Abstract A detailed investigation into the effect of altering the zero frequency f(0) and filter order M on the shape of the magnitude/frequency-response characteristics of lowpass, linear phase, integer multiplier, recursive digital filters is first carried Out. Using the results obtained from this investigation, a method, which may be used to design an Mth-order filter (M=1,2,3…) to a specified cutoff frequency f(3 dB), is derived. Then, the magnitude/frequency-response characteristics for 1st, 2nd and 3rd-order filters, having the same cutoff frequency, are compared and a procedure for optimising the filter characteristics for a specific application is suggested. Finally, the advantages of using this method for the digital filtering of the electrocardiogram are discussed.
