Notes: Heat and mass transfer and coagulation are considered as related to the mean-square relative velocity between particle and fluid uR2 and eddy diffusion as described by the mean-square particle displacement, Xp2. The mathematical methods used are similar to those employed in the early calculations of the Brownian motion. The mean-square relative velocity is obtained as a function of particle characteristics, intensity of turbulence, and a fluid correlation coefficient. In the limiting case of equal particle and fluid density uR2 = 0, and for very heavy particles uR2 → uF2.A general expression for the eddy diffusivity is obtained is obtained which reduces to the same form as that of the fluid for the stationary state. However, the correlation coefficient to be used in the calculations depends on uR2. As a first approximation, it can be assumed that at a sufficiently long time from the introduction of the particles, fluid and particle diffusivities are equal. For short times after injection, the particle spread may be much less than that of the fluid. An illustrative calculation for the initial spreading of a jet of suspended particles is offered. In all cases an effort is made to organize the available experimental data within the framework of the theory.

Notes: Rates of mass and heat transfer to single spheres and cylinders at low Reynolds numbers are predicted from boundary-layer theory. The velocity distributions which are assumed to exist are those derived from the linearized Navier-Stokes equations by Tomotika and Aoi.In the case of the sphere the Nusselt number is found to be a function only of the Peclet group when the Stokes streamline function is assumed to apply. Experimental data for mass and heat transfer to singel spheres fall 10 to 40% higher than predicted from the theory. Experimental data for heat and mass transfer to single cylinders at large NPe check the theory.Curves are also plotted for the efficiency of removal of colloidal particles by combined direct interception and diffusion for both spheres and cylinders.

Notes: Experimental studies were made of fog formation in free jets containing glycerine and dibutyl phthalate. Visual and photographic observations showed that condensation took place near the nozzle in the mixing zone between the jet and the ambient air. Fog formation began at a well-defined location downstream from the nozzle depending on the initial velocity, temperature, and concentration of vapor. The location could be changed by inserting solid bodies or by adding foreign nuclei to the mixing zone. Measurements were made of mean temperature and concentration profiles in the mixing zone with noncondensable gases. These compared well with the predictions of turbulent boundary-layer theory. Calculations were made of the supersaturation to be expected in the case of glycerine. Downstream of the point where condensation first occurred fog filled most of the region where the calculated supersaturation was above unity. Based on the experimental evidence a mechanism is proposed for condensation in a free jet.

Notes: The stability characteristics of an aerosol reactor in a continuous stirred tank configuration have been investigated theoretically. Three dimensionless parameters, the surface tension group ∑, reaction rate group R, and residence time group θc, suffice to determine the dynamic behavior of this system. The stability of the unique steady state was investigated using linear analysis. Numerical integration of the full nonlinear equations shows that the dynamic behavior was in accord with the predictions of the linear stability theory. The system exhibits limit-cycle behavior in the unstable part of the parameter space. In the unstable region, a simple linear relation was found between the period of the numerically computed solutions and the bifurcation parameter, θc. The results of this study are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results of Badger and Dryden (1939).

Notes: Design equations are derived for calculating the properties of an aerosol generated in a tubular flow reactor operated at a constant rate of formation of condensable monomer. These equations lead to a set of characteristic dimensionless groups. Independently, it is shown that nearly monodisperse aerosols can be generated by: (1) separating particle formation and growth processes, (2) operating with a narrow residence time distribution, and (3) minimizing monomer concentration gradients. These criteria can be used in solving the design equations over ranges of the dimensionless groups suitable for monodisperse aerosol production. In general, high rates of monomer formation are desirable, subject to the desired particle size and concentration, but an upper bound may result from coagulation.
