Summary In order to use radar images for mapping underwater bottom topography, one must know the radar imaging mechanism. The modulation of the sea surface roughness above the bottom topography is here to be described by the weak hydrodynamic interaction theory in the relaxation time approximation. From this knowledge of the radar imaging mechanism, and by application of that theory, it is possible to map the crests of sandbanks and sandwaves. Thereby, one can also infer the wavelengthsλ s of the sandwaves from the radar image. From the orientation (concave, convex) of the sandwaves one can indicate the direction of net sand transport.
