Notes: Abstract: We derive the effective low-energy theory for single-wall carbon nanotubes including the Coulomb interactions among electrons. The generic model found here consists of two spin- fermion chains which are coupled by the interaction. We analyze the theory using bosonization, renormalization-group techniques, and Majorana refermionization. Several experimentally relevant consequences of the breakdown of Fermi liquid theory observed here are discussed in detail, e.g., magnetic instabilities, anomalous conductance laws, and impurity screening profiles.

Notes: [Auszug] The constellation Vela was scanned by the Rosat X-ray telescope during the all-sky survey between October 1990 and January 1991. The image including the Vela supernova remnant (SNR) region is shown in Fig. 1. Before the Rosat observations, only the X-ray-brightest parts, marked in red and white in ...

Notes: Abstract This paper presents the results of stationary-phase Monte Carlo simulations for the dynamics of the spin-boson problem. The problem of alternating weights ubiquitous in dynamical simulations has been solved using discretized path-integral simulations in conjunction with stationary-phase filtering techniques. Our computation covers the bulk of the parameter space, including non-zero bias and frequency-dependent dissipation. Besides a comparison with analytic predictions, we present some new results. For sub-Ohmic dissipation, the dynamics at low temperatures depends significantly on the initial preparation. In the Ohmic regime 1/2〈K〈1, whereK is Kondo's dimensionless coupling strength, we find significant deviations from the predictions of the non-interacting blip approximation at long times and low temperatures.

Notes: Abstract A summary of the lively discussions in working group 2 (WG2) on the origin and evolution of the LB is given below. The debate focussed mainly on the problem of how to pin down the physical properties of the LB. As a first step, we had to critically assess the observational constraints that are put on any model, predominantly from the SXR and EUV data. Next we were discussing models on the origin and evolution of the LB, which are able to explain the observations and which would allow to infer basic LB properties. A simple model, emphasizing the self-consistent dynamical and thermal evolution of a non-equilibrium plasma is presented. We also found, that picturing the LB as an isolated phenomenon is not supported by the data. Instead, the LB environment and its influence on the evolution of the LB have to be taken into consideration. Two different views are presented here. Either the LB and the Loop I superbubble are two physically separate phenomena, which are currently interacting, or star formation epochs in the Scorpius-Centaurus Association interacting with the molecular gas in the Aquila Rift and the interarm region around the Sun may have sculpted the configuration of interstellar matter within 200 parsecs, including the Local Bubble. However, so far observational constraints are insufficient to establish a canonical model of the evolution and the origin of the LB.

Notes: Abstract The local interstellar medium can be probed in different ways: by analyzing low energy X-ray data in the range 0.1–0.4 keV, where the radiation is absorbed by the interstellar gas at column densities in excess of about 1020 cm-2 — and can therefore be regarded as ‘local’, by determining the absorption of stellar emission spectra from nearby stars along their lines of sight by intervening gas and by directin situ measurements of those components which penetrate the heliosphere sufficiently far, provided they can be distinguished from interplanetary material. The current status of these different investigations gives the following picture: the solar system is surrounded by a ‘bubble’ of hot gas (density 0.005cm-3, temperature 106 K) out to several tens of parsecs. More locally it is embedded in a small warm cloud of density 0.07cm-3, temperature 7000 K, column density ∼ 5 × 1017 cm-2 — which gives a mass of about 0.1M ⊙. The transition to the heliosphere is governed by solar UV ionization, snowploughing of the interstellar gas by the outwardly expanding solar wind and the bow shock. The heliosphere is the region inside the solar wind terminal shock. Classically it would be regarded as not yet affected by (or aware of) the obstacle ahead. Practically, the existence of the interstellar medium makes itself felt even far inside the heliosphere by the penetration of neutral gas, dust, plasma waves, shock accelerated particles and cosmic rays. These are the local ‘probes’ of the interstellar medium.

Notes: Abstract This paper is based on an Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratories-sponsored program to evaluate strain gages embedded in boron-epoxy test coupons. The strain gages, embedding techniques and specimen configurations used were relatively uncomplicated. The results of the program showed that the embedded-gage performance was comparable to surface-mounted-gage performance and are intended to provide a basis for more complex applications such as in joints, near holes and in sandwiched metal/fibrous composites.
