Notes: Terahertz radiation from InSb and InAS, which are typical narrow band-gap semiconductors, was investigated using time-resolved THz emission measurements. When we compared between the polarity of the THz waveforms of these narrow band-gap semiconductors with that of InP, which is a wide bandgap semiconductor, we concluded that the ultrafast buildup of the photo-Dember field is the main mechanism for the emission of THz radiation in both InAs and InSb. The emission efficiency of InSb is approximately one-hundredth of that of InAs, although the electron mobility in InSb is higher than in InAs. Wavelength-dependent measurements implied that the anomalously low THz emission efficiency of InSb might be due to a reduction in transient mobility resulting from the scattering of electrons into the low-mobility L valley. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Terahertz radiation from longitudinal optical (LO) phonon–plasmon coupling modes in InSb films is observed using an ultrafast photoconductive antenna detector. We demonstrate a response frequency of up to 7 THz for a low-temperature-grown GaAs-based photoconductive antenna gated with 25 fs laser pulses. It is found that the emission frequencies of the coupling modes are dependent only on the residual carrier density, not on the excitation carrier density. It is also found that the LO phonon–plasmon oscillations in semiconductors can serve as an efficient THz source. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Conduction calorimetry was applied to an investigation of the early hydration of ordinary Portland cement (OPC)/high alumina cement (HAC) pastes. Three different rate of heat-evolution profiles were observed, depending on the HAC/OPC ratio. Relevant processes affecting heat development include ettringite formation, HAC and OPC hydration. Results from SEM examination and X-ray diffraction studies are also presented. An acceleration of OPC hydration was observed in pastes containing less than 12.5% HAC. A similar acceleration effect on HAC hydration was also obtained with the addition of OPC. A large amount of ettringite was formed and OPC hydration delayed in the pastes containing 15%–30% HAC. The latter could be one of the factors attributed to poor strength development in these HAC/OPC systems. Early hydration mechanisms of OPC/HAC systems are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract We have reviewed and discussed the generation of continuous-wave terahertz radiation by the photomixing of dual-mode lasers, which includes a multi-mode laser diode (LD), a dual-mode microchip laser, a monolithic dual-mode DBR LD, and a widely tunable dual-mode external cavity LD. It is demonstrated by several experiments that the beat frequency of a dual-mode laser is more stable than the original laser modes because of the common-mode rejection effect. We also suggest a novel scheme by which the optical beat is stabilized to less than 1 kHz and its frequency can be precisely determined as well.

Notes: Abstract Electrical conductivity measurements on cement composites containing carbon fibres or steel fibres were conducted. Percolation phenomena associated with electrical conductivity were observed. The conductivity of the systems studied increased by several orders of magnitude, at a specific concentration of conductive fibre, i.e. the percolation concentration. The percolation concentration is shown to be dependent on conductive fibre geometry instead of system composition. The results provide an important guide for the manufacture of conductive cement composites containing conductive fibres.

Notes: Abstract An attempt is made to clarify an argument related to the utilization of a.c. impedance spectroscopy for hydrating cement systems. The question relates to which electrode configuration, 2-point, 3-point or 4-point measurement, is pertinent for impedance spectrum measurement. Theoretical analysis and experiment indicate that these electrode configurations should in principle give the same results. The impedance spectra from 3- or 4-point measurement are, however, strongly influenced by the contact areas between the specimen and potential sensors. This influence is attributed to the potential sensor-specimen “contact capacitance effect”. The experiment indicates that when contact capacitance, or area, between the specimen and potential sensor is small enough the impedance spectrum in the Nyquist plot is characterized by an almost perfect semi-circle and negligible high frequency “offset” resistance. These are the typical characteristics of the spectra obtained from 3- and 4-point measurements with point contact between the potential sensors and specimen. The 2-point and 4-point measurements give the same spectra when contact capacitance approaches a sufficiently large value. It is apparent that the impedance spectra from 3- and 4-point measurements with point contact cannot reflect true information about hydrating cement systems. They are experimental artifacts. The 2-point measurements, however, can give more reliable results.
