Notizen: A one-dimensional thermal model is presented for calculating the maximum output power from InGaAsP/InP (λ=1.3 μm) buried heterostructure lasers, whose output power is limited by thermal considerations. The effect of Auger recombination and ohmic resistance, which play significant roles in these lasers at high temperatures, is included. We have also incorporated the temperature dependence of efficiency from first principles using experimentally available data for Auger and radiative recombination coefficients. Calculations made on InGaAsP/InP lasers show that a maximum cw power of 57 mW/facet (diamond heat sink) and a maximum operating temperature of up to 132 °C for a geometry similar to the double-channel buried heterostructure laser can be achieved. In addition, the model has been used to determine the maximum achievable power as a function of device geometry (active layer thickness, width, and length of the device). We find that by increasing the length of the laser from 300 to 700 μm we can increase the output power of the laser by 79%. The results obtained agree reasonably well with experiment.

Notizen: A high-power GaAs/GaAlAs double heterostructure laser is developed by using the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition technique. The laser has an index-guided, inverted channel substrate planar structure. Linear output power characteristics were observed to ∼80 mW cw on submount without facet coatings. The device operated in a stable single mode to a power 〉40 mW.

Notizen: The effects of temperature on the development of light leaf spot (Pyrenopeziza brassicae) on winter oilseed rape were investigated in controlled-environment experiments. The proportion of conidia which germinated on leaves, the growth rate of germ tubes, the severity of light leaf spot and the production of conidia increased with increasing temperature from 5 to 15 C. The time to 50% germination of conidia and the incubation and latent periods of light leaf spot lesions decreased when temperature increased from 5 to 15°C. At 20°C, however, light leaf spot severity and production of conidia were less and the incubation and latent periods were longer than at 15 C. There were differences between P brassicae isolates and oilseed rape cultivars in the severity of light leaf spot, the production of conidia and the length of the incubation period but not in the length of the latent period. The responses to temperature for lesion severity and incubation and latent periods appeared to be approximately linear over the temperature range 5-15°C and could be quantified using linear regression analysis.

Notizen: In controlled environment experiments to study early development of light leaf spot, lesions developed with leaf wetness durations of 16 to 48 h after inoculation of oilseed rape with conidial suspensions of Pyrenopeziza brassicae at 12 or 18°C, but not with leaf wetness durations of 0 to 13h. The incubation period was 21 to 22 days at 12°C and 14 to 18 days at 18°C for leaf wetness durations of 16 to 48 h. The latent period was 21 to 23 days at 12°C and 18 to 19 days at 18°C, and the total number of lesions increased with increasing leaf wetness duration at both temperatures. In field experiments, light leaf spot always developed on oilseed rape with a leaf wetness duration of 48 h after inoculation in both 1990/1991 and 1991/1992, but the percentage leaf area affected was less on plants placed in an oilseed rape crop than on those placed in a glasshouse. Plants moved to an oilseed rape crop immediately after inoculation nearly always developed light leaf spot symptoms when they were inoculated between 19 October 1990 and 1 March 1991 or between 27 September 1991 and 14 February 1992, but plants inoculated between 31 August and 16 October 1990 or on 20 September 1991, when estimated leaf wetness duration was less than 16 h for several days after they were placed in crops, did not develop symptoms. The latent period of light leaf spot on plants transferred to the oilseed rape crop was 15 to 40 days, and there was an approximately linear relationship between 1 (latent period) and mean temperature during this period. The accumulated temperature during the latent period ranged from c. 150 to 250 day-degrees. The severity of lesions on these plants increased with increasing temperature from 5 to 15°C.

Notizen: Abstract The genes for utilization of xylose were transferred from Pachysolen tannophilus to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The hybrids resembled the S. cerevisiae parent morphologically and in sugar assimilation. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis showed that the chromosome banding pattern was intermediate between the two parental species.

Notizen: Abstract Yeasts were isolated from exudates of algarrobo trees from nine sites in northwest Argentina, three in the Chaco region, from pods of algarrobo and acacia, collected in the Quebrada de Cafayate, and from rot pockets in decaying columnar cacti at Cachi (Parc Nacional des Cardons), and at Las Ruinas de Quilmes. Most of the yeasts isolated from exudates of algarrobo were identified asBullera variabilis, Candida famata, Cryptococcus albidus and otherCryptococcus species,Debaryomyces hansenii, Pichia angusta (Hansenula polymorpha),Pichia ciferrii, Pichia farinosa andTorulaspora delbrueckii. OtherCandida, Kluyveromyces andPichia species were found. Most species were osmotolerant. The high sugar content of the exudates influenced the nature of the yeast species present. The pods containedCryptococcus spp.,Candida famata andCandida ciferrii spp. Half the species isolated from rotting cactus wereCryptococcus species.Pichia membranaefaciens andTorulaspora delbrueckii were also isolated. Of 553 cultures investigated, 49 utilized methanol.

Notizen: Summary Yeasts were isolated from exudates from trees at three sites in northwest Argentina, two between the towns of Amaicha del Valle and Cafayate and one in the Quebrada de Cafayate, a deep river valley north of Cafayate. The majority of the yeasts were identified asCandida famata andRhodotorula graminis, though isolates of other species ofRhodotorula, Candida boidinii, Pichia membranaefaciens, and occasional isolates of other species were obtained. None of the species was the same as those isolated in Crete, from pods of the carob (European algarrobo). Of 96 cultures investigated, 26 utilized methanol as sole carbon source. The frequency of isolation of methylotrophic yeasts from this habitat may prove to be of considerable scientific and technological interest.
