Summary The determination of cobalt in plant material has been investigated. The method adopted is based on the colorimetric determination of the cobalt-nitroso-R-salt complex. Interference by iron is avoided by extraction of the cobalt from the digestion solution by means of dithizone. The method has several advantages. The tedious fuming off of sulphuric acid and removal of calcium salts is unnecessary, and the determinations of cobalt and copper in the same aliquot are possible. Figures are given for the cobalt content of fresh grass and hay. Much too high results will be obtained if the samples are contaminated with soil.
