Description: Against the background of the media commercialization reform since the 1990s in China and drawing on the case of »X-Change« (2006-2019), Wei Dong investigates the affective meaning-making mechanism in the multimodal text of Chinese reality TV. The focus lies on the ways in which emotions are appropriated and disciplined by regimes of power and identity, and the ways in which affect - in this case primarily kuqing (bitter emotions) communicated by the material and the body - have the potential to challenge or exceed existing relations of power in the mediascape. Wei Dong shows how Chinese reality TV provides a historical and theoretical opportunity for understanding the affective structures of contemporary China in the dynamic process of fracture and integration.

Notes: The use of error-correcting codes as a source of efficient designs of phase permutation schemes is described. Three codes are used, all taken from the Bricogne BUSTER program [Bricogne (1993). Acta Cryst. D49, 37–60]: the Hamming [7, 4, 3], the Nordström–Robinson (16, 256, 6) and the Golay [24, 12, 8] or its punctured [23, 12, 7] form. These are used in a maximum-entropy–likelihood phasing environment to carry out phase permutation of basis-set reflections instead of the usual quadrant permutation or magic integer approaches. The use of codes in this way inevitably introduces some errors in the phase choices, but for most structures this is not significant especially when the gain in sampling efficiency is considered. For example, the Golay [24, 14, 8] allows the permutation of 24 centric phases in such a way that only 4096 phase sets are produced instead of 224 = 16 777 216, and one of these sets has, at most, only four wrong phases. The method is successfully applied to three powder diffraction data sets of increasing complexity, and with increasing degrees of overlap {Mg3BN3, Sigma-2 ([Si64O128]\,\cdot\,4C10H17N) and the NU-3 zeolite}, a sparse electron diffraction data set for buckminsterfullerene, C60, and the small protein molecule crambin at 3 Å resolution where 42 reflections are phased with a U-weighted mean phase error of 58.5°.

Notes: In the present paper, effects of through-the-thickness stitching of delaminated glass/epoxycomposite laminates with two different types of aramid threads, Kevlar® and Twaron® threads, on thebuckling loads are studied. The buckling loads are predicted based on the Southwell, Vertical displacementand Membrane strain plot methods from the experimental data. Flexural modulus of the stitched andunstitched glass/epoxy composite laminates, knot tensile strength of Kevlar® and Twaron®stitching threads are obtained experimentally. From the Southwell, Vertical displacement andMembrane strain plot methods it is observed that stitching either by Kevlar® or Twaron® threadsis effective in improving the buckling strength of glass/epoxy composite laminates when thedelamination length is greater than 0.5L, L is the length of the laminate

Notes: Carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been shown to enhance the engineering properties ofplastic fibers in ballistic-resistant garments enabling the garments to withstand very high impactforces while remaining to be lightweight. Previous study shows that by reinforcing ultra highmolecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers with a small amount of carbon nanotubes, thefibers are simultaneously toughened and strengthened. In this paper, we study the mechanicalproperties of carbon nanotube reinforced ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) byusing micromechanics-based Mori-Tanaka model. Results show that the addition of small amount ofcarbon nanotubes as reinforcement can substantially improve the mechanical properties of theUHMWPE fibers

Notes: Most of the previous studies utilized the maximum applied load and the initial cracklength to determine the fracture criterion for Ⅰ-Ⅱ mixed mode fracture of concrete. Actually, thecrack has propagated in the ultimate state due to the semi-brittle behaviors of concrete. Therefore, adopting the initial fracture toughness as the fracture criterion seems more reasonable. This subjectcarried out an experiment of four-point shearing notched beams of concrete with five differentheights, i.e, 200mm, 300mm, 400mm, 500mm and 600mm to determine the initial cracking stateaccording to sudden decrease of the strain gauges’ values. Then the initial cracking load ini P can begained. Besides, the quarter point singular element approach was used to calculate the stressintensity factors iniI K and iniII K corresponding to ini P in the present study. Moreover, differentcombinations of iniI K and iniII K were obtained according to different positions of pre-cracks.Correspondingly, the Ⅰ-Ⅱmixed mode fracture initial cracking criterion for concrete can be gainedusing the curves of track formed by the different combinations of iniI K and iniII K . Through analyzingthe curves of track under different specimen heights, it was found that the size effect existssignificantly in the specimens with heights from 300mm to 500mm, however, the curves in the500mm and 600mm specimens approach each other

Notes: An electrical conducting copper coating on the glass substrate is deposited by means ofwire exploding spray coating (WESC). The coating system basically consists of a high voltage pulsedpower supply and a coating chamber. A pulsed voltage is produced by the power supply upon themetal wire in the coating chamber. The whole process is under taken at atmosphere pressure and roomtemperature. The coating is more uniform when a higher discharging voltage is applied, which meansmore energy is deposited into the copper wire in the identical time, so the wire will be destructed moreefficiently. A 20 kV discharging voltage is applied in this paper for the balance of coating quality andharmless to the glass substrate. The coating samples are analyzed by a series of tests. The SEM photograph shows that the copperparticles penetrate deeply into the glass substrate, which results in a strong adhesion of the coating, and the thickness of the coating is about 400 to 500 μm after sprayed three times. The electricalconductivity of the copper coating is about 1.837*104 1-1·m-1 tested by a Kelvin electric bridge, andthe 50 Hz withstand voltage of the glass tube before and after the spray coating is about 40 kV and 38kV, respectively, with no obvious decrease

Notes: A crack propagation criteria is proposed for mixed mode I-II fracture in concrete based onthe initial cracking KⅠ-KⅡ curve obtained from experiment. Once the difference between the stressintensity factor at the crack tip caused by the external load and the one caused by the cohesive forceattains the above KI-KII curve, the crack begins to propagate. Based on this criteria, the finite elementmethod was used to simulate the mixed mode I-II crack initiation, stable propagation and unstablefailure in concrete. For the four-point shear concrete specimens, the crack propagation trajectory andP-CMSD (Crack Mouth Sliding Displacement) curve were obtained. Upon the comparison with theexperimental results, the calculated results show good agreement. It is concluded that, if the elasticmodulus E, the uniaxial tensile strength ft and the initial cracking KI-KII curve of concrete aremeasured from experiment, the complete process of mixed mode I-II crack propagation can besimulated using the proposed criterion
