Notes: Summary Eight vertical profiles compiled from simultaneous measurements of Aitken nuclei and ozone concentrations over Germany in different weather conditions are discussed. The position and shape of the profiles is shown to depend on the prevailing weather conditions and the type of air masses. High aerosol concentrations in smoke plumes correlate in some cases with lower ozone concentrations, indicating that ozone in such cases is destroyed in the presence of high concentrations of pollutants such as aerosols and gases. A layered structure in the profiles was found only in association with temperature inversions and where the air above 2 km was subsiding, and was not found in convective parts of the troposphere.

Notes: Abstract Aboard commercial airliners twenty registrations of the ozone concentration of the upper troposphere were carried out within a period of 14 months between Europe and South Africa. Nearly each of these meridional ozone profiles shows an approximately constant ozone content between 25°S and 25°N with a pronounced seasonal variation. Most of these profiles show two marked peaks of the ozone concentration at about 30°N and between 40° and 45°N. Though the number of these registrations is not sufficient for statistical computations, the first results confirm the meridional ozone distribution, which was expected from studies with ozone-radiosonde soundings. Moreover a strong asymmetry of the northern and southern hemisphere is confirmed by these ozone measurements.

Notes: Abstract Ozone measurements aboard commercial airliners over Scandinavia and on transpolar flights were analyzed for tropospheric ozone concentration. The results confirm a region of enhanced stratospheric-tropospheric exchange around 60° latitude which was expected from Sr-90 fallout measurements.

Notes: Abstract By means of a meridional chain of 19 stations between Tromso, Norway, and Hermanus, South Africa, a permanent registration of ozone near the ground has been obtained since 1970. From the first year of operation surprisingly systematic annual variations come out, which agree with theoretical calculations on stratospheric-tropospheric exchange.

Notes: Summary Based on the global distribution of various surface types the mean tropospheric residence time τ of ozone is estimated as a function of latitude. Due to the land-sea distribution τ varies from 50 days in the northern hemisphere to 190 days in the southern hemisphere. For the stratospheric-tropospheric exchange a sinusoidal variation with season is assumed. The annual variation of tropospheric ozone thus gets a sine function from mean, amplitude and phase of whch the injection function for the particular latitude can be determined.

Notes: Summary Details of a new instrument to measure the concentration of Aitken nuclei (0.01 μm≤r≤0.1 μm), using the expansion chamber principle are discussed. The instrument automatically samples the air for its content of Aitken nuclei and the data are recorded photographically. The instrument was designed for concentrations in the range 1 to 1000 particles/cm3. The first balloon flights with the instrument were made in October 1973. The profiles show an approximately constant concentration of 300 particles/cm3 between 5 and 10 km, a decrease by an order of magnitude to 20 particles/cm3 in the region between 10 and 20 km, and then the concentration remains relatively constant at 20 particles/cm3 above 20 km. These measurements are also compared with older measurements.

Notes: Abstract A computational model describing the two-dimensional, turbulent mixing of a single jet of exhaust gas from aircraft engines with the ambient atmosphere is presented. The underlying assumptions and governing equations are examined and supplemented by a discussion of analytical solutions. As an application, the jet dynamics of a B747-400 aircraft engine in cruise and its dependence on key parameters is investigated in detail. The computer code for this dynamical model is computationally fast and can easily be coupled to complex chemical and microphysical models in order to perform comprehensive studies of atmospheric effects from aircraft exhaust emissions in the jet regime.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-Tetrafluoromethane (CF4), a potent greenhouse gas1 with an atmospheric life-time of at least 50,000 years (ref. 2), is believed to be of purely anthropogenic origin. Here we present evidence that about half the current atmospheric bur-den of CF4 has accumulated naturally from weak, probably ...
