Notes: Polymer crystalline regions can be characterized by wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS)and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The in-situ study of isotactic polypropylene withmeasurement of wide angle and small angle X-ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS), at varyingdistances from the exit of the extruder have been successfully completed using an X-ray systemwith a standard X-ray source. The processing conditions, used were: 50, 100, 200 and 400m.min-1for the take up speed, 0.3, 0.6, and 1.2 cm3min-1hole-1 for the melt flow rates, and a spinningtemperature of 220°C. These experimental conditions produced draw down ratios ranging from 33up to 1058. The X-ray characterization was carried in-situ at 15, 30, 45 and 60 cm from the exit ofthe spinneret and also ex-situ. The results obtained show the crystallinity index and the crystallineorientation to increase for the higher draw down rates, as expected under draw inducedcrystallization conditions, and a logarithmic relationship was observed within the experimentalconditions used in this work. This communication reports the relationship between the crystallinity, crystalline orientation and lamellar long period and draw down ratio along the spin line

Notes: The transfer of charge across the interface between two materials brought into contact was studied by measuring the small currents produced when layered films composed of two dissimilar films were first heated and then held under isothermal conditions. It was found that, given a fixed electrode orientation, the polarity of the current generally reversed when the relative position of the films were reversed. The sense of the current was in agreement with that expected from the polymer work functions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 35: 2901-2912, 1997

Notes: The tensile properties of filaments have been related to fiber microstructure in numerous studies over several decades. However, there have been relatively few attempts to relate shear modulus to microstructure: most of the work on shear properties of filaments was done over 20 years ago. Since then, there have been advances in instrumentation and polymer technology. We present a review of the literature in these areas. We report the construction of a fully automated torsion balance and its efficacy in an investigation of the relationship between polypropylene (PP) fiber microstructure and shear modulus. This work lays the foundation for a definitive research program into microstructure/shear properties' interrelationships in fibers. Our torsion test apparatus is an enhanced implementation of the simple torsion balance. Data acquisition and test parameters are completely controlled by a microcomputer. Raw data from digital position encoders is converted into torquetwist data, which is then presented to a statistical program to determine the initial shear modulus of the filament. Torsion testing was performed on six PP fiber samples. It was found that the shear modulus of the filaments increased with an increase in amorphous orientation, but that in a filament with a radially differentiated structure, the relationship is biased by the modulus of the outer portion of the filament. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: Article Calculations suggest that ion transport through nanochannels is significantly modified as the diameter approaches molecular dimensions. Choi et al. introduce a single-nanotube platform to demonstrate this effect and find a maximum ion transport rate at a diameter of approximately 1.6 nm.
