Summary The geographer Dr. August Petermann, the geophysicist, navigator and head of expeditions Dr. Carl Weyprecht as well as the geophysicist and navigator Dr. G. Neumayer are the initiators of German Polar Research. Their efforts instigated research work in this field in other countries, as well. Subject of this paper is to underline Neumayer's historical importance, who was the first one to stress the necessity of simultaneous measurements of geophysical elements in the North-as well as in the South polar regions with special regard to geomagnetism and associate phenomena. Throughout half a century, he spared no effort to work for this goal. In appendix 1, Neumayer's activities are compiled in a documentary way while in appendix 2 the question is discussed how to count the Geophysical or Polar Years, respectively.
Abstract:
Polarjahre.
