    Notes: Abstract The effects of body size and suspension density on filtration rates, assimilation efficiencies and respiration rates in the ribbed musselAulacomya ater (Molina) have been determined by means of short-term laboratory experiments. Filtration rates accelerate rapidly in response to increasing algal concentration up to approximately 10×106 cellsDunaliella primolecta l-1, beyond which a plateau is approached. Percentage increments are greatest in small individuals. Assimilation efficiencies are independent of body size, but decline rapidly with increasing ration to approach zero above 32×106 cells l-1. Increases in respiration rate accompany increments in filtration rate in all but the smallest size class tested. Filtration, assimilation efficiency and respiration measurements are used to calculate ingestion rations, assimilation rations and scope for growth for mussels of different sizes over a range of algal concentrations. Scope for growth, expressed as percentage change in body energy per day, is a declining function of body size, but larger individuals achieve their maximum growth rates at lower ration levels than smaller ones. Growth efficiency is independent of body size, and is maximal at 5×106 cells l-1, where 29 to 43% of ingested ration is converted into body energy. The applicability of these experimental results to natural ecosystems is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Length/weight relationships have been computed for shell, flesh and byssus ofAulacomya ater (Molina) and energy values used to convert the weights to energy equivalents. Shell accounts for some 26% of total body energy, while the contribution of the byssus declines from 15 to 8% during growth. Observations of juvenile growth rates have been used to generate a Gompertz growth equation which predicts attainment of maximum length (90 mm) after 11 years. Reproductive condition has been assessed by monitoring seasonal fluctuations in the flesh weight of standard-sized individuals, calculated from monthly length/weight regressions. There appear to be three spawnings, of variable date and intensity, each year. From the above data, annual energy expenditure on growth and gonad output has been calculated for individuals of various sizes. The ratio of total production to biomass $$(P:\bar B)$$ is a declining clining function of shell length, dropping from 29.5 at 5 mm to 0.8 at 85 mm. The proportion of total production expended on gamete output increases steadily from 25% at attainment of maturity (15 mm) to 81% at 85 mm length. The considerable effects of changing size composition on the amount and type of production in natural populations are discussed.

    Notes: The spectrum of bound states of He atoms adsorbed on Ag(110) is calculated, using an interaction potential based on effective medium theory EMT for the repulsive term A exp(−bz) and the Zaremba–Kohn form for the attractive van der Waals dispersion term. The electronic charge density of the host in the selvedge region is modeled by superimposing atomic-charge densities using the Herman–Skillman tables and the prefactor A of the repulsive term is fitted to the exact ground state energy obtained from elastic He scattering data. Comparisons are made with the bound-state spectrum extracted from the measured resonances in the He scattering data and with the results of several other models used in the current literature. An assessment of the role played by higher-order dispersion contributions to the attractive potential is also included. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. The soil of a restored opencast site in Northumberland is described and compared with the surrounding undisturbed soil. The most serious change in the soil was increased bulk density at the surface of the subsoil (0.3 m depth). Only a small overall reduction in pore space occurred, at the expense of continuous macropores. More of the pore space in the restored soil occurred as fine fissures as opposed to biotic channels, and the restored soil was weaker because of subsoiling and a loss of stability in microstructures. These changes are discussed in relation to root exploration, water movement and land management.

    Notes: The effects of drainage on the yield of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) swards grown for silage, and on soil development under grassland, were studied between 1982 and 1985.Over the 4 years of the experiment, drainage resulted in a mean increase in herbage production of 1-5 t dry matter (DM) ha−1, 16% above the yield recorded on the undrained site. Drainage also led to increased herbage nitrogen contents at every cut except one, so that total nitrogen recovery was increased by an average of 24-8 kg N ha−1 (15%) when drainage was installed. These total differences were mainly due to differences that were present at the first cut taken in June each year; drainage led to an average 24% increase in yield, and an average 27% increase in nitrogen recovery at the first cut.Detailed sward measurements taken in 1985 endeavoured to explain these differences; drainage increased depth to free water over winter, enabling increased root efficiency and nitrogen availability, greater tillering and more rapid leaf extension in early spring. There was some suggestion that drainage also led to an improved topsoil structure in terms of improved aggregation and aeration. This is important for long-term soil development as well as short-term herbage yield.

    Notes: Four commonly used diagnostic tests [reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT), virus culture and light microscopy] were evaluated for their ability to detect infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV) or tissue pathology following experimental infection of Atlantic salmon. Fish were infected with ISAV by water-borne exposure which mimics the route of natural infection. Forty-five per cent of pre-clinical fish tested yielded positive results by RT-PCR for at least one of the organs tested (kidney, heart, gill, liver, blood). No significant difference was detected between organs in the number or time of first occurrence of positive result. Virus culture identified a total of 14% of pre-clinical fish as ISAV-infected. The presence of ISAV in heart tissue was particularly notable (13% of fish sampled) as was the inability to culture virus from spleen tissue. In the case of IFAT, 15% of fish sampled were positive, although tissue other than kidney proved unsuitable for use in this method. Only limited ISAV-specific pathology was detectable by histological examination of fish prior to the onset of clinical disease. These findings reveal important information regarding the optimal choice of both tissue sample and diagnostic test for the routine diagnosis of ISAV.
