    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurde das Wärmeübergangsproblem beim modifizierten chemischen Aufdampfprozeß untersucht, und zwar im Hinblick auf die Einflüsse bezüglich Feststoffdichtdicke, Brennergeschwindigkeit und Rohrrotation. Die Lösung der quasistationären dreidimensionalen Energiegleichungen für die Temperaturfelder im Gas und in der Feststoffschicht erfolgte unter Ausprägung einer Gaußschen Wärmefluß-Randbedingung am Außenumfang. Von besonderem Interesse ist der Einfluß der Feststoffschichtdicke und der Brennergeschwindigkeit auf die Temperaturverteilung am Innenumfang, die Gastemperatur und die Thermophoresegeschwindigkeit. Starke Änderungen der achsialen Temperaturverteilung am Innenumfang resultieren sowohl aus verschiedenen Feststoffschichtdicken wie Brennergeschwindigkeiten. Zunehmende Schichtdicke und Rohrrotation reduzieren den Einfluß ungleichförmiger Aufheizung durch den Brenner in Umfangrichtung und bewirken dort eine sehr gleichförmige Oberflächentemperatur.
    Notes: Abstract The heat transfer problem relative to the modified chemical vapor deposition process has been analyzed and the effects of solid layer thickness, torch speed and tube rotation are studied. The quasi-steady three-dimensional energy equations have been solved for the temperature fields in the gas and the solid layer with a Gaussian heat flux boundary condition on the outer surface. Of particular interest is the effect of the solid layer thickness and the torch speed on inner surface temperature, gas temperature and thermophoretic velocity. The large change of the axial temperature distribution of the surface occurs for different solid layer thicknesses or torch speeds. The presence of the solid layer and tube rotation reduce the effects of nonuniform torch heating in the circumferential direction and the resulting surface temperatures are very uniform in this direction.

    Notes: 1 This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of rutin and harmaline (1-methyl-7-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-β-carboline) on the development of the surgically induced reflux oesophagitis, on gastric secretion, lipid peroxidation, polymorphonucleocytes (PMNs) accumulation, superoxide and hydroxyl radical production in PMNs, cytokine [interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)] production in blood and [Ca2+]i mobilization in PMNs. 2 Rutin and harmaline significantly prevented the development of reflux oesophagitis and gastric secretion. Treatments of oesophagitis rats with rutin and harmaline inhibited lipid peroxidation, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in the oesophagus in comparison with untreated rats. 3 Superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide production in 1 μm formylmethionylleucylphenylalanine (fMLP)- or 0.1 μg ml−1N-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-activated PMNs was inhibited by rutin and harmaline in a dose-dependent fashion. Rutin and harmaline effectively scavenged the hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide. Treatments of oesophagitis rats with rutin and harmaline inhibited IL-1β production in the oesophagus in comparison with untreated rats, but TNF-α production was not affected by rutin and harmaline. The fMLP-induced elevation of [Ca2+]i was inhibited by rutin. 4 The results of this study suggest that rutin and harmaline may have beneficial protective effects against reflux oesophagitis by the inhibition of gastric acid secretion, oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokine production (i.e. IL-1β), and intracellular calcium mobilization in PMNs in rats.

    Notes: Abstract. Treatment of rainbow trout macrophages with glycyrrhizin (GL), an aqueous extract of licorice, Glycyrrhiza glabra, enhanced their respiratory burst activity. Maximal effects were seen using concentrations of 10–100 μml−1. GL also modulated trout lymphocytes, increasing proliferation responses to the mitogen phytohaemagglutinin some two-fold over a range of GL concentrations. In addition, GL elicited the release of a macrophage activating factor (MAF) from head kidney leucocytes, as assessed by the ability of generated supernatants to increase respiratory burst activity of target macrophages. MAF activity was most apparent using 100 μg ml−1 GL to induce MAF release and a 48-h incubation period with the target macrophages. Finally, GL was shown to enhance the release of MAF in response to the mitogen concanavalin A. The possible use of GL as a stimulant of fish innate defences is discussed.

    Notes: The origin of the 1.356 eV emission band measured by photoluminescence (PL) is investigated by correlating the Hall measurement data for the same materials. The crystals grown by the horizontal-Bridgman technique were As or Ga rich by controlling As-zone temperatures. Type conversion from n to p type with the thermal activation energy ΔE=0.133 eV and ΔE=0.05 eV were achieved by heat treatment of the As-rich crystals. The Ev +0.133 eV level and the 1.356 eV band may not be attributed to the same defect because the Ev +0.133 eV level is electrically active with a nonradiative center and the 1.356 eV band is radiative with an electrically inactive (neutral) center. Therefore, both Ev +0.133 eV level and the 1.356 eV band were not attributed to copper impurity because copper is electrically and optically an active center in GaAs. The 1.356 eV band measured by PL may be due to a gallium-vacancy related complex, but differs from VGa -donor complex.

    Notes: Conductivity and ion density of a plasma channel induced by a mildly relativistic electron beam (300 kV, ∼2 kA, 10–50 ns) have been experimentally investigated under various gas pressures. Pressures of filling gas (air) in this experiment ranged from 10 mTorr to 100 mTorr. The net currents of the beam-induced plasma channel were measured by four Rogowski coils located along the propagating region, while the electron beam currents were measured by a Faraday cup. The inductive plasma currents observed at the above pressure regimes have been characterized by magnetic decay time. Plasma-channel conductivity and ion density induced by the beam are measured along the propagating axial positions under various gas pressures. The numerical result of the ion density is also obtained at the charge neutralization time when the ion density is just the same as the electron beam density, and the digitizing experimental data of the beam current Ib(t) and voltage Vd(t) have been used. As expected, in both numerical and experimental results the ion density increases to a peak value of about 3.0×1011 cm−3 and 3.3×1011 cm−3, respectively, at 50 mTorr and slowly decreases for both cases as the gas pressure increases from 50 mTorr to 100 mTorr. Moreover, the results of ion density predicted by the theoretical model developed here are also found to be in remarkably good agreement with experimental and numerical results at pressure regimes from 10 mTorr to 100 mTorr. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The photoluminescence spectra of GaAs/AlGaAs multiple-quantum-well structures with varying thicknesses have been studied as a function of excitation intensity and polarization. An intense sideband luminescence with a narrow linewidth is observed at 36 meV below the band-to-band transition in all samples. These results, along with additional investigations detailed in this paper, support the conclusion that for the samples studied in these experiments this emission is a stimulated phonon-assisted recombination.
