Notes: Abstract In a sample of 85 males of the grasshopper Melanoplus femur-rubrum, three different supernumerary chromosomes (B-chromosomes) were observed: a medium-sized metacentric, BM, present in 12.9% of the males and two small telocentrics, BT and Bt, present in 8.2% and 3.5% of the males, respectively. The BM element is mitotically stable, while the BT and Bt elements are mitotically unstable, exhibiting numerical variation among testicular follicles. The mean number of B's per male (testis) is 1.00, 1.62, and 1.38 for the BM, BT, and Bt elements, respectively. A study of chiasma frequency among A-chromosomes revealed that there are no significant differences among the zero B and various B classes either for chiasma frequency or for the variation in chiasma frequency between individuals. There was, however, evidence for a higher within-individual variation in B-containing males when these were pooled. Cells with two Bt-chromosomes were regularly missing the smallest pair of A-chromosomes, suggesting that the Bt element induces non-disjunction of a pair of A-chromosomes and, possibly, that the Bt-chromosome is derived from the missing A-chromosome.

Notes: Abstract In situ aircraft measurements of O3, CO,HNO3, and aerosol particles are presented, performed over the North Sea region in the summerlower stratosphere during the STREAM II campaign(Stratosphere Troposphere Experiments by AircraftMeasurements) in July 1994. Occasionally, high COconcentrations of 200-300 pbbv were measured in thelowermost stratosphere, together with relatively highHNO3 concentrations up to 1.6 ppbv. The particlenumber concentration (at standard pressure andtemperature) between 0.018-1 μm decreased acrossthe tropopause, from 〉1000 cm-3 in the uppertroposphere to 〈500 cm-3 in the lowermoststratosphere. Since the CO sources are found in thetroposphere, the elevated CO mixing ratios areattributed to mixing of polluted tropospheric air intothe lowermost extratropical stratosphere. Further wehave used a chemical model to illustrate that nitrogenoxide reservoir species (mainly HNO3) determinethe availability of NOx (=NO + NO2) andtherefore largely control the total net O3production in the lower kilometers of thestratosphere. Model simulations, applying additionalNOx perturbations from aircraft, show that theO3 production efficiency of NOx is smallerthan previously assumed, under conditions withrelatively high HNO3 mixing ratios, as observedduring STREAM II. The model simulations furthersuggest a relatively high O3 productionefficiency from CO oxidation, as a result of therelatively high ambient HNO3 and NOxconcentrations, implying that upward transport of COrich air enhances O3 production in the lowermoststratosphere. Analysis of the measurements and themodel calculations suggest that the lowermoststratosphere is a transition region in which thechemistry deviates from both the upper troposphere andlower stratosphere.

Notes: Abstract The problem of uniform heat flow disturbed by an insulated penny-shaped crack along the common plane between two semi-infinite elastic media with different thermo-mechanical properties is formulated in terms of two potential functions in a half-space which in turn is reduced to a plane problem solvable by Muskhelishvili's method in complex function theory. Explicit expressions for the stress-intensity factors and the local stress field are derived and used in conjunction with Griffith's energy criterion to obtain the critical temperature gradient which motivates and produces initial crack extension along the bonding surface. The stress analysis involved is also applicable to a penny-shaped crack between two dissimilar solids under shear loadings.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an analysis of the steady-state thermal stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic medium containing two or more parallel coaxial circular cracks. A “perturbation” technique is employed to reduce the problem of finding the temperature and the induced stresses to integral equations of Fredholm type which may be solved by numerical means or iterations. Two types of prescribed thermal conditions are considered. The first is concerned with a uniform flow of heat disturbed by insulated cracks and the second deals with stress-free cracks whose surfaces are exposed to identical amounts of heat. The details of the analysis are illustrated by considering the case of two cracks symmetrically located about the mid plane of the solid. When the cracks are of equal radii, iterative solutions of the governing integral equations are derived and used to determine expressions for the stress-intensity factors (opening and edge-sliding modes), displacements of crack surfaces and other quantities of physical interest which are valid for widely spaced cracks.
