Notes: [Auszug] Orientated samples were collected from siltstone beds in the Kerry, south-west Clun Forest and Bishop's Castle areas of the Welsh borderland. The siltstone beds are of Lower Ludiovian age, and it has been suggested by Cummins2 that they were deposited by turbidity current flows. Evidence of the ...

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The authors measured the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy of approximately 400 specimens cut from oriented samples of greywacke taken at forty sites in a 1500 square-mile area in the Diablo Range, Central California. The magnetic fabric was judged to be of primary style at thirteen sites and to indicate that the direction of sediment transport was along an axis aligned N 60 E, with little variation in alignment over the area of the study. Rocks at the remaining sites were thought to have suffered slight but variable deformation, prior to folding, by a stress acting along an east-west axis. The rocks at five sites were metagreywackes. Although the metamorphism of these is believed to be the result of great pressure, there was no obvious effect of this pressure on the magnetic fabric.

Notes: Summary The stolon apices of genets of Trifolium repens were mapped in the field, and the distance moved by each apex eight days after mapping was measured. The spatial distribution of the apices was investigated using the Voronoi polygon construct. The spacing of apices was shown to differ between genets, and to be influenced by the proximity of neighbouring genets. The rate of extension of stolons was positively correlated with polygon area. The differences observed were interpreted in terms of differences in the positions of genets along the “phalanx-guerilla” continuum of growth forms. Mechanisms which may promote the intermingling of genets are discussed.

Notes: Abstract  As part of a series of experiments on determining the risk of introducing genetically modified wind-pollinated forage grasses an experiment on pollen dispersal was conducted and the use of theoretical descriptions to predict dispersal in model systems investigated. Pollen traps were placed around a central source of Lolium perenne. Traps were exposed with their sticky surfaces towards and away from the pollen source and also facing skywards during four stages of anthesis (early, mid 1, mid 2 and late). There was a great deal of variation in dispersal over time and to traps of different orientations. Twelve datasets were collected and used to comprehensively test Bateman’s equations for the wind dispersal of pollen. The equations were not particularly useful for describing dispersal over distance and clearly need to be modified to take factors such as wind direction into account.

Notes: Abstract  In part 1 an experiment was described for determining the extent of pollen dispersal from a Lolium source. The results were used to test Bateman’s pollen dispersal equations, which were found to be not particularly useful for describing variation in pollen deposition with distance. An improvement is suggested here which takes the influence of wind direction into account. For 11 of the 12 datasets the new equations fit significantly better than the original ones. Mean wind directions were used to produce 15 data subsets for testing Bateman’s equations for dispersal downwind of a pollen source. These equations fitted only 4 of the data subsets, all of which were collected from traps facing towards the pollen source. The usefulness of the model equations in estimating the importance of turbulence is brought into question. It is shown that models incorporating only distance and wind direction do not accurately describe pollen deposition. The amount of pollen deposited does not always decrease smoothly with increasing distance from the source. The variation in the amount of pollen deposited is probably influenced by several factors, including wind speed and turbulence.

Notes: Abstract Morphological characteristics of myocardial ventricular myocytes have been evaluated from 5 mammalian orders with resting heart rates ranging from 51 to 475 bpm. The purpose was to determine if morphological characteristics of the myocardia are related to the functional demand imposed on the cell as represented by the resting heart rate. Cell size is a constant among mammals of different sizes which have different physiological demands. In contrast, there is more mitochondrial area and less myofibrillar area per cell in animals with rapidly beating hearts than in animals with slower heart rates. Additionally, the mean cross sectional area of individual myofibrils is 30% larger in the cow as compared to the mouse. These findings combined with our previous studies indicate that the different functional requirements of myocardia from different mammalian orders are satisfied by intracellular adaptations of both a structural and biochemical nature.
