    Notizen: The density of oxide core in (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3OxAg sheathed tape was estimated from Vickers hardness and found to be increased to as high as 93% of the theoretical density with increasing the degree of cold working. During heat treatment, this densification before heat treatment promoted the formation of a strong linked microstructure which is characterized by dense microstructure, a high degree of orientation of oxide crystal and smooth interface between the Ag sheath and oxide core. Consequently, we obtained high values of critical current density: 66 000 A/cm2 at 0 T and 14 500 A/cm2 at 1 T for 77 K.

    Notizen: In the case of Bi-2212/Ag composite tapes, the partial-melting technique is useful to obtain a highly textured microstructure. The liquid phase plays an important role during this process. In this letter, we studied the phase transition of oxide phases in the Bi-2212/Ag composite tapes during partial melting and solidification by using the high-temperature x-ray diffraction technique. In the partially molten state, the liquid phase coexists with various kinds of (Ca,Sr)-Cu oxides whose Cu content decreases with increasing temperature. The Bi-2212 phase forms directly from the coexistent state of the liquid phase and the (Ca,Sr)2CuO3 compound. c-axis alignment of Bi-2212 phase starts subsequently to the beginning of precipitation. Bi-2212 phase decomposes and the Bi-2201 phase appears below 800 °C. At lower temperature, the Bi-2201 phase is more stable than Bi-2212 phase and can easily form in the super-cooled liquid phase.

    Notizen: Flicker noise measurements for n-metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors have been carried out under a wide range of bias conditions. The experiments show excess noise over an ideal 1/f noise spectrum at around 1–10 kHz frequency range, which is independent of the drain voltage. The origin of the additional noise is the Shockley–Read–Hall generation–recombination process occurring near the drain in the channel. Monte Carlo device simulations confirmed the excess noise origin as well as the observed reduction of its magnitude with increasing gate voltage. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A method is presented for fitting a piecewise cubic polynomial to a sequence of geomagnetic data which contains oscillations such as Pi2 pulsations superposed on rapid background changes such as bay-type disturbances. The first step of smoothing is performed by a one-pass method with a piecewise cubic polynomial where the polynomial pieces are calculated as the data is scanned only once from left to right. The knots of the approximating piecewise cubic polynomial are determined successively using a modified Powell criterion which has a free parameter μ determining the degree of smoothing. As μ grows large, the approximating function becomes smoother and the oscillations with longer periods can be separated (μ= 1 corresponds to the original Powell criterion). If a rapid background change needs to be preserved in the smoothed data, the sum of squares of residuals is locally minimized in the neighbourhood of the rapid change as the second step. The proposed method which involves two steps is capable of separating the oscillations from the rapid background changes. Some examples of good separation are displayed.

    Notizen: This paper deals with the effect of anisotropy on fracture processes of a directionally solidified superalloy, Mar-M247, under a push–pull creep-fatigue condition at high-temperature. Three kinds of specimen were cut from a cast plate such that their axes possess angles of 0°, 45° and 90° with respect to the 〈001〉 orientation that is aligned parallel to the solidification direction (also to the grain boundaries and primary dendrite axis); these specimens being denoted the 0° specimen, the 45° specimen, and the 90° specimen, respectively. The tests were conducted at 1273 K (1000 °C) in air under equal magnitudes of the range of a ΔJ-related parameter, ΔWc , which represents the driving force for crack growth in creep-fatigue. Although the grain boundaries are macroscopically parallel to the solidification direction, they are wavy or serrated microscopically. Small cracks nucleate along parts of the grain boundaries perpendicular to the stress axis in all specimens. The 90° specimen has the shortest crack initiation life and the 0° specimen has the longest. In the 90° and 45° specimens, intergranular cracks continue to nucleate and a main crack is formed along the grain boundary due to the frequent coalescence of small cracks. In the 0° specimen, cracks grow into the grain, and transgranular cracks coalesce along the primary dendrite or grain boundary. The 0° specimen exhibits the slowest crack growth rate and the 90° specimen the fastest. These differences in the initiation and growth behaviour of small cracks cause the longest failure life in the 0° specimen and the shortest in the 90° specimen.

    Notizen: In order to investigate the characteristic slip behaviour near a grain boundary in high-cycle fatigue, a high-cycle fatigue test is carried out using a copper poly-crystal specimen, which consists of several tens of grains. Seventeen persistent slip bands (PSBs) are observed along the grain boundaries. Their location and the activated slip system are different from those expected by the Schmid factor. After the fatigue test, the crystalline orientation and the three-dimensional shape of each grain are specified by the repetition of polishing and observation by means of an orientation-imaging microscope (OIM). A finite-element method (FEM) analysis is also conducted for the specimen with the same orientation and shape of grains taking into account the anisotropy. This analysis reveals that the shear stress concentrates near the grain boundaries where the PSBs are formed. The activated slip systems predicted by the maximum resolved shear stress agree well with those observed in the fatigue experiment. Thus, the characteristic slip near the grain boundary in the poly-crystal is governed by the concentrated resolved shear stress on the specific slip system due to the deformation constraint by neighbouring crystals.
