Notes: The interface structure of an ultrathin Co overlayer on a Pt(111) crystal was investigated with atomic-layer resolution medium-energy ion scattering spectroscopy and surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE). For a 7 ML Co, interdiffusion begins at 673 K to form a heavily distorted Co–Pt surface alloy layer with little change in SMOKE intensity. However, annealing at 773 K formed a 30 atomic-layer-thick Co–Pt substitutional alloy with 3.7% maximum tensile strain, at which the SMOKE intensity increased more than 200%. The enhancement of the Kerr intensity is discussed with the interface alloy formation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An improved gas-chromatographic method for the simultaneous determination of neutral sugars and uronic acids in hydrocolloids or industrial gums was developed. The procedure involved methanolysis with 0.5M methanolic HCl followed by trimethylsilylation. This method was simplified over other derivatization methods to make it suitable for the routine analysis of hydrocolloids or other polysaccharides which contain uronic acids. The usefulness of this method was demonstrated by analysis of commercially available hydrocolloids. The described method was sensitive enough to identify some of the minor sugar components which were not easily identified by other derivatization methods.

Notes: The ferritins are a multigene family of proteins that concentrate and store iron in all prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. 24 monomeric subunits which fold as four-helix bundles assemble to form a protein shell with 432 cubic symmetry and an external diameter of ∼130 Å. The iron is stored inside the protein shell as a mineralized core ∼80 Å in diameter. Recombinant amphibian red cell M ferritin crystallizes in ∼2 M (NH4)2SO4 at pH 4.6 in a space group that has not been reported previously. Electron microscopy, precession photography, Patterson and Fourier maps of the native protein and a UO{_2^{2+}} derivative, and simulations were used to determine that the unit-cell dimensions are a = b = 169.6, c = 481.2 Å, α = β = γ = 90° and the space group is P41212 or P43212. A preliminary model of the structure was obtained by molecular replacement, with amphibian red cell L ferritin as the model. In contrast to previously determined ferritin crystal structures which have intermolecular contacts at the twofold and threefold molecular axes, M ferritin crystals have a novel intermolecular interaction mediated by interdigitation of the DE loops of two molecules at the fourfold molecular axes.

Notes: The 11 pairs of enantiomorphic space groups with screw axes of opposite handedness generally can be distinguished when the asymmetric unit has known chirality. However, when the asymmetric unit has non-crystallographic rotational symmetry of the same fold or a multiple (in, where i is a positive integer) and the rotation axis is parallel to the screw axis, the screw axis reduces to a pure translational element. Under these circumstances, pairs of enantiomorphic space groups cannot be distinguished.

Notes: Binding of calcium ions to polysaccharides from two freshwater microalgae, Palmella texensis (UTEX 1708) and Cosmarium turpinii (UTEX LB 1042) (PTP and CTP, respectively), and six industrial hydrocolloids was studied. The amount of bound calcium decreased with a decrease in pH below 6. Scatchard analysis showed that PTP, guar and locust bean had low calcium affinity and one type of binding site. Alginate bound calcium with the greatest affinity (k= 1.31 × 106) among the hydrocolloids examined and appeared to have one type of binding site. Gum arabic and CTP appeared to have two types of binding sites. The order of magnitude of uronic acid in each hydrocolloid did not agree with the order of calcium binding affinity as an intrinsic association constant indicating limited importance of the chemical nature of hydrocolloids to the effect of linear charge density.

Notes: Abstract The electrochemical behaviour of tellurium in 2.5 M NaOH solution was studied for the recovery of tellurium from alkaline leach liquor of cemented Te using steady state polarization and cyclic voltammetry. The deposition characteristics and the potential range for a stable deposit of tellurium were also investigated. The morphology of deposited Te in alkaline solution showed a very porous nature and needlelike radial growth. The potential range for stable electrodeposition was between −0.8 V and −0.95 V (vs Hg/HgO electrode), but electrowinning could be carried out at more negative potentials due to the disproportionation reaction of Te2 2−. Laboratory-scale electrowinning experiments were performed under different operating voltages, temperatures and initial Te concentrations. The current efficiency was about 85–90% for 50% recovery and about 50–60% for 90% recovery. The purity of electrodeposited Te was higher than 99.95%.
