    Description: In the context of global warming, the present study aimed to identify at which stages the embryos of the holobenthic species Octopus maya are the most sensitive to temperature. We used temperature as a tool to induce minimum (TIMR-min: 11°C) and maximum metabolic rates (TIMR-max: 30°C) on embryos that came from three wild females caught off Sisal harbor (21°10'N, 90°02'W; Yucatán, Mexico) in March 2016. Higher metabolic rate values were recorded at stages XV and XVI, when the three hearts start beating, compared to stage X, when organogenesis begins. The factorial metabolic scope (FMS = TIMR-max ? TIMR-min) was higher at stages XV and XVI than the more mature stages, establishing stage XVII as the most vulnerable. High temperature exposure applied only during the earliest developmental stages (until stage XV) could have adaptive advantages if spawning occurs during hot waves in tropical coastal zones where the embryos are incubated or used for aquaculture purposes by shortening the time before hatching without physiological costs.

    Description: The damselfish Neopomacentrus cyanomos were collected twice under an oil-loading platform 1.5 km from the Cayo Arcas reef (20.21°N, −91.98°W), in August 2016 (n = 16) and August 2017 (n = 30). All fish sampled in August 2016 were submitted to an acute-thermal-decline protocol (−4 °C over a period of 1 h, and maintaining the temperature for 23 h), while the ones collected in August were acclimated 45 days at 18, 20, 22, and 26 °C. Finally, half of the acclimated fish were submitted to a high temperature challenge to assess the effect of cold thermal acclimation on heat tolerance scope. Data of routine metabolic rates, blood metabolites and biochemical stress indicators from each fish are provided in this data set.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of 96 h exposure tosublethal cadmium concentrations on oxygen consumptionrate (VO2 mg h-1) and oxygen extractionefficiency (OEE′ %) was determined in juvenile Ctenopharyngodon idella acclimated to 26, 29 and 32 °C for at least two weeks. The relationshipsamong the physiological rates (VO2 andOEE′, body weight and temperature, were fittedby second order polynomial models; the responsesurfaces generated allowed the evaluation of stressinduced by the interaction of those variables. BothVO2 and OEE′ invariably increased astemperature increased. In small animals kept in 0.5 mgCd L-1, the VO2 increase was compensated bya proportional increase in OEE′, whereas inlarger fishes (〉1 g) no compensatory response wasobserved. Both small and large fishes were unable tocompensate for a higher VO2 when exposed tohigher cadmium concentration. It is concluded thatOEE′ in young fish is an early response of stressdue to sublethal cadmium exposure.

    Notes: Abstract In order to determine whether the coselection observed between the selection trait (active avoidance behavior) of the Roman High Avoidance (RHA) and Roman Low Avoidance (RLA) rat lines and their neuroendocrine characteristics were genetically determined, we analyzed, in nonsegregating (RHA, RLA, and F1) and segregating (F2 and the two backcrosses) crosses, the inheritance pattern and the phenotypic correlations among behavioral (shuttle-box behavior), physiological (body, adrenal, and thymus weights), and neuroendocrine (corticosterone and prolactin reactivity, catecholamine enzyme activities) variables. Physiological characteristics and enzyme activities have acrucial role in sex dissociation. Avoidance behavior and prolactin reactivity to novel environment remained associated in segregating crosses despite gene rearrangement. They represented the most important variables to differentiate the Roman lines, perhaps sharing a common regulatory mechanism under genetic control.

    Notes: Abstract Screening for handedness was performed in 11 inbred strains of mice. Direction and degree of handedness were measured for both males and females in each strain. The data show that there are almost as many right-as left-handed subjects and no strain could be classified as right-or left-handed. Females, however, tend to be more strongly lateralized than males. The range of variation for degree of handedness is pronounced between strains. These results thus suggest that degree of handedness would be the relevant variable in a genetic analysis of handedness in mice. They are in agreement with Collins' previous results showing a response to selection for degree, but not for direction, of handedness.

    Notes: Abstract Two kinds of vocalizations are produced by newborn mice: whistles (between 50 and 150 ms in length), having a narrow bandwidth in each strain that ranges from 30 to 90 kHz; and clicks, which are shorter (about 1 ms) and have a larger bandwidth. These vocalizations were individually recorded in 1-day-old pups from seven inbred strains of laboratory mice, at two temperatures (23±0.5 and 15±0.5°C). The numbers of clicks and whistles were counted under these two conditions. Moreover, the length and frequencies at the beginning, apex, and end of the whistles were measured during the 15°C condition. Correlations, including several components—additivity, epistasis (between homozygous loci), and maternal environment—were calculated between the characteristics of the whistles during the 15°C condition. Clicks and whistles were also counted from 1 to 8 days of age during the 15°C condition. The numbers of clicks and whistles were age dependent, with a decrease from day 1 to day 8 for the clicks and a consistent production of whistles. A quantitative genetic analysis was also performed on the 1-day-old pups from the mendelian generations produced by the inbred strains most contrasting for the number of whistles produced in the cold condition: NZB/BINJ and CBA/H. The heterozygous genotype of the mother induced an increment of the number of whistles. Moreover, a significant part of the additive variance was suspected from the first design, and found with the second one, for this variable. Quantitative genetic analysis showed significant dominance and epistasis between homozygous loci and homozygous and heterozygous loci. This points to multigenic correlates for the number of whistles in this population. The significant additive values for all the variables recorded during the 15±0.5°C condition and for the number of whistles produced during the 23±0.5°C condition are compatible with an effect the indicates neither directional nor stabilizing selection. This results is examined in the light of the multichannel sensorial process implicated in maternal behavior in mice.

    Notes: Summary Copolymers containing vinyltrimethylsilane and vinyltrimethoxysilane with N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone at different compositions were synthesized and characterized. The reactivity ratios was estimated by using the classical Fineman-Ross and Kelen Tüdos linear fitting procedures. These parameters were also estimated through a computer program based on nonlinear minimization algorithm, starting from the r1 and r2 values obtained by the former procedures. The analysis of the results allow us to interpret the reactivity behaviour of these polymers in terms of the relative reactivity of the substiuents. The effect of the chemical structure of the polymer side group is discussed in terms of the different contributions to the stabilization of the radical intermediates.

    Notes: Poly(oxythiocarbonyloxy-1,4-phenyleneisopropylidene-1,4-phenylene) (1) was obtained from 4,4′-isopropylidenediphenol (Bisphenol A) and thiophosgene under phase transfer conditions, using quaternary ammonium and phosphonium salts and crown ethers as catalysts. The polymer was identified by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and the molecular weights were estimated from inherent viscosity measurements. The influence of catalysts, solvent and thiophosgene addition was studied in order to find the best conditions. It was found that tetrabutylammonium bromide, dichloromethane and the addition of thiophosgene at once gives the highest yields and inherent viscosities. Other catalysts and solvents were less efficient or unefficient for this reaction.
