% sequence divergence at the Cytochrome Oxidase 1 gene. This evidence supports the revival of the species name P. sculpta, which was described by Issel in 1911, but has not been recognised as a valid species since 1915.

    Notes: Mn-Bi-Al thin films were produced by sequential evaporation of the constituents, followed by an anneal at 300 °C. The temperature and composition dependencies of the Kerr rotation angle, absolute reflectivity, and magnetic anisotropy were measured. The results show that, up to 30 at. % Al concentration, the thin films retain the pure MnBi hexagonal structure. Further, for suitable Al content, the films have the same large Kerr rotation as MnBi. Pure MnBi films exhibit perpendicular anisotropy at room temperature and in-plane anisotropy for temperatures below 142 K. In contrast, the Al-doped films prepared here have perpendicular anisotropy down to at least 85 K. The increased coercivities of the Al-doped films are attributed to the occupation of grain-boundary and interstitial sites of the NiAs-type hexagonal structure by the Al atoms.

    Notes: (Co 3 A(ring)/Pt 10 A(ring))×N (N=8, 16, and 30 bilayers) multilayer thin films were prepared by sputtering onto an 850-A(ring)-thick SiN layer that had been deposited on a silicon (111) substrate. We used the polar Kerr effect to measure the time dependence of magnetization reversal over the temperature range 90–300 K. Direct domain observations were also carried out. The results show that the domain expansion process depends strongly on the number of bilayers. Uniform domain expansion was found only in the thinner samples. From the time dependence of the magnetization reversal measurements over the temperature range 90–300 K, the activation energy and volume associated with domain wall motion were found to be 1.2 eV and 2.3×10−18 cm3 for N=8 sample. The N=16 and N=30 samples seem to have a broad distribution of activation energies. Our observations suggest that both the coercivity and magnetization reversal are controlled by the defects that come from the interface between the Co and Pt.

    Notes: Amorphous Dy/Co multilayers with the individual layer thickness between 4 and 10 A(ring) in steps of 0.5 to 1 A(ring) were studied systematically over the temperature range 100–300 K. The Kerr rotation increases as temperature decreases, or as Co content increases and the coercivity increases both in the low temperature region and in the vicinity of the compensation point. These characteristics were analyzed in terms of simple models of the magnetic structure and magnetization reversal.

    Notes: Magnetization reversal of Co/Cr multilayer films is studied by utilizing initial magnetization curves, minor loops, isothermal and dc demagnetization remanence curves, and temperature dependence of the loops. Electron microscope observations reveal that the films consist of columnar grains of size from 400 to 800 A(ring). It is suggested that the magnetization reversal is dominated by rotation of single-domain grains. Numerical calculations are performed based on the Stoner–Wohlfarth coherent rotation model for noninteracting, single-domain particles of uniaxial anisotropy. The calculated results agree qualitatively with the experimental results. To investigate the quantitative differences, magnetic interactions among the grains are measured in terms of deviations from the linear Hankel plot predicted by Wohlfarth.

    Notes: Starting from an exact quantum-statistical description, the influence of the shape of the energy landscape on the magnetic viscosity is investigated. Magnetic phase-space analysis based on Kramers' escape-rate theory of chemical reaction kinetics theory shows that the activation entropy associated with thermally activated hopping modifies the magnetic viscosity by reducing the attempt-frequency prefactor compared to an earlier prediction by Brown [W. F. Brown, Phys. Rev. 130, 1677 (1963)]. Energetic contributions are analyzed in terms of a model applicable to a range of coherent and noncoherent magnetization processes, and in the long-time limit deviations from the linear logarithmic magnetic-viscosity law are found. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this study, we showed that a magnetic coercivity (Hc) as high as 37 kOe was obtained in a CoPt thin film that contains separated nanometer-size CoPt crystallites. We prepared CoPt thin films with thicknesses of 5 and 175 nm by magnetron sputtering. After annealing in an Ar/H2 atmosphere at temperatures from 650 to 750 °C for 3–12 h, we measured the magnetic properties and found that magnetic Hc relates to annealing temperature, annealing time and film thickness. From atomic force microscopy and magnetic force microscopy studies, the magnetic single domain size of CoPt is in the range of 100–200 nm. The high Hc is likely due to the well-separated nanometer-size crystallites and the well-ordered fct phase of CoPt alloy. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
