    Notes: A model of herbage growth and nitrogen dynamics for grazed pasture was developed. Grazed herbage nitrogen is partitioned between animal growth, urine and faeces. After allowing for ammonia volatilization, the rate and area covered by urinary nitrogen is simulated. The fate of each day's urinary nitrogen deposition is followed separately through time. The mineral nitrogen remaining in the soil at the end of the growing season is assumed to be leached over winter. Leaching from fertilized grass only and unfertilized grass/clover pastures are compared at varying levels of dry matter (DM) production. Biological fixation is assumed to provide sufficient nitrogen to allow the grass/clover pasture to achieve the same seasonal distribution of production as the fertilized grass-only pasture. There was a non-linear increase in predicted leaching with increasing DM production owing to the aggregation of urinary nitrogen into urine patches. Leaching was lower from grass/clover than the grass-only pasture and the difference increased with DM production. At levels of production common in the UK, the difference in leaching between the two pasture types was small and the spatial distribution of soil mineral nitrogen was uneven, so differences in leaching may be small and difficult to detect.

    Notes: An ultrasonic rangefinder (sonic sward stick) was developed for rapidly measuring and recording the undisturbed surface height of swards. HFRO and ultrasonic sward stick measurements of undisturbed sward height over continuously grazed pasture were closely related. The measurements obtained with both instruments were related to the sward mass; the distribution of that mass between leaf, stem and dead material had little effect.

    Notes: Two contrasting decision rules for adjusting stock density to control the sward height of continuously grazed grass swards were tested and developed. One rule calculated the adjustment as a percentage of the existing stock density (Percentage Rule); the other related the adjustment to estimates of the bulk density of the grazed horizon and individual animal intake (Absolute Rule). Both decision rules related the adjustments to the change in sward height over the previous week and to the deviation from the target value. The decision rules were tested by continuously grazing lactating ewes and then dry ewes after weaning with a target sward height of 4 cm on 0·33-ha plots with stock density adjusted by varying animal numbers. The Percentage Rule failed to increase the stock density sufficiently rapidly when grass growth was accelerating, leading to increasing deviation in sward height from a 4 cm target value. The Absolute Rule succeeded in controlling sward height once the bulk density term had been correctly adjusted. Pre-emptive adjustment of stock density in anticipation of a change in grass growth rate marginally improved the control that was achieved by the Absolute Rule.

    Notes: Measurements of undisturbed sward surface height (sward height) were made using the HFRO and sonic sward sticks at 20 cm intervals along 100 m transects laid across paddocks grazed by either sheep, cattle or goats. Measurements of sward height were also made at 5 cm intervals along 10 m transects laid across the same paddocks using the HFRO sward stick alone. The variance of the measurements from each transect was partitioned across the range of spatial scales of roughness present using spectral analysis. The variance of the sward surface height appeared to be dominated by variation with spatial scales of less than 1 to 2 m. The variances of measurements made with the two sward sticks were similar despite the greater sampling area of the sonic sward stick. This was due to the presence of variation at spatial scales much larger than the sampling area of either instrument and to a greater contribution from non-spatially related sources to the variance of the sonic sward stick measurements. The use of weighted disc meters for obtaining the mean height of continuously grazed sward deserves re-examination, while automation of the sonic sward stick may be worthwhile if the spatial distribution of herbage is to be described.

    Notes: Laboratory experimentation found smooth and pubescent leaf surfaces to behave as specular (mirror-like) reflectors of ultrasound, whilst ribbed leaves behaved as an array of reflectors. It was concluded that swards composed of species with smooth, erectophile leaves would reflect ultrasound poorly and that this may explain the low sward height measurements returned by the sonic sward stick in the field when compared with the HFRO sward stick. The likely effect of species with planophile leaves such as clover is discussed. The sward surface influencing a sonic sward stick measurement was calculated to subtend a solid angle of about 43° at the transducer, equivalent to an area of about 1000 cm2 with the transducer mounted at a height of 50 cm. However, measurements made over turves of varying sizes or over turves with cores of varying size removed found the sensitivity decreased very rapidly beyond an inner area subtending a solid angle of about 7° this is equivalent to an area of about 30 cm2.

    Description: Complex dynamic models of carbon and nitrogen are often used to investigate the consequences of climate change on agricultural production and greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. These models require high temporal resolution input data regarding the timing of field operations. This paper describes the Timelines model, which predicts the timelines of key field operations across Europe. The evaluation of the model suggests that it is broadly capable of simulating the timing of field operations for a range of arable crops at different locations. Systematic variations in the date of harvesting and in the timing of the first application of N fertiliser to winter crops need to be corrected and the prediction of soil workability and trafficability might enable the prediction of ploughing and applications of solid manure in preparation for spring crops. The data concerning the thermal time thresholds for sowing and harvesting underlying the model should be updated and extended to a wider range of crops.

    Description: SummaryThe availability to grass of the nitrogen in liquid anaerobically digested sludge (LDS) and liquid aerobic sludge (LAS) was investigated in a 2-year field trial. The mean availability of the nitrogen in the LDS over the 2 years was 44% on a freely drained sandy soil and 34% on a poorly drained clay soil. The corresponding values for the LAS were 56 and 44%. A greater inhibition or organic-matter decomposition by clay particles or a greater loss of nitrogen by either ammonia volatilization or denitrification were all possible reasons for the lower availability of the sludges on the clay soil. Investigation of the magnitude of gaseous losses of nitrogen from sludge-amended grassland under U.K. conditions is required. Current models of the availability of the nitrogen in liquid sludges may not be realistic if these losses are significant.

    Description: Six agricultural landscapes in Poland (PL), the Netherlands (NL), France (FR), Italy (IT), Scotland (UK) and Denmark (DK) were studied, and a common method was developed for undertaking farm inventories and the derivation of farm nitrogen (N) balances and N surplus from the in total 222 farms and 11 440 ha of farmland. In all landscapes, a large variation in the farm N surplus was found, and thereby a large potential for reductions. The highest average N surpluses were found in the most livestock-intensive landscapes of IT, FR, and NL; on average 202 ± 28, 179 ± 63 and 178 ± 20 kg N ha−1yr−1, respectively. However, all landscapes showed hotspots, especially from livestock farms, including a special UK case with landless large-scale poultry farming. So, whereas the average N surplus from the land-based UK farms dominated by extensive sheep grazing was only 31 ± 10 kg N ha−1yr−1, the landscape average was similar to those of PL and DK (122 ± 20 and 146 ± 55 kg N ha−1yr−1, respectively) when landless poultry were included. However, the challenge remains how to account for indirect N surpluses and emissions from such farms with a large export of manure out of the landscape. We conclude that farm N balances are a useful indicator for N losses and the potential for improving N management. Significant correlations to N surplus were found, both with ammonia air concentrations and nitrate levels in soils and groundwater, measured during the landscape data collection campaign from 2007–2009. This indicates that farm N surpluses may be used as an independent dataset for validation of measured and modelled N emissions in agricultural landscapes. However, no significant correlation was found to N measured in surface waters, probably because of the short time horizon of the study. A case study of the development in N surplus from the landscape in DK from 1998–2008 showed a 22 % reduction, related to statistically significant effects (p 〈 0.01) of measures targeted at reducing N emissions from livestock farms. Based on the large differences between the average and the most modern and N-efficient farms, it was concluded that N-surplus reductions of 25–50 % as compared to the present level were realistic in all landscapes. The implemented N-surplus method was thus effective at comparing and synthesizing results on farm N emissions and the potentials of mitigation options, and is recommended for use in combination with other methods for the assessment of landscape N emissions and farm N efficiency, including more detailed N sink and N source hotspot mapping, measurements and modelling.

    Description: Improved management of nitrogen (N) in agriculture is necessary to achieve a sustainable balance between the production of food and other biomass, and the unwanted effects of N on water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity deterioration and human health. To analyse farm N-losses and the complex interactions within farming systems, efficient methods for identifying emissions hotspots and evaluating mitigation measures are therefore needed. The present paper aims to fill this gap at the farm and landscape scales. Six agricultural landscapes in Poland (PL), the Netherlands (NL), France (FR), Italy (IT), Scotland (UK) and Denmark (DK) were studied, and a common method was developed for undertaking farm inventories and the derivation of farm N balances, N surpluses and for evaluating uncertainty for the 222 farms and 11 440 ha of farmland included in the study.
