Notes: Summary The fundamental nutritional requirements of one strain ofGymnoascus reessii were established. Growth was measured on a dry weight basis. The optimum medium for growth consisted of 5% maltose, 2% KNO3, 0.2% K2HPO4, 0.2% MgSO4.7H2O, 1 mg% adenine, 1 mg% uracil, 1 mg% guanine, 5 mg% xanthine, 0.8 mg% biotin and 0.2 mg% pyridoxine. An initial Ph range of 5.0–8.0 was found to permit optimum growth.

Notes: Summary The effect of addition of varying concentrations of certain inorganic compounds in selected media upon growth and pigment elaboration ofEidamella deflexa (Berk.)Benjamin was studied in submerged culture. Preliminary experiments were performed to establish approximate optimum ranges of certain inorganic compounds. Further investigations in a glycine-sucrose basal medium indicated that the following range of concentrations stimulated growth to the greatest extent: 0.2% MgSO4·7H2O, 0.2% K2HPO4, 0.25 mg% CuSO4·5H2O, 0,0% ZnSO4·7H2O and 10.0 mg % FeSO4·7H2O. The degree of pigment production did not seem to be affected by different concentrations of these compounds. The effects of additional molybdenum and zinc upon growth and pigmentation were studied in the following media: lactose-peptone, lactose-glycine, maltose-peptone and maltose-glycine. Molybdenum increased pigmentation slightly in maltose-glycine and maltose-peptone media, but inhibited the amount of growth. Molybdenum decreased both growth and pigmentation in the two lactose media. Zinc had little affect on either growth or pigment elaboration in the two maltose media. However, in the lactose-glycine medium, zinc decreased both growth and pigmentation while in lactose-peptone media zinc slightly increased growth and pigmentation.

Notes: Summary The genusGymnoascus Baranetzky is monographed and found to include five valid species including one previously recognized species,G. reessii, one new combination,G. johnstoni, two new species,G. longitrichus andG. corniculatus, and a species originally described as aGymnoascus but included inMyxotrichum since 1893,G. uncinatus. Twenty species previously described as belonging toGymnoascus are excluded from the genus or are considered as doubtful representatives.

Notes: Summary The genusAmauroascus, with two species,A. verrucosus andA. niger, is reviewed historically and authentic herbarium material is cited. The characteristics of pure cultures for the two species are given for the first time. Data are given in support of placingAmauroascus in synonymy withArachniotus.

Notes: Summary The rate of utilization byEidamella deflexa of non-protein nitrogen and dextrose equivalent (reducing sugar) was investigated in each of two media, and compared with rates of growth and pigment elaboration. In a glycine-maltose basal medium the depletion curves for nitrogen and D.E. followed a similar pattern, with the lowest point on the curves corresponding to the period of maximum production of cellular material. With autolysis of cells there was a definite increase in D.E. and a slight increase in amino nitrogen in the medium. In a peptone-sucrose medium both D.E. and amino nitrogen were removed from the medium at a more or less similar and constant rate, but the final amount of each remaining in the medium after eleven days was considerably less than that in the glycinemaltose medium although the latter medium permitted greater growth and pigment elaboration. There seemed to be no correlation between rates of utilization of nitrogen and sugar and the period of maximum growth in the sucrose-peptone medium. In neither medium was there an apparent relation between the rate of onset of pigment production and the rate of utilization of nitrogen and sugar.

Notes: Summary A taxonomic study was made of morphological variability in several cultures ofGymnoascus reessii isolated from dung and soil, mostly in California. There is considerable variation among isolates of this species with regard to cultural and ascocarp characters such as the nature of the free apices of the peridial hyphae. Ascospore characters are quite stable. Although certain isolates possibly could be grouped into varieties, such groupings merge into one another. Hence, at this time it appears that varieties ofG. reessii cannot readily be distinguished. The single heretofore described variety,G. reessii var.deilephilae Hennings, is reduced to synonymy withG. reessii Baran.

Notes: Summary A new genus of the Gymnoascaceae is described and illustrated. A single species,Petalosporus nodulosus, is described. Four isolates representing this new species were isolated from dung in India and California. Morphological development and other diagnostic characteristics are given. The new genus is characterized by the formation of a discrete but often fragmentary ascocarp the peridium of which undergoes partial disarticulation at maturity. At least some of the peridial hyphae have thick walls and are enlarged at septal nodes, and these septa are also the points of disarticulation. A primary generic character is the floral-shaped pattern in which ascospores are found.

Notes: Summary The type specimen ofGymnoascus verticillatus Smith was studied and is described as the type of a new, monotypic genus,Actinodendron. The new genus is characterized by the formation of brown to dark colored ascocarps bearing brown appendages with verticels of short branchlets. Ascospores ofA. verticillatum (Smith)Orr &Kuehn are pale brown and almost discoid. Additional specimens of this species are reported.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents This paper claculates the current in a series connection of an ohmic resistance and an iron-core coil caused by sinusoidal voltage. The same circuit is used as a model for the approximation choosing, however, a square-wave pulse sequence voltage supply. Thus, chances for correct integration are provided allowing to develop approximation formulae on a reliable basis.
