Notes: A true-breeding black gram (Vigna mungo) × green gram (Vigna radiata) derivative was reciprocally crossed with adzuki bean, Vigna angularis. Pollinated pistils were treated with gibberellic acid (GA3) (70 p.p.m.) 24 and 48 h after pollination. One fertile pod containing two hybrid seeds was obtained, when V. angularis was used as the male parent. One of these seeds germinated and a partly fertile interspecific hybrid was obtained. Its hybridity was confirmed at the seedling stage based on the presence of the green epicotyl colour of the adzuki bean. Pubescence of epicotyl, stem, leaf margins and pod, and the colour of the mature pod, characteristics of the black gram × green gram derivative, were also expressed in the hybrid. In addition, the hybrid exhibited two novel traits — the presence of racemose inflorescence and plant regeneration ability — not present in the parents. The study of this hybrid and four offspring revealed that green epicotyl colour of adzuki bean, and the pubescence of stem and leaf margins of the black gram × green gram derivatives were dominantly inherited traits. Colours of epicotyl and stem bases were found to be linked.

Notes: Summary A comparative study of peroxidase and esterase isozymes was carried out at five developmental stages of siliqua in order to characterize twelve genotypes of Indian mustard. The studies showed nearly the same number of isozyme bands at every stage for peroxidase and a varying number of isozyme bands for esterase. The appearance and disappearance of bands, along with their intensity scores, indicated the role of different isozymes at different stages of siliqua development. It has been ascertained that these patterns, especially the intensity scores, can be successfully used to characterize different Indian mustard genotypes.

Notes: Summary Combining ability studies with respect to such green fodder quality characteristics as oxalic acid, calcium, sodium, potassium and green fodder yield were carried out in a 12 × 12 diallel cross set in pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides (Burm) S. & H.). With regard to differential expression of gene effects, studies for quality traits were carried out in different seasons and on different plant parts. The relative proportions of general and specific combining variances indicated the preponderance of non-additive genetic variance. Parents possessing desirable fodder quality characteristics were identified on the basis of combining ability and per se performance, and selection criterion for crosses was discussed. It was recommended that leaf portion should be biochemically analysed and manipulated in an environment when the genes are expressed.

Notes: Summary The study of phenolic content and activities of peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase in relation to the degree of downy mildew infection of 12 pearl millet cultivars revealed that these were linearly related to the degree of resistance at both the 30 and 50 day growth stages. Useful electrophoretic differences in peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase were also observed with respect to the expression of resistance.

Notes: Abstract The use of isozymes as indicators of genetic diversity and as markers for the selection of agronomic traits has been proposed in different crop species. The present investigation was conducted to study the use of isozyme-derived genetic distance between parents in predicting the F1 heterosis in Indian mustard. In addition, the interaction of isozyme-based diversity with quantitative trait and pedigree-based diversity measures, and its role in predicting hybrid heterosis has also been examined. Sixteen Indian mustard lines and their 48 crosses (12 × 4, line x tester crossing) were evaluated over two environments for isozyme and quantitative morphological characters. The results from this study suggest that the heterotic response to isozymic changes is more responsive in crosses derived from morphologically and pedigree-wise related parents in comparison to crosses derived from unrelated parents. It was possible to improve heterosis predictions by partitioning the isozyme-based genetic distance into general genetic distance and specific genetic distance and correlating the latter with the specific combining ability of morphological traits. The possible reasons for these observations are discussed.

Notes: Summary The mode of inheritance of resistance to Ascochyta blight (Ascochyta rabiei) isolate G-52 in chickpea was studied in three cross combinations and their reciprocals. It was found that resistance variety I-13 was controlled by a single dominant gene pair.

Notes: Abstract Surface morphology of uredinia and urediniospores ofCerotelium fici (Cast.) Arth., and its infection process in mulberry (Morus alba L.) have been described using the scanning electron microscope. The uredinia ofC. fici are paraphysate and bear pedicellate urediniospores. The surface morphology of urediniospore is similar to most of the rust fungi which have pedicellate urediniospores. The infection process ofC. fici on mulberry leaves differs from other rust fungi in not forming appressoria over the stomates. Further, the germ tube of the urediniospore crosses over the stomata, and sometimes forms an appressorium close to the stoma rather than forming over it. Thus, the present study indicates that the formation of appressoria byC. fici on mulberry leaves is not site specific but an independent, specialized and inherent mechanism required byC. fici to penetrate the mulberry leaf cuticle and epidermis.

Notes: Abstract The derivatives have methyl, carbethoxy, and carbmethoxy groups or are higher homologs with unsaturated substituents. The bond orders and electron density per atom are calculated by the LCAO MO method in the Hückel approximation for the parent compound and the methyl derivatives. The spectra are recorded with an EPS-2 spectrophotometer, the solvents being ethanol and isooctane.
