Notes: The 10 new member states and candidate countries from Central and Eastern Europe have made the institutional reforms embodied in the acquis communautaire, including developing institutions of social dialogue which are supposed to ease the path to entry into the European Monetary Union (EMU). This review assesses the challenges facing the Central and Eastern European countries in achieving the targets set for EMU entry and questions whether the existing institutions of social dialogue will be able to bear the strain of achieving those targets.

Notes: This paper identifies the constraints and opportunities facing trade unions in post-socialist societies through a comparison of the Russian and Chinese cases. The paper charts the changing role of trade unions in the integration of state-socialist economies into global capitalism and argues that this presents the trade unions with a dilemma: whether to reconstitute their traditional role through collaboration with management and the state apparatus, or whether to develop their ability to defend the rights and interests of workers. While the former offers the line of least resistance, there are progressive elements pushing for change in both trade union movements.

Notes: In the absence of slavery, worker and employer enter into an enforceable contractual agreement whereby the former is regularly paid by the latter. The systematic non-payment of wages in Russia is the most tangible manifestation of the absence of the rule of law in that country and represents a potent obstacle to the development of effective trade unionism. However, the wage issue has to be set in the context of the wider malaise of non-payment which exists, and for which central government must bear primary responsibility. This paper explores the dilemmas which this situation presents to the union movement and seeks to address the questions of what can and should the unions do about the situation? Because of the depth of the crisis inflicted on the economy by "shock therapy", the answers are not to be found in the bankruptcy courts. While not abrogating their union functions, the trade unions must seek the satisfaction of realisable political demands.

Notes: We consider the evolution of an initial disturbance described by the modified Korteweg–de Vries equation with a positive coefficient of the cubic nonlinear term, so that it can support solitons. Our primary aim is to determine the circumstances which can lead to the formation of solitons and/or breathers. We use the associated scattering problem and determine the discrete spectrum, where real eigenvalues describe solitons and complex eigenvalues describe breathers. For analytical convenience we consider various piecewise-constant initial conditions. We show how complex eigenvalues may be generated by bifurcation from either the real axis, or the imaginary axis; in the former case the bifurcation occurs as the unfolding of a double real eigenvalue. A bifurcation from the real axis describes the transition of a soliton pair with opposite polarities into a breather, while the bifurcation from the imaginary axis describes the generation of a breather from the continuous spectrum. Within the class of initial conditions we consider, a disturbance of one polarity, either positive or negative, will only generate solitons, and the number of solitons depends on the total mass. On the other hand, an initial disturbance with both polarities and very small mass will favor the generation of breathers, and the number of breathers then depends on the total energy. Direct numerical simulations of the modified Korteweg–de Vries equation confirms the analytical results, and show in detail the formation of solitons, breathers, and quasistationary coupled soliton pairs. Being based on spectral theory, our analytical results apply to the entire hierarchy of evolution equations connected with the same eigenvalue problem. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The existence of "dispersion-managed solitons," i.e., stable pulsating solitary-wave solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodically modulated and sign-variable dispersion is now well known in nonlinear optics. Our purpose here is to investigate whether similar structures exist for other well-known nonlinear wave models. Hence, here we consider as a basic model the variable-coefficient Korteweg–de Vries equation; this has the form of a Korteweg–de Vries equation with a periodically varying third-order dispersion coefficient, that can take both positive and negative values. More generally, this model may be extended to include fifth-order dispersion. Such models may describe, for instance, periodically modulated waveguides for long gravity-capillary waves. We develop an analytical approximation for solitary waves in the weakly nonlinear case, from which it is possible to obtain a reduction to a relatively simple integral equation, which is readily solved numerically. Then, we describe some systematic direct simulations of the full equation, which use the soliton shape produced by the integral equation as an initial condition. These simulations reveal regions of stable and unstable pulsating solitary waves in the corresponding parametric space. Finally, we consider the effects of fifth-order dispersion. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Official Russian trade unions seek to maintain their traditional privileges and resources, while alternative unions have remained marginal and relatively ineffectual. The result is that workers are not effectively represented by either type of union. This argument is supported by extensive original research, examining the recent history of Russian unionism.

Notes: As an important facet of host–pathogen interaction, Staphylococcus aureus has the ability to adhere to human extracellular matrix (ECM) components via a range of surface proteins. Here we have shown that IsdA has broad-spectrum ligand-binding activity, including fibrinogen and fibronectin. Mapping studies revealed a distinct domain responsible for ligand binding. This domain is present in a number of iron-regulated proteins of S. aureus and in other Gram-positive organisms. The isdA gene is only expressed in iron-limited conditions under the control of Fur and not in standard laboratory media. Such conditions occur in serum in vitro and during infection. Whole cell binding and clumping assays revealed that when the bacteria are grown under iron-limited conditions, IsdA constitutes a physiologically relevant adhesin to both fibrinogen and fibronectin. Thus for S. aureus, iron is an important marker for the host environment, to which the bacterium responds by differential regulation of at least one element of its adhesive strategy.
