Description / Table of Contents: Summary A buoy with stabilized mast is used for the determination of the vertical eddy transports above the sea. An accuracy of the stabilization of 1° is obtained by servo mechanism and reference to a gyro. The buoy is of small size (1.5m diameter, 4.5 m draught), light weight (700 kg including stabilization unit) and short period of dip motions (1.7 sec). In use, the buoy is connected with a research vessel by floating cables. The system was used in the Baltic with wind strength up to 8 Beaufort. For comparison a tripod is available which provides a fixed point over water of 14 m depth. Some results of determination of stress and heat flux are given. These may be summarized by a drag coefficient ℵ10 = 1.2 · 10-3 and a similarly defined heat transport coefficient of 1·10−3.

Notes: Abstract The theoretical developments yielding the resistance law for the planetary boundary layer are summarized, including the refinements of the ageostrophic method. This leads to the hypothesis that the resistance law for the simple non-stationary, advective boundary layer is obtained from the one for a stationary, horizontally homogeneous boundary layer, if the modulous of the geostrophic wind in the latter is replaced with a generalized frictionless wind in the former. The generalized frictionless wind includes the inertial terms.

Notes: Abstract The effect of spray droplets in the marine surface layer on evaporation is considered. Independent evidence from energy constraints, from visibility and from sea salt content of air is used. The estimation shows that, except perhaps for hurricane wind strength, the increase of total evaporation from evaporating droplets is negligible. This is in agreement with recent experimental evidence.

Notes: Abstract Geostrophic drag coefficients are obtained from direct measurements of the momentum flux and from an objective analysis of the synoptic pressure field by the method of least squares. At a site in the Kiel Bight, a mean geostrophic drag coefficient c g = 0.0223 was obtained with near neutral/ slightly unstable conditions and a surface Rossby Number of 1.2 × 109.

Notes: Abstract Turbulent fluxes have been measured in the atmospheric surface layer from a boom extending upwind from the Dutch offshore research platform Meetpost Noordwijk (MPN) during HEXMAX (Humidity Exchange over the Sea Main Experiment) in October–November, 1986. We started out to study eddy flux of water vapour, but discrepancies among simultaneous measurements made with three different anemometers led us to develop methods to correct eddy correlation measurements of wind stress for flow distortion by nearby objects. We then found excellent agreement among the corrected wind stress data sets from the three anemometers on the MPN boom and with eddy correlation measurements from a mast on a tripod. Inertial-dissipation techniques gave reliable estimates of wind stress from turbulence spectra, both at MPN and at a nearby ship. The data cover a range of wave ages and the results yield new insights into the variation of sea surface wind stress with sea state; two alternative formulas are given for the nondimensional surface roughness as a function of wave age.

Notes: Abstract Turbulence in the Planetary Boundary Layer has been a topic of research for a long time. Its theory, however, is hampered by the fact that we have fewer fundamental equations than unknowns when dealing with turbulent motions. The search for additional “laws” to match the number of equations with the number of unknowns in turbulence theory is commonly labelled the turbulent closure problem. Despite considerable effort, this problem has not been solved. There is a variety of approaches available. However, these have not converged towards a commonly accepted PBL theory, like the Monin-Obukhov similarity for the surface layer. The Working Group on Boundary Layer Dynamics and Air-Sea interaction of ICDM/IAMAP therefore invites the scientific community to discuss these problems and possible solutions. The present paper intends to stimulate such a discussion.
