Notes:
Summary Studies have been made of the interaction of a number of ionic surfactants with human red blood cells in order to measure the rate at which the surfactant brings about rupture of the red cells and the enthalpy change associated with rupture. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the primary function of the surfactant is to penetrate a lipid monolayer and bring about its collapse. Enthalpy changes associated with hemolysis are estimated to lie in the region −2×104 to −5×104 Joules per mole of surfactant.
