Notes: The charge sensitivity of a capacitive-coupled single electron transistor (SET) has been investigated with analytical and numerical calculations. We found that by tuning the gate charge and the asymmetry of the conductances, the transconductance-to-noise ratio can be largely increased. With the present available fabrication technology, our theoretical analysis can serve as a guidance for optimizing the charge sensitivity of a SET. © 1994 American Institue of Physics.

Notes: We have programmed a self-consistent calculation to theoretically model a resonant tunneling light emitting diode of optimized performance, using a bipolar AlGaAs double barrier resonant tunneling structure as an illustrating example. The principle of optimization is under a nearly zero-field bias, electrons and holes resonantly tunnel into the well simultaneously, and are trapped completely in the well to recombine to emit light with maximum intensity. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The performance of electron refrigeration by means of tunnel junctions between superconducting and normal-metal electrodes is studied theoretically. A suitable approximation of the basic expression for the heat current across the tunnel junctions allows the investigation of the main features of the device such as its optimal bias voltage, its maximal heat current, its optimal working point, and the maximal temperature reduction. The theoretical results are compared with those of a recent experiment. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Assuming the absence of 1/f noise, we have calculated the charge sensitivity (CS) of a capacitive-coupled double-junction single electron tunneling transistor (SETT) with a superconducting grain, operating at low temperature and low bias voltage such that the tunneling current is dominated by the Andreev process. In this case the effect of co-tunneling is suppressed without using the complicated fabrication method. We have used a realistic sample to demonstrate the procedure of optimizing the CS of a SETT with respect to relevant physical parameters and structure parameters. With the presently available fabrication technology, our theoretical analysis can serve as a guide for increasing the CS of a SETT beyond 10−6 e/(square root of)Hz. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A model Hamiltonian which includes one localized-type and one extended-type orbitals has been constructed for a more realistic description of magnetic impurities in nonmagnetic metals. We have used a variational method to study the ground state of this Hamiltonian. Due to the Hund's rule type coupling, under favorable condition the extended-and the localized-type orbitals can be both singly occupied to form a triplet state which contributes significantly to the local moment. We found a continuous change of local moments between the exact solutions at both the atomic and the band limits. A new mechanism has been discovered which may produce a ferromagnetic polarization cloud around the local moment. If so, this may provide an answer for the giant-moments formation.

Notes: Abstract Applying a variational method to the generalized Wolff model, we have investigated the effect of impurity-impurity interaction on the formation of local moments in the ground state. The direct coupling between the impurities is found to be more important than the interaction between the impurities and the host conduction electrons, as far as the formation of local moments is concerned. Under certain conditions we also observe different valences on different impurities.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the nonlinear low-frequency microwave absorption of an ensemble of small metallic grains. Earlier Zhou et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 1958 (1996)] have proved that linear absorption by such a system is due to a mesoscopic relaxation mechanism for which important contribution is from the grains with small level spacings between the ground state and the first excited state. Here we have shown further that such grains are anomalously sensitive to the field amplitude and the distribution of level spacings. Since such a behavior depends on external magnetic field, we expect the appearance of a giant nonlinear magnetoresistance, as well as a very strong temperature dependence of the nonlinear microwave conductivity.

Notes: The AMO function of the hydrogen molecule ψ = ψc + η ψi, where ψc is the covalent part and ψi the ionic part, is investigated for small internuclear distances R. We found η → -1 as R →,-1 as R → 0, contrary to the intuitively expected limit η → 1. However, near R = 0 an analytical expression of ψ is derived, showing that ψ reduces to the helium ground state as R → 0. We have proved that the empirical concept „covalent and ionic character“ should be replaced by the symmetry argument in the case of small R.
