    Notes: Abstract The chemical record in Loch Lomond sediments deposited since the end of the last Ice Age provides evidence of the Flandrian marine transgression some 5500–7000 14C years B.P., sedimentation rates and the influence of man's local activities, environmental pollution and its sources since the onset of the Industrial Revolution, and of elemental mobility linked with the reduction-diffusion-oxidation cycle of early sedimentary diagenesis. Information derived from vertical profiles of halogen elements bromine and iodine, radionuclides 14C and 210Pb, heavy metals lead, zinc, and cadmium, stable lead isotopes 206Pb and 207Pb, and redox-sensitive elements manganese, iron and arsenic is reviewed and assessed.

    Notes: Abstract It is often claimed that coastal marine and freshwater lake sediments preserve temporal records of anthropogenic input of heavy metals to the environment since the onset of the Industrial Revolution. Growing evidence of perturbatory factors such as physical and biological mixing, other redistributional processes and the early post-depositional diagenetic release and mobility of some elements is reviewed. Fundamental requirements of future studies are outlined.

    Notes: Abstract The arsenic levels of 23 mineral waters on sale to the public in the United Kingdom were measured. The arsenic content of most waters was below 1 μg L−1 but the statutory limits of 50 ug L−1 for natural mineral waters and 100 μg L−1 for non-alcoholic beverages were exceeded by the French mineral water, Vichy Célestins (220 ug L−1). Regular consumption of mineral water of such elevated concentration could make a significant contribution to the intake of the more toxic inorganic species of arsenic, with possible adverse long-term effects on the health of some individuals. The general need for analytical speciation studies of dietary arsenic is emphasised.

    Notes: Abstract Establishment of the chemical form and associations of trace elements is important in the scientific and medical fields related to environmental geochemistry and health. Fundamental understanding of trace-element behaviour, the realistic formulation of historical perspectives of trace-element contamination, an assessment of environmental transformation processes and a thorough appraisal of environment-related ill health and disease all depend on knowledge of the chemical speciation and partitioning of trace elements. These topics and the development of analytical speciation techniques and procedures are discussed with reference to trace-element studies in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Science, University of Glasgow, on lacustrine sediments and water, the atmosphere, soil and street dirt of an urban environment and human biological fluids.

    Notes: Abstract More than 60 coal samples, predominantly from the principal coalfields of England and Wales (25) and Scotland (30), were analysed for lead by AAS and for stable lead isotopes by ICP‐MS. While the average lead content of Scottish coal, 23.9 mg kg−1, was more than double that of coal from England and Wales, 11.0 mg kg−1, the corresponding mean 206Pb/207Pb ratios (± 1 s.d.) were nearly identical, at 1.181±0.011 and 1.184±0.006, respectively. In the light of the lead isotopic signatures of British coals and of both indigenous (206Pb/207Pb ∼ 1.17) and imported Australian (206Pb/207Pb ∼ 1.04) lead ores, an approach based on estimated lead emissions from these sources and the deconvolution of the historical lead and 206Pb/207Pb records preserved in lake sediments, peat bogs and archival herbage material indicates that coal combustion became an increasingly significant contributor to atmospheric lead deposition in the UK during the period 1830–1930, especially after the onset of England’s decline as a major location of lead mining and smelting in the late‐19th Century. Since 1930 and the introduction of leaded petrol, the atmospheric 206Pb/207Pb ratio in the UK has been strongly influenced by car‐exhaust emissions of comparatively 206Pb‐depleted lead of predominantly Australian origin, counter‐balanced to some extent by coal‐combustion emissions of lead, although these have fallen dramatically since the mid‐1950s. Nevertheless, with the introduction and substantial uptake of unleaded petrol in the UK during the last decade, even the declining releases from coal, along with contributions from other sources, are continuing to affect the atmospheric lead content and 206Pb/207Pb ratio.
