    Notizen: The continued growth of the Chinese economy accompanied with the expansion of international investment in China has led to an increase in foreign research and development (R&D) activities in the country. Aside from the rising importance of R&D internationalization, research on foreign R&D in China has been neglected in the past due to its emerging status. In this article we examine drivers and barriers for conducting R&D in China. The focus of our research is on transnational companies typically characterized by decentralized R&D activities. Our research is mainly based on qualitative interviews with senior R&D managers. The success of foreign R&D activities in China strongly depends on the realistic estimation of its advantages and the proper identification and handling of barriers.

    Notizen: The effect of pre-treatment on the microstructure and critical current of (Bi,Pb)-2223/Ag tapeshas been investigated. Experimental results show that pre-treatment has important influences on theformation and the grain size of the (Bi,Pb)-2223 phase as well as the performances of Bi-2223/Ag tapes.During the pre-treatment process, the decomposition of the 3321 phase enhances the growth of(Bi,Pb)-2212 grains, which promotes the formation of (Bi,Pb)-2223 phase because it followed the sizeand orientation of the original (Bi,Pb)-2212 phase.     Notizen: The effect of lead oxide compounds in (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox ((Bi,Pb)-2223) precursor powderon the microstructure and properties of Bi-2223/Ag tapes was investigated. Firstly, precursor powderscontaining different types of lead-rich phases were prepared by controlling the calcination temperatureand atmosphere. Then monofilament (Bi,Pb)-2223/Ag tapes were fabricated using these powders. Lastly,samples scissor from these tapes were heat treated under different conditions. The phase composition andmicrostructure of these powders and tapes were analyzed using XRD and SEM. Experimental resultsshow that the lead-rich phases in BSCCO precursor powders played an important role on the formation ofthe (Bi,Pb)-2223 phase, the microstructure and critical current of Bi-2223/Ag tapes

    Notizen: Summary Various iterative methods for solving the linear systems associated with finite element approximations to self-adjoint elliptic differential operators are compared based on their performance on serial and parallel machines. The methods studied are all preconditioned conjugate gradient methods, differing only in the choice of preconditioner. The preconditioners considered arise from diagonal scaling, incomplete Cholesky decomposition, hierarchical basis functions, and a Neumann-Dirichlet domain decomposition technique. The hierarchical basis function idea is shown to be especially effective on both serial and parallel architectures.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper has three topics. In Sect. 1, we present our results on the regularity and a priori estimates for solutions ofp-harmonic systems with Hölder continuous coefficients. Such systems come up in the study of Ginzburg-Landau type functional in higher dimensions. In Sect. 2, we study a stability inequality, which, in addition to its applications in the study of Ginzburg-Landau type functional, is of independent interest. In Sects. 3 and 4, we prove that for any sequence of minimizers of the higher dimensional Ginzburg-Landau type functional, a subsequence converges strongly away from a finite number of points, generalizing some of the two dimensional results of Bethuel, Brezis, and Hélein.

    Notizen: The stability range of lead oxide compounds Pb3Sr2.5Bi0.5Ca2CuOy (3321) phase in Bi-systemhigh temperature superconducting materials has been investigated. In this study (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox(BSCCO) powder was heat treated in different oxygen partial pressure and different temperature. Theformation and the relative volume fraction of the 3321 phase were determined by X-ray diffraction. Themicrostructure of the quenched pellets was observed using SEM. Experimental results show that thestability range of the 3321 phase depends on both the temperature and oxygen partial pressure. A threedimensional plot of relative 3321 phase formation was obtained for BSCCO powder in which the mainphase is (Bi,Pb)-2212 at different temperature and oxygen partial pressure

    Notizen: The reaction between α-tocopheroxyl radical (VE·) and ascorbic acid (VC) and its lipophilic derivatives ascorbyl-6-caprylate (VC-8), 6-laurate (VC-12) and 6-palmitate (VC-16) was studied by stopped-flow ESR spectroscopy in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles. The second-order rate constants for the reaction were found to be 9 · 0, 3 · 0, 0 · 7 and 0 · 03 × 105 1 mol-1 s-1 for VC, VC-8, VC-12 and VC-16, respectively, indicating a remarkable influence of the aliphatic side-chain on the reactivity. The lifetime of the reaction intermediate, ascorbate radical anion, was greatly enhanced by the lipophilic side-chain, being 0 · 4, 5 and 110 s for VC-8-., VC-12-. and VC-16-. respectively. Kinetic analysis shows that the inter- and intramicellar diffusion may be the rate-limiting steps for the reaction carried out in micelles.
