    Notes: The upper pressure limit of pyrophyllite is given by the equilibria (i) pyrophyllite=diaspore+quartz and (ii) pyrophyllite=diaspore+coesite. High-P experimental investigations carried out to locate equilibrium (i) yield brackets between 497 °C/24.8 kbar and 535 °C/25.1 kbar, and between 500 °C/23 kbar and 540 °C/23 kbar. Equilibrium (ii) was bracketed at 550 °C between 26.0 and 28.3 kbar. In the experimental P–T  range, equilibria (i) and (ii) are metastable with respect to kyanite. A stable P–T  grid is calculated using thermodynamic data derived under consideration of the present experimental results. According to these data, the lower pressure limit of the assemblage diaspore+quartz according to equilibrium (i) range from about 12 kbar/300 °C to 20 kbar/430 °C (in the presence of pure water). The upper stability of diaspore+quartz is limited by the reaction diaspore+quartz=kyanite+H2O at about 450 °C (nearly independent of pressure) and, to higher pressure, by the quartz=coesite transition. Equilibrium (ii) is metastable over the whole P–T  range.Natural occurrences600.S of the diaspore–quartz assemblage in metamorphic rocks in Sulawesi, New Caledonia, Amorgos and the Vanoise are characterized by minerals indicative of high-P such as ferro-magnesiocarpholite, glaucophane, sodic pyroxene and lawsonite. The metamorphic P–T  conditions of these rocks are estimated to be in the range 300–400 °C, 〉8 kbar. These data are compatible with the derived P–T  stability field of the diaspore+quartz assemblage. We conclude that, in metamorphic rocks, diaspore+quartz is, as ferrocarpholite, an indicator for unusual low-T /very high-P settings.

    Notes: Metasedimentary rocks generally contain carbonaceous material (CM) deriving from the evolution of organic matter originally present in the host sedimentary rock. During metamorphic processes, this organic matter is progressively transformed into graphite s.s. and the degree of organisation of CM is known as a reliable indicator of metamorphic grade. In this study, the degree of organisation of CM was systematically characterised by Raman microspectroscopy across several Mesozoic and Cenozoic reference metamorphic belts. This degree of organisation, including within-sample heterogeneity, was quantified by the relative area of the defect band (R2 ratio). The results from the Schistes Lustrés (Western Alps) and Sanbagawa (Japan) cross-sections show that (1) even through simple visual inspection, changes in the CM Raman spectrum appear sensitive to variations of metamorphic grade, (2) there is an excellent agreement between the R2 values calculated for the two sections when considering samples with an equivalent metamorphic grade, and (3) the evolution of the R2 ratio with metamorphic grade is controlled by temperature (T). Along the Tinos cross-section (Greece), which is characterised by a strong gradient of greenschist facies overprint on eclogite facies rocks, the R2 ratio is nearly constant. Consequently, the degree of organisation of CM is not affected by the retrogression and records peak metamorphic conditions. More generally, analysis of 54 samples representative of high-temperature, low-pressure to high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphic gradients shows that there is a linear correlation between the R2 ratio and the peak temperature [T(°C) = −445 R2 + 641], whatever the metamorphic gradient and, probably, the organic precursor. The Raman spectrum of CM can therefore be used as a geothermometer of the maximum temperature conditions reached during regional metamorphism. Temperature can be estimated to ± 50 °C in the range 330–650 °C. A few technical indications are given for optimal application.

    Notes: Abstract Both the coarse- and fine-grained varieties of the partly coesite-bearing pyrope-quartzites, their interlayered jadeite-kyanite rocks, and the biotite-phengite gneiss country rock common to all of them were subjected to detailed petrographic and textural studies in order to determine the sequence of crystallisation of their mineral constituents, which were also studied analytically by microprobe. Prior to pyrope and coesite growth, the Mg-rich metapelites were talc-kyanite-chlorite-rutile-ellenbergerite schists which — upon continued prograde metamorphism — developed first pyrope megacrysts in silica-deficient local environments at the expense of chlorite + talc + kyanite, and subsequently the smaller pyrope crystals with coesite inclusions from reacting talc + kyanite. Based on geobarometrically useful mineral inclusions as well as on experimentally determined phase relations, a prograde PT-path — simplified for water activity = 1 — is constructed which passes through the approximate PT-conditions 16 kbar and 560° C, 29 kbar and 720° C, and finally up to 37 kbar at about 800° C, where the Mg-rich metapelite was a pyrope-coesite rock with phengite, kyanite, and talc still present. During the retrograde path, pyrope was altered metasomatically either into phlogopite + kyanite + quartz or, at a later stage, to chlorite + muscovite + quartz. Both assemblages yield PT-constraints, the latter about 7–9 kbar, 500–600° C. The country rock gneisses have also endured high-pressures of at least 15 kbar, but they provide mostly constraints on the lowest portion of the uplift conditions within the greenschist facies (about 5 kbar, 450° C). Microprobe data are presented for the following minerals: pyrope, ellenbergerite, dumortierite (unusually MgTi-rich), jadeite, vermiculite (formed after Na-phlogopite?), paragonite, and for several generations of phengite, chlorite, talc, phlogopite, dravite, and glaucophane in the high-pressure rocks, as well as for biotite, chlorite, phengites, epidote, garnet, albite, and K-feldspar in the country rock gneisses. An outstanding open problem identified in this study is the preservation of minerals as inclusions within kyanite and pyrope beyond their PT-stability limits.

    Notes: Summary We describe a new technique specially designed for weaning from mechanical ventilation: carbon dioxide mandatory ventilation (CO2MV). CO2MV is based on feedback between end tidal expired partial pressure of carbon dioxide and ventilatory mode, controlled or spontaneous. In order to evaluate its real interest we performed a randomized prospective study, CO2MV vs Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation (IMV) and T. Tube Method (TTM). Fourty-two adult patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease entered this study at the end of acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilatory support. We observed a better stability of arterial blood gas during weaning with CO2MV and an increase in success rate (CO2MV 13/14 -IMV 5/14 - TTM 10/14). From this study CO2MV seems available for weaning of COPD patients. Nevertheless, further studies are required to appreciate its real clinical interest.

    Notes: Abstract As the number of signals and data to be handled grows in intensive care unit, it is necessary to design more powerful computing systems that integrate and summarize all this information. The manual input of data as e.g. clinical signs and drug prescription and the synthetic representation of these data requires an ever more sophisticated user interface. The introduction of knowledge bases in the data management allows to conceive contextual interfaces. The objective of this paper is to show the importance of the design of the user interface, in the daily use of clinical information system. Then we describe a methodology that uses the man-machine interaction to capture the clinician knowledge during the clinical practice. The different steps are the audit of the user's actions, the elaboration of statistic models allowing the definition of new knowledge, and the validation that is performed before complete integration. A part of this knowledge can be used to improve the user interface. Finally, we describe the implementation of these concepts on a UNIX platform using OSF/MOTIF graphical interface.

    Notes: Abstract In intensive care unit, a lot of data are currently available but remain unused by nurses and residents because of complexity of analysis. We have developed a system for interpretation of respiratory data (RESPAID) in order to improve monitoring of patients under respiratory support and also to provide a high level of information. RESPAID is a real-time system which interprets quantitative and qualitative aspects of the usual respiratory data at different levels of information. Initial knowledge base was built from data given by four specialists in intensive care. Major attention was paid to different aspects of the system: monitor interface, user interface and time representation. Data are issued from standard respirators and/or monitors used in the intensive care unit. Informations provided by RESPAID are alarm identification, ventilator settings modification and proposal for physiological evolution of the patient or suspected complication. RESPAID runs on IBM PCAT3 with 1st class shell. It is currently in clinical validation procedure.
